    This copy was owned by Mrs Van der Poorten Schwartz - the wife of Dutch author Maarten Maartens. Almost certainly given to her by William Robertson Nicoll, who wrote anecdotes of 19th Century Literary history with T.J. Wise, and edited 'The Expositor' for Hodder & Stoughton.

Authors and poets included range from Ernest Hemingway to Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams to Gertrude Stein, and many more. This would be the first appearance of Henry Miller in a book. The dust jacket is fragile and has some tears and small losses to the edges, and spine of dust jacket has a split, but now protected by a clear wrap. The book is very clean and tidy both inside and out with no markings. Prelims are age toned, but clean. Overall a good copy. xi, 475 pp. 235 x 165 mm (9¼ x 6½ inches).

    Joseph Todd Gordon Macleod (1903–1984) was a British modernist poet, actor, playwright, theatre director and historian, and also a BBC newsreader. He sometimes published poetry under the pseudonym Adam Drinan. Whilst studying at Rugby School, Macleod was a close friend of Adrian Stokes, and at Oxford he was a close friend of Graham Greene. This is his final poem sequence, entirely autobiographical, containing poems which meditate upon his friendships and familial ties, and the process of aging.
