  • James Joyce's Dublin. by QUINN, Edward
    QUINN, Edward
James Joyce's Dublin. With selected writings from Joyce's works.

Nice: EDQ, 1973. First edition. Hardback in red cloth, inside original unclipped dust jacket. Book and dust jacket are both in very good / fine condition. 285 x 225 mm (11¼ x 8¾ inches).

With an introduction by Samuel Beckett, this fascinating collection of Edward Quinn's mostly b/w photography uses the same reportage style as Joyce himself often adopted. Rambling around Dublin from dawn to dusk Quinn found himself collecting what Joyce referred to as epiphanies. Not the literary kind, but photographic incidents of daily life and atmospheric places in Ireland's capital city.

From the bookplate, we can see that this book belonged to Helge Loewenberg-Domp. She was a German musician and music (piano) seller of Jewish parents who escaped to the Netherlands before the war. She later went into hiding with her family, and survived the war. (Her brother died in the camps). She was one of the first to import Japanese pianos to the Netherlands. In the 1970's she was knighted to the Order of Orange-Naussau. Three years later, she founded the Helge Domp Foundation for Music for young musicians. She died in 2021.

[vii]-xi, 40 pages, 1 leaf including VIII plates (including portrait, facsimiles) on 4 leaves. Unknown limitation, but states that this is a copy on papier d'Arches printed for M. Albéric Cahuet. Boards and slipcase are a touch dusty, but overall in very good condition. Inside, the papers, in French Folds, are in immaculate condition. A very nice copy. Albéric Cahuet was a pen name of Albert-Camille-Jean Cahuet (1877-1942). A French journalist and writer. His doctoral thesis was an attack on censorship. Although he wrote widely, particularly for L'Illustration, he is mostly remembered today as the author of Pontcarral published in 1937. 290 x 200 mm (11½ x 7¾ inches).
