In the detailed prospectus McMurray writes: We know the story, we know the characters, but the language of the text offers new rewards with each reading. Netherlands: 1960. An original study, in pastels with three nude images. Perhaps a basis for sculpture, as the work shows torsos, and is more sculptural than erotic. The signature is difficult to decipher, but appears to be E Schepp or similar.  The work shows clear skill, and is in very good condition. Appears to have been drawn in the 1960's or 1970's Mounted in passe partout.  The work is held in a glazed wooden frame. The price shown here is for the pastel itself, in the passe partout, but unframed. If you wish the frame, then this is also possible for a small additional cost. Edinburgh: 1870. Two beautiful watercolours of pixies playing together. Watercolour over pencil heightened with body white. Glaze and mounted under later gold passe partout with gilt frame Images and frames are in excellent condition. images size 115 mm x 70 mm Frame size 245 x 200 mm (9¾ x 7¾ inches).

Born in 1838 in Dunfermline, Scotland, he moved to Edinburgh, beginning to exhibit works at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1857, and then to London. Though he worked variously as a painter, sculptor and stained glass designer, John Lawson is best remembered as an illustrator of books and periodicals. His early work relates to those by his fellow Scotsman, Joseph Noel Paton, who is likely to have been a close friend. However, his later colour plates reveal his ability to adapt to a new market for popular children's books and annuals, and so work alongside his eldest daughter, Lizzie Mack.

Paris, Editions Raymond Schall, 1944-1946. First Edition. Three volumes in pictorial boards, each in its original plain card sleeve and held in a protective slipcase. The slipcase is clean but with a touch of rubbing. Splitting to the top edge. Each of the individual sleeves are in good clean condition. The one for Victoire des Français has a small bump (tear) to the spine. This has been reinforced with archival tape to the inside, but is still visible. The books themselves are all immaculate. L'étui est propre mais présente quelques frottements. Le bord supérieur est fendu. Chaque pochette est en bon état. Celle de la Victoire des Français présente une petite bosse (déchirure) au niveau du dos. Elle a été renforcée à l'intérieur avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage, mais elle est encore visible. NA. The photo-diary of a German family, who embarked on a world tour in 1928. 227 original photographs and 94 photo-postcards / commercial photographs are collected and captioned on 79 pages. The album was purchased on their journey at Niagara Falls, and is a limp leather, with an original painting of a native American to the front cover. The photographs vary in size, but are mainly about 14 cm x 9 cm each. Most in excellent condition. Often one man (presumably album owner) is marked with a small cross to the image.
Places visited include: The journey on S.S. Lutzow (commissioned 1907 as Norddeutscher Lloyd steamship); New York; Buffalo N.Y.; Niagara Falls; Toronto; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Native Americans (posing for tourists in ceremonial dress); Chicago; San Francisco; S.S. Taiyo Maru (Originally the German "Cap Finisterre" handed to the Japanese in 1920 as war reparations); Hawaii & Honolulu, with locals posing for tourists; Tokyo, Japan; Fujiyama; Geisha's and tourist photographs; Kobe; Shanghai; Hong Kong; Manila & Philippines; Singapore; Sumatra; Ceylon; Cairo; Genova; Davos; Switzerland & Germany. The card pages of the album have nicks and closed tears, but not affecting photographs. A fascinating record of a (presumably) wealthy families tour around the world by steam ship and train. 290 x 350 mm (11½ x 13¾ inches).

Bruxelles: N/A, 1910. From a Brussels collection, a photograph album featuring small (6.5 x 8.5cm) tourist photographs. These comprise: Port Said & Cairo (25 photographs) Mont St Michel (5) Dublin & Surroundings (15) and Glendalough (10) A total of 55 photographs. No date, but circa 1910 from the Dublin street scenes (not a car in any, trams and horses / coaches only). The photographs are in good clean condition. They are the well printed and focused images of commercial photographs of the day. The album, of mock snake skin covered card boards, is secured with cord. Each sheet is covered with a tissue guard. The album is a little bumped and with edgewear. Some of the images have become detached from their mounts, but still an attractive collection. Album size 130 by 190mm (5 by 7½ inches).

London: N/A, 1954. Beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The attendees captured here include H.R.H. Princess Margaret, The Duke & Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke and Duchess of Kent. Landscape album 246 by 307mm (9¾ by 12 inches). 4 blank leaves, 2 titles (printed in red and black). 28 black and white silver gelatin prints (193x245 mm) mounted on 14 leaves. A further 4 leaves of blanks to the rear. Full morocco binding titled in gold on the first cover in a double frame of gilt fillets, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, gilt fillets on the cuts, interior border highlighted with gilt fillets, binding signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London. A little bumping to the corners. Slight handling to the binding only. An inscription has been scratched away on a front end paper. Still a lovely copy. The first 14 photos document the visit of Princess Margaret who was then 24 years old, the next 6 photos concern the Princess and the Duke of Gloucester, the last 8 photos the Duchess of Kent (Princess Marina) and her eldest son (Now Prince Edward, Duke of Kent). Single album, or produced in a very few copies. Although this is a private collection, the indications are that it was produced by press photographers from the Daily Mail. To the title page, the address is Northcliffe House, London. EC4 - which was the headquarters of the Daily Mail at the time. A couple of the photographs can be identified as being used in the press at the time. Also identified in the pictures are Philip Rosenthal, of Rosenthal Porzellan, Germany. Lord Rothermere, Mr Stokes (The organiser of the exhibition).

Paris: Laboratoires M. de Rive, 1950. A set of 12 advertising cards for various products from the de Rive laboratory. These are together as a leporello in a blue marbled hardback cover with cloth spine. The cards are bright and fresh, with product details in French to the verso of each card. Excellent condition. The boards, although clean and strong, have some fading to the spine. Dated from the style of the artwork. Raymond Gabutti (active 1937-1974) was primarily a film production designer, but also provided advertising artwork. Closed 165 by 125mm (6½ by 5 inches). fully opened is 140 cm x 12.5 cm Un ensemble de 12 cartes publicitaires pour divers produits du laboratoire de Rive. Ceux-ci sont réunis sous forme de leporello dans une couverture cartonnée marbrée bleue avec un dos en tissu. Les cartes sont lumineuses et fraîches, avec des détails sur les produits en français au verso de chaque carte. Condition excellente. Les planches, bien que propres et solides, présentent une certaine décoloration au dos. Daté du style de l'oeuvre. 1884. A beautiful sketch book by an unknown French artist. This contains sketches of landscapes of Northern France. Also ships and parts of ships, and ink portraits of gentlemen. The landscapes is often around St. Malo. All skillfully executed in pencil, ink or charcoal. In total there are 13 pages of landscapes, 13 of portraits, 12 of ships and boats and 4 other sketches. There are also a few others not significant. All drawn between 1884 and 1900 - these are created by a skilled hand. There is a poem dedicated to 'Justine', with ends with the author / artist's name Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm (4¼ x 6¾ inches). Un beau carnet de croquis d'un artiste français inconnu. Celui-ci contient des croquis de paysages du Nord de la France. Aussi des navires et des parties de navires, et des portraits à l'encre de gentilshommes. Les paysages sont souvent autour de Saint-Malo. Tous habilement exécutés au crayon, à l'encre ou au fusain. Au total il y a 13 pages de paysages, 13 de portraits, 12 de navires et bateaux et 4 autres croquis. Il y en a aussi quelques autres non significatifs. Tous dessinés entre 1884 et 1900 - ceux-ci sont créés par une main habile. Il y a un poème dédié à "Justine", qui se termine par le nom de l'auteur/artiste Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm.

Na. A lovely large format photograph album of a tour of England and Wales in 1893. There was also a tour of Bavaria, Salzburg and Innsbruck in 1895.

The album starts in 1893 and has 38 photographs (mostly Albumen) of England and Wales. These are mostly large (24cm x 32cm) images. There are some smaller (18.5 cm x 23.5cm). They appear to be commercially purchased photographs. There are also a further 9 smaller (17cm x 22cm and 12cm x 18cm) images of cottages with descriptions on the back. These seem to be personally taken photographs?

The trip began with the Needles on the Isle of Wight, (24cm x 32cm) and continued with similar photographs of the Isle of Wight, Tennyson's house, Southsea & Portsmouth, Tintern Abbey. The tour then moved on to Wales, and there are photographs of North and South Wales, with quite a few of Betws-y-coed, and some bridges in the area. The trip moved on to Chester, with a number of photographs of Eaton House in Chester, and Hatfield House.

A second part of the album covers a trip in 1895, comprising 23 photographs of Bavaria, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

The photographs are all of good condition, still bright, with a touch of fading only. A few have light creasing, or the odd tear where they have come away from the album at some point, but overall a very presentable and attractive album of English and European topography from the 1890's. The album itself is black buckram with leather spine and corners. There is some rubbing to the boards, and some scuffing. A tape repair (with black tape) to the spine. The album measures 37cm x 45 cm. The photographs have hand written annotations below describing the view. There is some staining to the inside boards of the album and a few of the cardboard backing sheets are wavy, but this doesn't really affect the photographs.
