1870. The label to the back of this black and white image states " Original-Graphik von Ernst Barlach" The image is clearly of Barlach. But it appears to be a lithograph of an ink original, rather than an actual ink drawing. It is difficult to be certain, as the paper has been secured to the glass at the edges, and could not neatly be removed (So we have left it secured). Although the image has marked similarities with other drawn works of Barlach, we have been unable to locate another copy of this image. There is possibly an artist's initials to the lower right of the frame (see pics). Underneath the frame, to the rear of the image, is written "6 abels wie ist 883" It is on heavy art paper, and in very good clean condition. Held in a white glazed frame. The frame has a few tiny nicks to the edges, but overall an attractive and striking portrait.
Image area 53cm wide by 35 cm high (13¾ by 20¾ inches). Frame area 67cm x 52.5cm. Ernst Heinrich Barlach (1870-1978) was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war. He felt foul of the Nazi party and was labeled degenerate. He did produce a number of self-portraits - largely woodcuts.

Los Angeles: Cinubia, 1996. A lovely copy of this first edition. Clean and tidy blue dust wrapper over blue embossed boards. 160 pages. 31 pages of text (in German) followed by 120 pages of black and white photographs published by Manfred Heiting of Cinubia on high quality glossy photopaper. With an essay by Holger Tiedemann. Keetman was a founding member of the avant-garde photography group fotoform and played a decisive role in determining the direction there so called subjective photography took. In the exhibition Subjective Photography put together by Otto Steinert in 1951 and in the accompanying photobook, Keetman's works have a formative role. From 1948, Keetman was represented with pictures in all major German and some international photo magazines. His work series Eine Woche im Volkswagenwerk (Volkswagen: A week at the Factory), which he photographed in 1953 in Wolfsburg, became particularly well known. His pictures of assembly line technology, car body parts and technical details of the Volkswagen Beetle were revolutionary, graphically designed photography through cropping and perspective. Arnhem: 1880. A photograph by Brainich & Leusink of the celebrated artwork by Thomas Brooks showing Grace Darling on the way to rescue survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. Her daring rescue of the survivors brought her fame, and several portraits, including this one by Thomas Brooks, now held in the RNLI Grace Darling museum. 165 by 110mm (6½ by 4¼ inches). Blank to verso, slightly stained, but sound. The image itself is bright. Albumen photograph stuck to cardboard. 165 x 110 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches).

Albumen print, or Albumen silver. The albumen print became popular because it produced a rich sharp image. The process involves coating a sheet of paper with albumen (egg white), making the paper's surface glossy and smooth. It is then coated in a solution of silver nitrate. It was popular from 1860-1890, and was often used to create Carte d'visite.

Antwerpen: Van Herberg 't Leeuwke, 1977. An attractive First Edition of this illustrated work. Cream soft folder with vignette of Breughel to the front cover. Inside are a colophon, and 12 leaves of illustration and text, with a final leaf of illustration only showing Breughel in modern Brussels. Bibliophile edition, in an edition of 500 numbered copies, 25 of which are signed. This copy is #20/25. Cover is a little marked and handled, but the leaves themselves, on stiff card, are in good, clean condition. The text is by Wannes, also known as Van Wannes, and Van de Velde. Illustrations by E. Nauendorf: NA, 1887. Nine leaves with original plant and animal studies. White heightened charcoal and partly pen and ink drawings, mostly dated 1887. The leaves are approximately 32.8 x 26 cm. The subjects are skilfully executed and include apricot blossom (white), cherry blossom (white), meadow ane mone white. - Fragrant Narcissus (white) & Portrait of a Young Girl. - Vine leaves, verso leaves of oak, linden, rose and pipe leaf. - 2 different plants. - Apple Blossom (White), White Daffodil, Flying Hearts (Red), Cockchafer. - Yellow daffodil, daisy. - Violet lilac, white lilac, lilac (light purple), forget-me-not (blue). - Violets and Cowslips. - There is a fascinating page entitled "Zoological Garden Leipzig" which includes sketches of goat, deer, stork, ostrich, ducks & two foot studies. A skilled and unusual collection of original sketches. A little darkening to the pages and slight edgewear, but still attractive. Richard Wintzer (1866 Nauendorf near Halle - Berlin 1952) was a skilled artist, dealing mainly in pencil / charcoal and who specialized in portaits.

Paris: E.P.A. Hachette, 2005. First Edition thus (French edition). A retrospective of Helmut Newton's work, showing his theatrical / cinematic approach to portraiture. The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. Köln: Du Mont Schauberg / Deutscher Bücherbund, 1960. A nice copy of this stylish photobook. Hardback boards illustrated by a Picasso illustration. These are a little darkened and with slight splitting to the spine, but still attractive. The text pages, in French and german, are somewhat darkened to the edges. There is a Picasso title page which is either stuck neatly to the edge of he colophon page or is in a French fold. We are unsure which, but there is not text within the pages. Introduction by Jean Cocteau. After the introductory pages are 62 full page photographs on glossy photographic paper. These in excellent condition. All in all, a decent copy. This edition published for the members of the Deutscher Bucherbund. First edition thus. 325 x 245 mm (12¾ x 9¾ inches).

Il y a une page de titre de Picasso qui est soit collée proprement au bord de la page de colophon, soit dans un pli français. Nous ne savons pas laquelle, mais il n'y a pas de texte dans les pages. A nice copy of this artist monograph. comprising a cover and seven page signatures (loose in French folds). 4 original lithographs by Miotte (including cover), three of which are colour, double page works. These were original for this issue. The soft covers are pretty clean, but the paper spine has split, and has now been repaired / reinforced with archival tape. Inside is in excellent, original condition, with just a touch of marking to it. The article alongside the text is entitled "Poétique de Jean Miotte" by Marcelin Pleynet. A nice copy. 28 pages. 360 by 280mm (14¼ by 11 inches).

Essen: Industriedruck AG, 1957. Cream softback covers. With a b/w frontis portrait of Burchartz, and 14 charming tipped-in samples of design - some in colour. Text in German. Inserted is a printed card which is signed in ink by Hermann Schardt. The card explains that the book is a gift to celebrate Max Burchartz's 70th birthday. The covers are slightly soiled and darkened in some areas. There is some wear to the head of the spine, and a taped reference number to the tail of the spine. Unpaginated. 295 x 170 mm (11½ x 6¾ inches).
Max Burchartz was a well-known professor of typography at the famous art academy. Burchartz is considered one of the most important designers of the modern age; among other things, he created the design of the modern door handle. With 3 short texts by H. Schard, J. Lampe and J. Gebser.
