A Meeting of Creditors Assemblée de Créanciers

London: Robert Cribb, 1798. An attractive re-issue of Nutter's caricature after Boyne. Stipple-engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand. This is the version with the title in English and French below. Closely cropped, with the titles protruding to the base of the print. Some small closed tears repaired to the rear. Attractive colouring. The debtor (left), a fashionably dressed man, stands meditatively at the end of a long table, stroking his chin, and looking at a bill to which one of the creditors, a butcher, points angrily: "[Squan]der Dr [to] Bluff Beef Mutton &c. £70". The butcher, a stout man wearing over-sleeves to the elbow, is seated at the table. Facing him is a well-dressed creditor wearing spurred…

He expected to be re-confirmed in the post but Colonel Evans (Sir de Lacy Evans), as represented in the sketch, stepped in, and snatched away the seat for Westminster; and the re-appointment to the office of Irish Secretary was postponed sine die. Sir F. Burdett, though stretching out his arm as if to save him, sees that assistance is in vain ; and the phlegmatic Lord Althorp, behind, appears to be saying, " Never mind, let him go." Print is 29cm x 37.5cm. It is pasted onto a mustard backing sheet of 35cm x 50cm. Both are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of light foxing to the satire. Small embossed stamp of authenticity (by Thos. McClean) to the lower left. A very nice copy. John Doyle was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1822 where he initially worked as a portrait lithographer. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity. See McClean, Thos. An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B. #CCLXI. British Museum ref: 1856,0510.397.

"An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P96. Lords Brougham and Plunket, on their return to London, from a visit to Windsor Castle, were caught in a fog and lost their way, chiefly, it was said, in consequence of the efforts which the postillions had been making to fortify themselves against the weather. Lord Brougham has mounted the ample shoulders of Lord Plunket, to take an observation, on the principle mentioned by Swift, who says, "It is with human intellects as it is with liquors, the lightest is ever at the top." The appearance of the drivers bears testimony to the fact that strong ale has had something to do with the disaster; and for the solution of the riddle of " Reform Bill," whose ale appears to have done the mischief.

John Doyle (1797–1868), known by the pen name H.B., was an influential Irish caricaturist, political cartoonist, painter, and lithographer. He is considered a pioneer of "polite caricature," a style that avoided grotesque exaggerations and instead relied on wit and subtle humor to critique political figures and events. His work marked a departure from the harsh satire of earlier artists like James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

    A Nude Study in Pastel

Netherlands: 1960. An original study, in pastels with three nude images. Perhaps a basis for sculpture, as the work shows torsos, and is more sculptural than erotic. The signature is difficult to decipher, but appears to be E Schepp or similar.  The work shows clear skill, and is in very good condition. Appears to have been drawn in the 1960's or 1970's Mounted in passe partout.  The work is held in a glazed wooden frame. Paris: France Soir, 1945. First edition / Original items A very nice photograph from the trial of Pétain and Laval. We cannot find any copy online of this press photograph having been used at the time. The trial of Philippe Pétain was among the most significant political events in post-World War II France, resulting in a conviction for treason due to his role in the Vichy regime and collaboration with Nazi Germany. The original silver gelatin press photograph was for use in France Soir* and has the newspaper stamp to the rear. The image shows trial judge André Ausset speaking at the trial of Pétain. 18cm x 23.5cm.

(*Libé Soir was a French newspaper, often linked with the Resistance during World War II, but it ceased publication in April 1947. After the liberation it transitioned into France Soir). Philippe Pétain, Marshal of France and leader of the Vichy government, was tried for treason in 1945, accused of betraying France by signing the armistice with Germany, refusing to move the government to North Africa, collaborating with the Nazis, and failing to resist German demands. The trial was dramatic and controversial, with public passions running high and a lack of clarity over what legally constituted treason given the extraordinary circumstances of the occupation. Pétain was convicted and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to his age and prior military service. André Mornet was the General Prosecutor at the 1945 trials of key Vichy regime figures, including Laval and Pétain. He was a French magistrate who served at a high level before the Vichy government but later became a resistance member from 1943. At the trials he strongly pursued death sentences, famously delivering forceful and unyielding requisitions condemning them for treason and collaboration with the Germans. His prosecutorial style at these trials was marked by his call for a "sacred hatred" against the accused, emphasising their betrayal of France.

Single album, or produced in a very few copies. Although this is a private collection, the indications are that it was produced by press photographers from the Daily Mail. A couple of the photographs can be identified as being used in the press at the time. Also identified in the pictures are Philip Rosenthal, of Rosenthal Porzellan, Germany. There are 20 students. The teachers have names in labels by each of them, and they are clearly recognisable characters. The work bears the publisher's seal of Wakasaya Yoichi, an eminent Tokyo publisher, who printed many famous artists. This is part of the reason for our attribution, as Kunisada often portrayed both individual wrestlers, and groups of sumo wrestlers and wrestling schools. He also regularly published with Wakasaya Yoichi. A excellent example, there is a light crease to the bottom part of the print (which could probably be ironed out). The edges have fractional nicking, but overall is in very nice condition. 37cm x 25cm. A rare piece. We cannot find another example of this particular woodblock print.
