Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité or Madame de Genlis (25 January 1746 – 31 December 1830) was a French writer of the late 18th and early 19th century, best known for her novels and theories on children's education. her devotion to religion, morality, and feminine submission, strangely contrasts with her own life and her art. Finally, a title "Souvenirs" followed by 12 engravings of the months of the year by Pomel. Contains pieces by Delille, Lebrun, Boufflers, Millevoye etc. Handmade end papers. Binding in excellent condition. Well preserved slipcase, slightly rubbed at the edge. Signed limited edition (one of 500) Original hardback. 26 colour serigraph plates, 2 monochrome illustrations and original pictorial boards by WILLEM, the pseudonym for Bernard Willem Haltrop. Beautiful condition with no flaws inside or out. Haltrop (born 1941) is a Dutch cartoonist, who moved to France in 1968 following a court case where he was accused of Lèse-majesté for comparing Queen Juliana to a prostitute. He continues to draw provocative cartoons. He was associated for a while with the Dutch Provo movement. 200 by 150mm (7¾ by 6 inches).

Haltrop (né en 1941) est un caricaturiste néerlandais qui s'est installé en France en 1968 à la suite d'un procès où il a été accusé de lèse-majesté pour avoir comparé la reine Juliana à une prostituée. Il continue à dessiner des caricatures provocantes. Il a été associé pendant un certain temps au mouvement néerlandais Provo. 200 x 150 mm (7¾ x 6 pouces).

New York & London: D. Van Nostrand & Sampson Low, Son & Co, 1861. Attractive first edition in original black blind stamped buckram with gilt titles to spine. The binding is quite rubbed to the front hinge with cracking to the spine edge. A little bumping. Small bookseller stamp from A. Franck in Paris to the inside paste down. Moderate foxing to the end papers, and light foxing, particularly to the edges of the rest of the book. The binding shows signs of having been re-sewn at some point to plate 17 - it would appear the block split. The repair is quite crude but only at this point and not affecting plate. Complete with all 77 engraved plates. Lovely Frontis engraving of a steam locomotive, "The Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works". Discrete library / owner's stamp to the title page shows that this belonged to the Chemins de Fer in Algeria. After the title and colophon, there is a full page railway map of Great Britain in 1858. Many of the engravings are very specific engine parts shown in full detail, others show whole locomotives. 192 pages + plates. 370 x 250 mm (14½ x 9¾ inches).

New York: The Hispanic Society of America, 1967. A sound copy of this first edition, with photograph and signature / inscription of the author. Original burgundy dust wrapper, which has several closed tears to the front cover (one with repair). Otherwise clean. Burgundy cloth boards in good clean condition. Inside the book is clean and tidy throughout. The front end paper bears a photograph by the author giving a speech in 1969, there is also a written text from the author, with a typed copy - of this pasted above it. The author comments on the length of time that the book was delayed. To the title page, the publication date has been changed from 1967 to 1968 in the same hand - suggesting that the book was actually published in 1968. Colour frontis, and 60 black and white photographs of Spanish book bindings. The book bears the ex libris of J. Peeters Fontainas, the Dutch bibliographer and Spanish book expert / author. 18, [ii], LX (plates). pp 285 by 210mm (11¼ by 8¼ inches).

L'auteur commente le temps qu'il a fallu pour que le livre soit publié. Sur la page de titre, la date de publication a été modifiée de 1967 à 1968 de la même main, ce qui suggère que le livre a en fait été publié en 1968. Spain: n/a, 1850. A nice example of a Spanish ambrotype photograph. The image is a 2.5 x 2 inches (quarter plate) glass plate held in a gold coloured soft metal frame (3 inches by 2.5 inches) This in turn is held in a leather backing (with some rubbing). some slight surface scratching to the protective glass. A very nice clean image, with a touch of hand colouring to the woman's cheeks. This from a Spanish collection.

Ambrotype also known as a collodion positive in the UK, is a positive photograph on glass. Each is a unique original that could only be duplicated by using a camera to copy it. Developed circa 1850, by the mid 1860's Tintype and Albumen photographs had superseded the process.
