Paris: Philippe Renouard, 1903. An anonymous essay on the charitable and good works of Mademoiselle E. Lozuet, followed by the eulogy spoken at her grave-side by M.J.C. Lozuet was clearly a compassionate woman, who anonymously gave away all of the income she inherited in good works. Half black leather binding, with black marbled boards. Gilt title to spine. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. Sepia photograph of Mademoiselle Lozuet and tissue guard, followed by the two essays. Good clean copy, with just a few light foxing spots. There is a slight bowing to the boards, but not major. 12 pages. 260 by 165mm (10¼ by 6½ inches).

Londini [London]: Guil [William] Downing: 1673. First Edition. Fairly recent (1970's ?) half leather binding with gilt titles to spine and marbled boards. The recent binding is in good condition. The text block is in good condition, with a little darkening / toning to the pages. Thomas Tully (1620–1676) was an Anglican clergyman. He held a preferment at Ripon. He was a conforming Calvinist voice in the post-Restoration Church of England. [viii], 1-153, [vii]. pp Wing T3248 Première édition. Reliure demi-cuir assez récente (années 1970 ?) avec titres dorés au dos et plats marbrés. La reliure récente est en bon état. Le bloc de texte est en bon état, avec un peu d'assombrissement / virage aux pages. Thomas Tully (1620-1676) était un ecclésiastique anglican. Il avait une promotion à Ripon. London: Bickers & Son, 1879. First edition. In original hardback binding, red half leather and green buckram binding with gilt stamped coat of arms decorating the front board. Leather on spine is worn, with some scrapes. Boards themselves are a lightened in places / watermarked. There is a small watermark to the top right corner of the first two pages in the contents. All page edges gilt. Marbles end papers. xcviii, 105 pp. 250 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches). Signed by the author to the top of the title page. This is a message to what appears to say 'Philip Grove of Leeds', and references two pages within the book, that subsequently have the name Grove underlined. Other paragraphs the author wishes to draw Grove's attention to are marked in the margin in a couple of places.

Paris: Peeters Portraits, 1955. Three large silver gelatin photographs (23.5cm x 17.5cm) each signed in white ink by the photographer Harcourt. These are mounted under passe partout and tipped onto the front of folding card. The three images are of a young girl's First Holy Communion, and she is pictured in suitably angelic poses! The three are held in a photography company's cream card folder embossed with "Peeters Portraits Paris" to the front cover. These are possibly produced with a "professional" model as samples of the work that Peeters portraits can produce for customers. Photographs in as new condition. The cream fold has a touch of darkening and a tiny amount of splitting to the bottom edge of the spine. Folder size 38.5cm x 28.5cm

Original pale green paper wrappers with titles and illustration to the front, and adverts for other works to the rear. Wrappers are mainly clean but with a little darkening and slight nicking to the edges. Partially uncut (final page and catalogues of the Anti-Clerical library). Pages are clean but slightly darkened. Red Boards with black and silver gilt title to spine. 215 x 150 mm (8½ x 6 inches). Very slight bumping to spine and corners. Cover has some small closed tears, rubbing, and edge wear. Overall very good copy that author gave as a gift to friends in March 1969.
Chadwick Hansen made an astonishing claim in this book. He asserted that a few of those accused in Salem were actually guilty, and that witches did practice in Salem, some causing real harm to others.
"There was witchcraft in Salem, and it worked," writes Hansen, who was a former English professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "There was every reason to regard it as a criminal offense."
Belief in witchcraft was far from unique to Salem, Hansen argued; it was endemic to Europe at the time and a constant in the English culture that 17th century New England reflected.
