First edition. An attractive report written for the Prefect, on the marine trade in Orléans. Cream soft covers, sewn to the spine with an attractive vignette of a steam boat to the front cover. The covers are a little darkened, but mainly sound. Small shelf label to the top edge.* Orléans was a major inland port in 1839, handling large amounts of cargo including wine, salt, timber, and goods from Nantes/Marseille. Steam "inexplosible" boats (such as that in the vignette) competed fiercely, with quays overloaded. For example, 197 boats arrived in one week of 1844, valued at 12–13 million francs. This report captures the climax of the of the trade on the Loire, just before the arrival of the railway in 1843 caused rapid decline (traffic fell from 381,000 tonnes in 1843 to 21,000 by 1866). Internally in good, clean condition, with almost no marking. Attractive folding map of the Loire at Orléan to the rear. Of particular interest is a several page list of names of the master mariners of the city. 28 pages. 30cm x 22.5cm. Not found in WorldCat. None for sale at the time of cataloguing. * label for the bibliothèque du fonds Bergevin to the top of the front cover. Taking its name from the two leading figures of the Bergevin family, Louis-Athanase Bergevin (1753-1832) and his son Louis-Catherine (1798-1876), were magistrates from Blois and major landowners in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt. The collection was dispersed at auction in Véndome in 2022.

A treatise on the history and nature of hospitals / hospitality in ancient times. The binding is an attractive half leather with marbled boards. gilt decoration to the spine with a burgundy label. Six panels to the spine. There is a loss of half a panel of the spine leather. Slight bumping and rubbing to the binding otherwise. Slight weakening to the front hinge. Marbled end papers. The title page has had almost half of it cut out, but has been replaced professionally with similar paper at a later date (see photograph). There is also a location stamp to the top of the title page. To the next page (introduction) there is a small circular stamp. Somewhat obscured and un identifiable. This is repeated a couple of times throughout the book. Otherwise clean and tidy throughout the work, with just a touch of foxing. Frizac (1772-1865) was a native of Toulouse and surgeon. From 1808 to 1814 he was head of the secretariat of the Grand Duchy of Florence, in charge of the mendicity department. Louis XVIII appointed him a counseiller to the Prefecture of Toulouse. As well as this work on hospitals, he wrote a work on Prisons. 140 pages. 200 by 125mm (7¾ by 5 inches). Conforms to OCLC: 23358521.

140 pages. 200 par 125mm (7¾ par 5 pouces). Conforme à OCLC : 23358521.

The Advantages of Saccharin in the Manufacture of Aerated Waters, Cordials, &c

London: Wilson, Salamon, & Co., Ltd, 1894. Scarce reprint (improved and revised 10th edition) of the original business pamphlet had become necessary as, within three years of the original, the contents were viewed more as a practical text book than a promotional item. At the time, saccharin was considered be a good inclusion, as - to quote this booklet - it never creates acidity or heartburn, and is, in these respects, far healthier than sugar! Blue soft covers are a little creased at edges, and inside the staples holding the booklet together are somewhat rusted. Overall good. 48 pages. 210 x 135 mm (8¼ x 5¼ inches).
