The title is uncoloured in this edition, but the 17 "Actualités"all have bright and attractive hand colouring. Hardback volume with the title repeated to the front board. This is quite darkened and rubbed, and about 1/3rd of the spine is lacking. Binding is weak to the front hinge and has been reinforced with archival tape. The end papers are significantly darkened, but the plates less so. They all have the running title "Actualités" to the top. Each has a number to the top right - although there are fairly erratic, ranging from number 1 to 285! All deal with the politics of the day, including the famine in Ireland, Italian Unification (just coming to its conclusion) and the increased tensions with the Prussians which would soon lead to the Franco-Prussian war. Each plate has the imprint: "Lith. Destouches, r. Paradis p.re 28." We have seen other copies which do not all bear this imprint, and which do not have numbers to the top edge, or which are uncoloured. Overall a decent copy of a scarce item. 35cm x 26cm.

35cm x 26cm.

(The Free French forces in world war 2, under de Gaulle, had used this symbol). This is pinned over a background which states "CRS SS" multiple times. The CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) was the National Reserve Force to deal with strikes and demonstrations. In fact this slogan dates back to 1948 when the CRS was first formed. The wall also shows a hand written sign for a manifestation in the evening of the 19th at St Lazare. Public demonstrations were often (and are still often) held in the space in front of the St Lazare station. This is almost certainly a large print of a reportage / press photograph of the time. In red ink to the reverse is written "68." The central poster was used in the 1968 student riots, and although we have been unable to trace this photograph, there is an "internet ghost" of it, which states it was taken in May 1968. Condition is excellent, with no significant marks or dirt to it.

A little edge wear to the folder. The cartoons are mainly attacking the west, and the introduction acknowledges that they follow a "Common advancing front with Soviet Caricature." where the enemy is "The enemy of Peace" mainly identified with the USA. 21, [3] pp., [1], [71] pp. 295 x 210 mm (11½ x 8¼ inches).

21, [3] pp, [1], [71] pp. 295 x 210 mm

" An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P160. This quotes Earl Grey as saying "Hitherto society, in this happy island, has been constructed upon the model of a cone; the common people forming the base, the monarch the apex, and the various other classes ranging in order in the intermediate space. For my own aggrandizement I have reversed the figure. I well know that, if left to itself, this state of society could not endure, any more than a cone could stand unsupported upon its apex. But here is my master-stroke of policy. The broad base of the populace makes a firm footing for me; and my opponents are as much interested as I am in supporting me; because, if they desert me, the cone will fall, and anarchy, as fatal to them as to myself, will ensue."

John Doyle (1797–1868), known by the pen name H.B., was an influential Irish caricaturist, political cartoonist, painter, and lithographer. He is considered a pioneer of "polite caricature," a style that avoided grotesque exaggerations and instead relied on wit and subtle humor to critique political figures and events. His work marked a departure from the harsh satire of earlier artists like James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.
