NA, 1839. HOWARD, Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk (1791-1856). An original volume relating to inheritance provisions for his children, 1841. Sixteen pages, with the remainder of the volume unused. It is headed: "Information connected with the Norfolk Family Settlement at the 31st May 1839." It notes annuities to the Earl of Surrey £10,000, Countess of Surrey £1,000 and detailed provisions for other members of the Duke's family, includingthe Earl and Countess of Arundel & Surrey, and their younger children Lord Edward (Fitzalan) Howard, Lord Bernard Fitzalan Howard, Lady Mary Howard and Lady Adeliza Howard, born in the early 19th century. There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839
his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral
Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.

Attractive engraved allegorical title. Contemporary inscription to title showing ownership of Nicolas Sartonio of Miltenberg. Clasps are missing, vellum is browned and stained, slightly rubbed but still presentable. Paper darkened in line with age, otherwise still in very good condition. First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617.

Première édition latine de cette polémique, originellement publiée en français en 1610 sous le titre
"Institution catholique". L'auteur Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) était un jésuite français, ami et confesseur du roi français Henri IV et de son fils, qui devint plus tard le roi Louis XIII. Après l'assassinat d'Henri IV en 1610, Coton fut souvent victime de polémiques et d'attaques, qui imputaient le régicide aux Jésuites. Amsterdam et Leipzig: Chez Arkstée et Merkus, 1743. Although entitled a new edition, this is a first edition thus. A scarce Dutch counterfeit edition of this scandalous work. Text in French. Issued under the title "L'Ecumoire" whilst the original was Tansaï et Neadarné. Bizarrely, the original title was used at the head of each page - so if this was an attempt to disguise the work, it was a fairly thin disguise. The original text only edition - published 1734 - was addressed to Beijing. In this edition, a frontispiece engraving is repeated in each volume. This shows the Emperor of China and his Court with monkeys in the trees. The preface claims that this is a classic work of Chinese antiquity. Title pages both in red and black. Bound in full speckled leather, with contemporary designs in gilt to the spine, and burgundy title label. Very slight rubbing to the binding only, in very presentable condition. Internally, a fresh work, with just a touch of marking to the pages. The recto of the rear end paper has some doodle lines to it, in pencil. The book was both popular and scandalous from its publication. It was considered a criticism of the Papal Bull Unigenitus (against Jansenism) and of Cardinal de Rohan, and Crébillon found himself imprisoned following these accusations. The lead character, Tanzai, is looking for a wife, despite the prophecy forbidding him to do so. He falls in love with the beautiful Neadarné, and their marriage takes place. The wedding night is rudely disrupted, and they must embark on a fantastical journey to free themselves from a curse. It was so inventive, that it led Voltaire to write in 1735: "I don't know anything as crazy as this book. If I had done it I would have been burned." Le recto de la dernière page de garde présente quelques lignes gribouillées au crayon. Le livre a été à la fois populaire et scandaleux dès sa publication. Il fut considéré comme une critique de la bulle papale Unigenitus (contre le jansénisme) et du cardinal de Rohan, et Crébillon se retrouva emprisonné à la suite de ces accusations. Le personnage principal, Tanzai, cherche une épouse, malgré la prophétie qui le lui interdit. Il tombe amoureux de la belle Neadarné, et leur mariage a lieu. La nuit de noces est brutalement interrompue et ils doivent s'embarquer dans un voyage fantastique pour se libérer d'une malédiction. Romantic edition in 3 volumes of the Bible in the translation of Maistre de Sacy, adorned with inset plates engraved on steel by Peronard, Lalaisse, Skelton, Desjardins, etc. Text elegantly framed in a bold and thin black triple rule. 304, 647, 620 pages. Caen: Chenel, 1871. Original blue wraps, decorative titles and crest to the wraps - replicated to the title page. A couple of pages remain uncut. Overall in good condition, although there is staining and some (damp?) marking to the top edge of the covers. Very slight nicking to the edges of the wrapper. Inside generally clean and tidy throughout. Abbe Buguet was a Royalist, and traditionalist member of the church. He established a congregation to pray for the souls in Purgatory in Montligeon. He died in Rome in 1917. Enveloppements bleus originaux, titres décoratifs et écusson aux enveloppes - répliqués sur la page de titre. Quelques pages restent non coupées. The Edinburgh Review was one of the most influential British magazines of the 19th century. This translation was extracted from an article in issue CCII. Première édition. Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticising more Liberal Catholics of the time. The covers and the first couple of pages are quite soiled with what seems to be a combination of foxing and spider damage! The rest of the pamphlet has light foxing to it. Overall a not very good condition, but still readable work. 32 pp. Couvertures jaunes. Brochure contenant une monographie en français traitant du Pape et de la Liberté. A le timbre Impérial Timbre acquitté sur plusieurs pages. Les couvertures et les deux premières pages sont assez sales avec ce qui semble être une combinaison de rousseurs et de dégâts d'araignée ! Rouen: Chez Laurent Dumesnil, 1776. First edition. Contemporary quarter leather with imitation calf boards. The spine has panels with black labels. Gilt titles. The work is complete in two parts, with two title pages. Title woodcuts and initial and final woodcuts for chapters. Chanoine is the French for Canon - a senior clerical title. Clemence was the Canon at Rouen. Overall in good condition. The boards are clean and tidy, with minimal bumping. The leather is sound, with a little rubbing only. There is slight cracking to the surface of the labels, but no loss. Internally mainly excellent. The end papers are slightly darkened and have a recent owner's signature to the front end paper. The half title page to the second volume has a two inch closed tear to the bottom edge. The rest of the book is very bright and tidy. xv, [i], 1-382. [iv], 1-215, [i]. pp. Deux tomes en un volume. Quartier contemporain en cuir avec planches en imitation veau. Le dos a des panneaux avec des étiquettes noires. Titres dorés. L'ouvrage est complet en deux parties, avec deux pages de titre. A very nice copy. the green wrappers are clean and tidy, with just a touch of foxing. Inside, clean and tidy throughout. Laurentie was a French writer and educationalist. He was a staunch monarchist, and much of his work was produced in defence of religion. Livret original couvert de papier vert olive. Nom du propriétaire en tête de la couverture. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. timbre fiscal au verso de la page de faux-titre. Comprend également une publicité pliée à 2 feuillets pour « Histoire de France » du même auteur. Laurentie était une écrivaine et pédagogue française. Il était un monarchiste convaincu, et une grande partie de son travail a été réalisée pour la défense de la religion. 32pp (+iv pp).
