London: N/A, 1940. A lovely original pencil / coloured sketch of Winston Churchill. This is similar, but not identical to a lithograph of a sketch that he used in his work "Celebrities in Caricature." in 1940. Signed in crayon / coloured pencil to the lower right corner. An excellent quality caricature with his distinctive cigar and bow tie. There is light foxing to the sheet, and a little creasing to one edge (not affecting illustration). Image size is 18.5cm x 16cm. Sheet size is 27cm x 23.5cm. Mark Wayner (originally Weiner - 1889-1980) was a Russian born artist, whose family emigrated to the United Kingdom. He published two books of celebrity caricatures, as well as being a portraitist.

The Front and rear boards are detached, and there is no spine. A little rubbing to the edges, and staining to the rear board. Inside are the title plus 31 plates. (Complete) Plate 12 shows a balloonist attempting to relieve the siege. Some darkening to the illustration. Inside, the 32 hand coloured sheets are in very good condition. There is a little darkening to the title sheet, and slight handling to the edges of the sheets, but overall in very nice shape. Il y a un peu de noircissement sur la feuille de titre, et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles, mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Le titre présente une déchirure et quelques petites entailles réparées avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. Pondichery: Sri Soudjanarandjani, 1920. A collection of four issues of this monthly magazine, edited by Mariadassou. It was influential in advocating for the health of the Indian population, and in arguing for secession from France to the English (seen as a step towards independence). Prior to 1935, the main press criticism of the French colonial system in Pondicherry flowed from the pages of the satirical monthly Sri Soudjanarandjani that published in French and Tamil. In 1920 the paper vociferously denounced conditions in textile production after an illegal strike failed. Workers were doing a 12 hour day – although workers in Madras did no more than 10 hours and were paid more. Although the newspaper also regularly published Tamil language nationalist poetry by Subramanya Bharati, whose writings became a symbol of cultural identity, it was not consistently anti- French. Scarce journal, each issue is four pages. Adverts to the rear page. The editor, Dr Mariadassou was an author, journalist and the first Indian medical doctor in French India. Darkened pages, with some nicks and a few tears. The paper is becoming brittle. Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, gained its significance as "the French Riviera of the East" after the advent of French colonialisation in India. After changing hands several times, it was returned to the French in 1815. It merged with India in 1962 following a resolution of 1954. 44.5cm x 29cm.

The outside pages (title and rear page - there is no cover) are a little darkened and have some markings to them. A little edgewear to the pages, with slight creasing to the corners. Internally clean and tidy with intermittent foxing only. This copy bears the ownership signature of Captain La Roche. Probably Henry La Roche, of Halberton, Devon. Captain of the Royal Navy and J.P. He had served in various vessels during the wars with France from 1792, obtaining the rank of Commander in 1804 and Post Captain in 1806. He died in Devon in 1832. See Gentleman's Magazine. The binding is mainly clean and tidy but there has been rubbing and chipping to the spine. (This is obviously a common problem as we see several copies with a replaced spine strip). 50 pages, with an illustration to each page. Generally a framed full page illustration to the recto and a smaller, unframed illustration or vignette to the verso. Internally a nice clean copy. Vi, 50 pages. 28.5cm x 25cm.

Berlin: Carl Rentsch, 1934. First edition. The second of Hanfstaengl's collections of caricatures of Hitler from the world's press. He writes in the introduction that this shows the caricatures from his entry into political history until the present day (1934). He states that this is to "prove his importance and to refute his opponents" The work was written with the permission and approval of the Fuhrer. Original hardback cloth. This is a little foxed, but still very presentable. The text block is clean and tidy throughout, with a slight darkening to the page edges. Of interest in this copy, is that it is covered in the Classified Adverts section of a 1945 German newspaper. The owner was clearly wanting to disguise this pre Nazi book after the war. Adverts include an American oil company seeking bomb disposal experts to work in Tripoli. A nice piece of ephemeral history. 176 pages. 255 by 190mm (10 by 7½ inches).

L'intérêt de cet exemplaire est qu'il est couvert par la section des petites annonces d'un journal allemand de 1945. Le propriétaire souhaitait manifestement dissimuler ce livre pré-nazi après la guerre. Les annonces concernent notamment une compagnie pétrolière américaine à la recherche d'experts en déminage pour travailler à Tripoli. Un beau morceau d'histoire éphémère. 176 pages. 255 x 190 mm

Cologne: Chez le Politique, 1695. Nice copy of this first edition forgery. Almost everything on the title page is false. The real author is the soldier turned author Coutilz de Sandras (1644-1712). The publication date of 1695 is accurate. The work is essentially fiction, written in a stately language and woven into a historical background. Full leather binding with small leather label and gilt title. A little rubbing and marking, but overall in very good condition. marking to the end papers from old tape. Frontis showing the grovelling marquis presenting his memoirs to the king. The rear Louvois died before this work was written. [x], 576. pages. Final blank end paper has been removed. Usually ascribed to Gatien de Courtilz. cf. B.M. Contemporary signature to blank end paper. title, contents and essays. This large paper edition, with wide margins, and 400 pages, is much scarcer than the contemporaneous ordinary edition, with [12], 312 pages. The boards are in very good, clean condition. A touch of bumping. Inside, the book is in good, clean, if slightly darkened condition. 400 pp.

Addison published the 'Freeholder' in fifty five papers, from 23 December 1715, to 9 June 1716 - a political 'Spectator,' in defense of orthodox Whig principles imperiled by the rebellion in Scotland. (DNB) Two essays are devoted to the Tory Fox Hunter (22 & 47) and one "On the late Act of Parliament for suspending the Habeus Corpus Act." (essay 16).
