First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617.

Première édition latine de cette polémique, originellement publiée en français en 1610 sous le titre
"Institution catholique". L'auteur Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) était un jésuite français, ami et confesseur du roi français Henri IV et de son fils, qui devint plus tard le roi Louis XIII. The first is an attempt at a compromise between the established Church and Protestantism, with an appendix on Excommunication. The second book is a first edition dated 1663 with red and black title. Contemporary dark brown leather boards. A renewed spine with the original black leather label and gilt titles laid down. A little bumping to the corners of the binding, but otherwise sound. Italy: NP, 1695. Oil portrait of Jesus. Circa 1690-1710. On canvas with a later frame. Our copy is allegedly from the Spanish school of painting, however, following our own research, we feel it more likely to have Italian provenance. The title to the painting, states that this was painted after the Edessene image of King Abgar. This seems to have been a copy of the Edessa image - which relates to the mission to King Abgar V, a First century king of Edessa, who held a cloth bearing the image of Christ. This was called the Mandylion, and it seems to have been very similar to the Turin shroud. King Abgar was believed to have written a letter to Jesus, and to have received a reply dictated by Jesus. We can find only a small number of similar portraits of Jesus with the same (or similar) inscription. One is in the possession of a Church in Varralo (Italy) and is dated to 1694. (It was apparently painted on the occasion of the translation of the Shroud to the Cathedral in Turin in 1694). There are apparently in the Diocese of Turin three other copies of the Abagarum image. There is also a later copy in the Lausanne Museum. The majority of the portraits online are of a lower standard of portraiture than this example. Black background with the face of Jesus, surrounded by a halo, which also emanates from his beard (this halo showing shoots of light seems to be one of the distinguishing features of the Abagarum image). The paint is in excellent condition, with just slight bubbling in areas. There is no loss or scratching. The painting is on and old and darkened canvas, held on a sturdy wooden frame. The front of the frame appears to be a later layer, added to the front of the canvas surround. This is in dark green. The surround has some rubbing and loss of surface paint to it. The painted area is 50cm x 41cm and the frame 59cm x 49cm. Approximately 5cm deep. It is possible that this is a later copy of an Abagarum portrait, but is nevertheless a lovely example of iconography.

. Portrait à l'huile de Jésus. Vers 1690-1710. Sur toile avec un cadre plus tardif. Notre exemplaire est prétendument issu de l'école espagnole de peinture, mais après nos propres recherches, nous pensons qu'il est plus probable qu'il provienne d'Italie. Le titre du tableau indique qu'il a été peint d'après l'image d'Edessene du roi Abgar. Il semble qu'il s'agisse d'une copie de l'image d'Édesse, qui se rapporte à la mission du roi Abgar V, roi d'Édesse du premier siècle, qui tenait une étoffe portant l'image du Christ. On l'appelait le Mandylion et il semble avoir été très similaire au linceul de Turin. Le roi Abgar aurait écrit une lettre à Jésus et aurait reçu une réponse dictée par Jésus. La plupart des portraits en ligne sont d'une qualité inférieure à cet exemple. Sur fond noir, le visage de Jésus est entouré d'une auréole, qui émane également de sa barbe (cette auréole montrant des jets de lumière semble être l'un des traits distinctifs de l'image d'Abagarum). La peinture est en excellent état, avec de légères bulles par endroits. Il n'y a ni perte ni rayure. La peinture se trouve sur une toile ancienne et assombrie, fixée sur un cadre en bois solide. L'avant du cadre semble être une couche postérieure, ajoutée à l'avant de la toile. Celle-ci est de couleur vert foncé. L'encadrement présente quelques frottements et des pertes de peinture en surface. La surface peinte mesure 50 cm x 41 cm et le cadre 59 cm x 49 cm. La profondeur est d'environ 5 cm. Il est possible qu'il s'agisse d'une copie plus tardive d'un portrait d'Abagarum, mais il s'agit néanmoins d'un bel exemple d'iconographie.

Amsterdam et Leipzig: Chez Arkstée et Merkus, 1743. Although entitled a new edition, this is a first edition thus. Two volumes bound as one. A scarce Dutch counterfeit edition of this scandalous work. Text in French. Issued under the title "L'Ecumoire" whilst the original was Tansaï et Neadarné. Bizarrely, the original title was used at the head of each page - so if this was an attempt to disguise the work, it was a fairly thin disguise. The original text only edition - published 1734 - was addressed to Beijing. In this edition, a frontispiece engraving is repeated in each volume. This shows the Emperor of China and his Court with monkeys in the trees. The preface claims that this is a classic work of Chinese antiquity. Title pages both in red and black. Bound in full speckled leather, with contemporary designs in gilt to the spine, and burgundy title label. Very slight rubbing to the binding only, in very presentable condition. Internally, a fresh work, with just a touch of marking to the pages. The recto of the rear end paper has some doodle lines to it, in pencil. The book was both popular and scandalous from its publication. It was considered a criticism of the Papal Bull Unigenitus (against Jansenism) and of Cardinal de Rohan, and Crébillon found himself imprisoned following these accusations. The lead character, Tanzai, is looking for a wife, despite the prophecy forbidding him to do so. He falls in love with the beautiful Neadarné, and their marriage takes place. The wedding night is rudely disrupted, and they must embark on a fantastical journey to free themselves from a curse. It was so inventive, that it led Voltaire to write in 1735: "I don't know anything as crazy as this book. If I had done it I would have been burned." Très légers frottements à la reliure seulement, en très bon état. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est frais, avec juste un peu de marquage sur les pages. Le recto de la dernière page de garde présente quelques lignes gribouillées au crayon. Le livre a été à la fois populaire et scandaleux dès sa publication. Il fut considéré comme une critique de la bulle papale Unigenitus (contre le jansénisme) et du cardinal de Rohan, et Crébillon se retrouva emprisonné à la suite de ces accusations. Le personnage principal, Tanzai, cherche une épouse, malgré la prophétie qui le lui interdit. Il tombe amoureux de la belle Neadarné, et leur mariage a lieu. La nuit de noces est brutalement interrompue et ils doivent s'embarquer dans un voyage fantastique pour se libérer d'une malédiction. Ce livre était si inventif qu'il a conduit Voltaire à écrire en 1735 : "Je ne connais rien d'aussi fou que ce livre. Si je l'avais fait, on m'aurait brûlé". N/A, 1875. A lovely copy of this antique engraving. This is a reproduction of the Devil, sat in Hell, from Dante's Inferno. Originally engraved around 1475. This is a Nineteenth century reproduction (based on the chain laid paper - there are no printer's details). printed on brown laid paper. It is tipped onto a recent backing card with stamp hinges. There is a water stain to one edge (see photographs) although visible from the rear, this is not particularly noticeable from the front view. A fabulous engraving, and a nice, high quality copy. 23cm x 28.5cm.

Overall in good condition, although there is staining and some (damp?) marking to the top edge of the covers. Very slight nicking to the edges of the wrapper. Inside generally clean and tidy throughout. Abbe Buguet was a Royalist, and traditionalist member of the church. He established a congregation to pray for the souls in Purgatory in Montligeon. He died in Rome in 1917. Enveloppements bleus originaux, titres décoratifs et écusson aux enveloppes - répliqués sur la page de titre. Quelques pages restent non coupées. Dans l'ensemble en bon état, bien qu'il y ait des taches et quelques marques (humidité ?) sur le bord supérieur des couvertures. Très légères entailles sur les bords de la cape. Inscribed in the plate M(arten) de Vos invent(or). engraved area: 19 x 13 cm. Seet is 21cm x 15.5cm. Engraving is a good, clean impression, with a little darkening to the sheet. Two corners of the sheet have been cropped (not affecting plate). Held under a passepartout which is 40cm x 30cm. This is in good condition, but with a little marking to the front board. A nice copy. Johan Sadeler (1550-1600), was an Flemish engraver and illustrator, first of a famous family of engravers. He often collaborated with Marten de Vos.
