Inserted is a printed card which is signed in ink by Hermann Schardt. The card explains that the book is a gift to celebrate Max Burchartz's 70th birthday. The covers are slightly soiled and darkened in some areas. There is some wear to the head of the spine, and a taped reference number to the tail of the spine. Unpaginated. 295 x 170 mm (11½ x 6¾ inches).
Max Burchartz was a well-known professor of typography at the famous art academy. Burchartz is considered one of the most important designers of the modern age; among other things, he created the design of the modern door handle. With 3 short texts by H. Schard, J. Lampe and J. Gebser.

Antipodes: 1900. - Two albumen prints - mounted on the recto and verso of an oblong of grey card. One side showing The Gap and South Head at Watsons Bay in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia (circa 1903); and on the other side a view of the town of Hobart, Tasmania (from Lansdowne Crescent) taken by John Watt Beattie.
- Two collodion paper prints showing the harbour of Lyttelton, New Zealand by an unknown photographer, and a landscape view across the Bealey near Christchurch, New Zealand taken by E. Wheeler & Son - these also mounted on the recto and verso of an oblong of grey card.
- One unmounted collodion paper print is of the Waimangu Geyser, which is located near Rotorua, New Zealand. This says JM2070 on the front - and possibly refers to the James Ingram McDonald (the painter, photographer, filmmaker, museum director, cultural ambassador, film censor, and promoter of Maori arts and crafts) and may have been taken whilst he was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the early 20th Century. The geyser was known to erupt on a cycle of around 36 hours and would reach heights of up to 450 metres. Written on the verso of the photograph it reads: "The column of steam is about 1200 feet high". This geyser stopped erupting in 1904.

Paris: Jean Paul Caboche, 1991. A lovely black and white photograph of a fashion shoot for Guy Laroche Haute-Couture. Original photograph held under passe partout. Model (anonymous) in a gabardine jacket and felt hat. To the verso, the credits show that this is from the Guy Laroche Autumn / Winter collection. Photograph in as new condition, held under stiff passe partout with thin card backing board. Photograph is in practically as new condition. Passe partout is clean and neat, with a touch of edge tape only. Photograph dimensions 29.5cm x 21cm. Passe partout is 45cm x 36cm. It is perhaps symptomatic of the fashion industry that although the hair stylist and make up artist are both credited, the model herself is not names. Laroche (1921-1989) was one of the first designers to introduce separates (ie. jacket and trousers). His company continues today.

Le passe-partout est propre et net, avec seulement un peu de ruban adhésif sur les bords. Les dimensions de la photographie sont de 29,5 cm x 21 cm. Le passe-partout mesure 45 cm x 36 cm. Il est peut-être symptomatique de l'industrie de la mode que, bien que le coiffeur et le maquilleur soient tous deux mentionnés, le mannequin lui-même n'est pas nommé. Laroche (1921-1989) a été l'un des premiers créateurs à introduire des vêtements séparés (c'est-à-dire une veste et un pantalon). Sa société existe encore aujourd'hui.

Paris: Bloch-Laine, 1992. First edition. A large black and white photograph by the celebrated photographer Jean-Louis Bloch-Lainé. This may be one of his original proofs for one of his culinary books, but we haven't been able to locate it if so. It is signed to the rear, with the note "Chez Mario" which may be a restaurant ? The image itself is clean and neat, but the white surround has some staining to it. This could be hidden with mounting. Now presented under a temporary passe partout. Image is 20cm x 30cm. Sheet is 30cm x 41cm. Jean-Louis Bloch-Lainé is a distinguished French photographer celebrated for his editorial, artistic, and documentary photography. His extensive career, spanning from the early 1960s onward, has influenced French visual culture in both fashion and fine art contexts. He began his work with Elle magazine in 1963. He is particularly known for his culinary photographs.

The artist placed artworks in different cities. He tried to focus on areas which were already covered in posters and signs, to add art to the ensemble. Inscription by Briggs to the half title page. 96 pages, full of colour and black and white photographs of the pieces in situ, and in galleries. Both dustwrapper and book are in excellent, clean condition. 27cm x 23cm.

Circa 1875. A double sheet photograph, that has a crease to the centre where folded. A little darkening and creasing to the edges and slight fading to the left side. Studio stamp of emanuele Lupi to the verso. 21.5cm x 49cm.

Paris: RVB Books, 2017. First Edition. Soft cover, in silver photographic paper jacket. Features newspaper archive of 106 b/w photographs, and text in English, both by Timothy Prus. There is a loosely inserted French translation for each photo caption. This book was the result of the purchase of the newspaper archives of the city of Luton, England. A vast source of material, from which Timothy Prus selected a series of images to create a surrealist story line. Prus had been interested in amateur photography / found images long before this became accepted in most of contemporary art. The book is in a near fine condition, and appears almost unread. 112 pages. 185 x 130 mm (7¼ x 5 inches).

Paris: Peeters Portraits, 1955. Three large silver gelatin photographs (23.5cm x 17.5cm) each signed in white ink by the photographer Harcourt. These are mounted under passe partout and tipped onto the front of folding card. The three images are of a young girl's First Holy Communion, and she is pictured in suitably angelic poses! The three are held in a photography company's cream card folder embossed with "Peeters Portraits Paris" to the front cover. These are possibly produced with a "professional" model as samples of the work that Peeters portraits can produce for customers. Photographs in as new condition. The cream fold has a touch of darkening and a tiny amount of splitting to the bottom edge of the spine. Folder size 38.5cm x 28.5cm

Elles sont montées sous passe partout et collées au recto d'une carte dépliante. Les trois images représentent la première communion d'une jeune fille, et elle est représentée dans des poses angéliques appropriées ! Les trois images sont placées dans une pochette en carton crème d'une société de photographie, portant l'inscription "Peeters Portraits Paris" sur la page de garde. Il est possible que ces photos aient été produites avec un modèle "professionnel" comme échantillons du travail que Peeters Portraits peut produire pour ses clients. Les photographies sont en parfait état. Le pli crème présente un léger assombrissement et une toute petite fente sur le bord inférieur du dos. Taille du dossier : 38,5 cm x 28,5 cm.

Cairo: Émile Béchard, 1875. First edition. Entitled No. 58 dervish faintly to the bottom left of the photograph, and clearer, Béchard to the bottom right. Undated but Circa 1875. A lovely image, showing three Dervishes, on the steps of the Damascus mosque. With their distinctive sikke headgear (tall cylindrical hats) and slippers. One is either smoking a pipe or playing a very long whistle! The image is clearly posed, but still gives an authentic impression of Damascus circa 1875. Photograph is 25.5cm x 22cm under a cream bevelled passe partout of 35.5cm x 32cm. Both are very clean and tidy. Passe partout has a slight bump in the top right cover. A rare piece of photography. This item is catalogued in the Philip Maritz Collection of Émile Béchard's Photographs of Egypt, which forms part of the American University in Cairo. Catalogue Ref. SC-2016-09.
Émile Béchard was a notable French photographer born in 1844, recognized for his work in Egypt from around 1869 to 1880, especially in Cairo. He is best known for his evocative portraits and meticulously composed scenes depicting Egyptian daily life, including images of shopkeepers, merchants, workers, and dancers, framed through an orientalist perspective.

Une belle image montrant trois derviches sur les marches de la mosquée de Damas. Avec leurs coiffes sikke caractéristiques (hauts chapeaux cylindriques) et leurs pantoufles. L'un d'eux fume une pipe ou joue d'un très long sifflet ! L'image est clairement mise en scène, mais donne néanmoins une impression authentique de Damas vers 1875. La photographie mesure 25,5 cm x 22 cm sous un passe-partout biseauté crème de 35,5 cm x 32 cm. Les deux sont très propres et bien entretenus. Le passe-partout présente une légère bosse dans le coin supérieur droit. Une photographie rare. Cet article est répertorié dans la collection Philip Maritz des photographies d'Émile Béchard sur l'Égypte, qui fait partie de l'Université américaine du Caire. Référence du catalogue : SC-2016-09. Émile Béchard était un photographe français de renom né en 1844, reconnu pour son travail en Égypte entre 1869 et 1880, en particulier au Caire. Il est surtout connu pour ses portraits évocateurs et ses scènes méticuleusement composées illustrant la vie quotidienne égyptienne, notamment des images de commerçants, de marchands, d'ouvriers et de danseurs, cadrées dans une perspective orientaliste.

N.D. Photo / X. Photo, C1875. Two attractive albumen photographs of Paris, pasted onto two sides of the same piece of stiff card. Both are 21cm x 28cm. One is a view of the Champ Elysées taken from on top of the Arc de Triomphe. A good, clean and bright image, showing quite a crowd of carriages on the road, with pedestrians on the wide pavements to the side. The view fades into the distance. Clean and good photograph. The second side shows the front of the National Opera with carriages, omnibuses and pedestrians milling around. What is particularly interesting in this shot, is that the lamp posts are being installed in Front of the Opera. These enable us to date the photograph as they were originally installed in 1875. These form part of the "Ring of Light" (Ceinture de Lumière), a set of 60 lighting fixtures designed by architect Charles Garnier as integral to the opera house's exterior when it opened on January 5, 1875. A nice photograph, if slightly faded. The backing card is 25.5cm x 30.5cm and has a couple of closed tears to the edges. (not affecting the prints). The sheet has obviously been removed from an album at some point.

L'une représente une vue des Champs-Élysées prise depuis le sommet de l'Arc de Triomphe. Une image nette et lumineuse, montrant une foule de voitures sur la route, avec des piétons sur les larges trottoirs latéraux. La vue s'estompe au loin. Une photographie nette et de bonne qualité. Le deuxième côté montre la façade de l'Opéra national avec des voitures, des omnibus et des piétons qui s'affairent. Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant dans cette photo, c'est que des lampadaires sont en cours d'installation devant l'Opéra. Cela nous permet de dater la photographie, car ils ont été installés à l'origine en 1875. Ils font partie de la « Ceinture de Lumière », un ensemble de 60 luminaires conçus par l'architecte Charles Garnier comme partie intégrante de l'extérieur de l'opéra lors de son ouverture le 5 janvier 1875. Une belle photographie, bien qu'un peu décolorée. La carte de support mesure 25,5 cm x 30,5 cm et présente quelques déchirures fermées sur les bords (qui n'affectent pas les tirages). La feuille a manifestement été retirée d'un album à un moment donné.

A large original albumen photograph, showing the World's fair exhibition of 1889, which was held inside the base of the newly constructed Palace of the Liberal Arts. In beautiful sepia tones, the photograph is 400 by 285mm (15¾ by 11¼ inches). The photograph is mounted on a stiff cream card backing, which is 53,5cm x 42.5cm. To the base of the photograph is the title and publisher printed in white. The name of the photographer is embossed to the bottom right of the photograph. Overall, the picture is in excellent, clean condition, bar a small area of loss to the bottom left of the shot (not really affecting the image). The backing card is slightly darkened, but in sound condition. There is a pencilled initial to the bottom right of the backing card. This is possibly a monogram of the photographers initials? A beautifully composed photograph showing advertising and architectural details of the period. We have been unable to find another copy of this photograph, although it was clearly used for engravings and postcards (without credit) at the time. The Palace of Fine Arts and the Palace of Liberal Arts were twin buildings constructed for the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. They were the work of the architect Jean-Camille Formigé. Located on the Champ de Mars, they stood on either side of the Eiffel Tower. They were demolished starting in September 1897 to make way for new buildings for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. Séraphin Médéric Mieusement (1840-1905) was from Gonneville-la-Mallet (Seine-Maritime), and based himself in Blois in the Loire. Initially a portrait photographer, he became a renowned photographer of historical monuments. He was one of the most important French architectural and documentary photographers of the 19th century. He was the official photographer for the Commission des Monuments Historiques: essentially the French state's chief photographer for heritage documentation

Réalisée dans de magnifiques tons sépia, cette photographie mesure 400 × 285 mm (15¾ × 11¼ pouces). La photographie est montée sur un carton rigide de couleur crème, mesurant 53,5 cm x 42,5 cm. Au bas de la photographie, le titre et le nom de l'éditeur sont imprimés en blanc. Le nom du photographe est estampé en bas à droite de la photographie. Dans l'ensemble, la photographie est en excellent état, sans taches, à l'exception d'une petite zone manquante en bas à gauche de la prise de vue (qui n'affecte pas vraiment l'image). Le carton de support est légèrement foncé, mais en bon état. Une initiale écrite au crayon figure en bas à droite du carton de support. S'agit-il peut-être d'un monogramme formé des initiales du photographe ? Une photographie magnifiquement composée, mettant en valeur des détails publicitaires et architecturaux de l'époque. Nous n'avons pas réussi à trouver d'autre exemplaire de cette photographie, bien qu'elle ait manifestement servi à des gravures et des cartes postales (sans mention de l'auteur) à l'époque. Le Palais des Beaux-Arts et le Palais des Arts Libéraux étaient deux bâtiments jumeaux construits pour l'Exposition universelle de Paris de 1889. Ils étaient l'œuvre de l'architecte Jean-Camille Formigé. Situés sur le Champ de Mars, ils se dressaient de part et d'autre de la tour Eiffel. Leur démolition a commencé en septembre 1897 afin de laisser place à de nouveaux bâtiments pour l'Exposition universelle de 1900. Séraphin Médéric Mieusement (1840-1905) était originaire de Gonneville-la-Mallet (Seine-Maritime) et s'était installé à Blois, dans la Loire. D'abord photographe portraitiste, il devint un photographe de monuments historiques de renom.

London Stereoscope and Photographic Company Ltd, 1889. An attractive collection of 25 published albumen photographs of London, photographed and published by the London Stereoscope company. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the front board. There is some bumping and water staining to the front board particularly. The title page and some page edges are a little foxed, but the images themselves are in very good condition. The pages are each bound in, album style. This is weak in parts, and has been reinforced, but overall is sound. images are 13.5 x 21 cm each. The usual London landmarks are all represented, on streets which seem very empty to the modern eye, and populated by pedestrians, horses and carriages. Album is 300 by 220mm (11¾ by 8¾ inches).
