The Fields and The Woodlands: depicted by painter and poet. With coloured engravings.

London: Ward, Lock and Co. Attractively decorated hardback boards. Floral inlay to front board. No date. Circa 1872. 12 coloured illustrations by the Leighton Brothers. An unusual book. Pagination starts from page 49, as does the contents list. So pages are numbered 49 - 92. Clearly complete in itself, and too large for a sample. Perhaps this was intended as part of a larger work? It appears to comprise half of the only similar copy we can find (which has 92 pages and 24 plates but clearly a different title page and frontis). We can find no other similar online. See photos. Beautiful Leighton Brothers illustrations. 285 x 210 mm (11¼ x 8¼ inches).

Rossetti's single contribution 'The Maids of Elfen-Mere' had a profound influence on the Pre-Raphaelites and many of the other illustrators" (Paul Goldman, Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870). Probably William Robert Wellesley Peel, 1st Earl Peel (1867-1937) the grandson of Sir Robert Peel. Lady Eden was Sybil Frances Grey (1867-1945), the daughter of Sir William Grey, and mother of Sir Anthony Eden. Two of her other sons were to die in action in the first world war. She was painted by several eminent artists including John Singer Sargent and James Macniel Whistler. The later famously ended in a court case when her husband refused to pay Whistler's bill, and the painting was eventually destroyed. She died in 1945. A very nice association copy. 120 pages. 19cm x 13cm.

120 pages. 19cm x 13cm.
