This is an ex library copy, but the stamps are not too disfiguring. A stamp and a couple of location records to the title page. Otherwise some small stamps to the verso of plates. A few of the pages have minor nicking to the edges - but well away from the text. Slight browning to the pages. Overall though, a good clean copy, with nice clear and well pressed engravings in a flawless binding. The first part of the work (Guillim's) contains hundreds of examples of Arms throughout the text. The second part (the Analogia Honorum) contains two engraved dedications, 9 full page portraits and 105 engraved plates containing hundreds of Arms and honours. All uncoloured.

    FOX, Charles James.
A letter from the right honourable Charles James Fox, to the worthy and independent electors of the city and liberty of Westminster.

London: J. Debrett, 1793. Second edition. A nice copy of this open letter to his constituents, from the political radical Charles James Fox. It argued his radical position and opposition to war with France. Significant here, as France declared war on the United Kingdom six days later. Although this copy seems to lack the half title and a blank, as it begins with the title page, and the next leaf has the signature B, our copy follows the pagination of OCLC 6595972. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts, end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second leaf (here lacking). Sewn with twine (as with all other copies we have seen). The covers have a little marking and edgewear, but inside, the contents are clean and tidy throughout. [ii], 43, [1]. pages. Charles James Fox, a radical Whig reformer, was first elected for a rotten borough in 1768 whilst he was still underage. He first represented the significant borough of Westminster in 1780, and remained their member of parliament until his death in 1806. 20cm x 11.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6595972.

What is interesting about this copy, is that there is a gift inscription to the verso of the half title, stating that the book was taken from the Iranian Embassy shortly after the SAS had ended the embassy siege in 1980. The annotation claims that it was taken from the embassy an hour after the siege, but apart from this seeming unlikely (with security concerns at the time) the date given is actually 3 weeks after the end of the siege. There is no evidence that this is true but a strange thing to make up and we offer it as an interesting oddity! 414 pages. 220 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches).

Contains three engraved frontispieces, 24 engraved portrait copperplates (one for each of the emperors, and naturally for George Castriot of Scanderberg, the King of Albania), and 1 multi-folded copper map showing the Battle of Saint Gotthard. Comprehensive work with an overview of the origins of the Turks, their religion, their customs, the "extent of the empire", as well as a description of the reign of each emperor from Osman I, founder of the dynasty, to "Mehmed IV", the reigning emperor at the time of publication. Internally, the work is generally in very good condition, with a little marking and edgewear to some pages. The large folding map has had a long tear across it repaired with archival tape. Now barely visible (see photo). The title states "enriched in this fourth edition with their intaglio portraits and increased by several beautiful curious remarks on the present state of the Ottoman Empire, which have not been inserted in the others." We have been unable to find a WorldCat / OCLC entry for the three volumes of this edition (only for individual volumes). 16.5cm x 10cm. Collation: [viii], 544, [xxiv]., [iv], 528, [xxiv]., [iv], 633, [xxvix]. folding engraving. Text in French. A rare work in any edition, there are no copies currently for sale, and we could find no auction records for this edition.

Collation : [viii], 544, [xxiv], [iv], 528, [xxiv], [iv], 633, [xxvix]. gravure dépliante. Texte en français. Paris / Lille: Société de Saint-Augustin, 1888. First edition. An unusual work telling the story of the Roman Catholic Missions to Africa. A large book. Soft covers bound in vellum with black printed titles and designs to the front and rear covers. The vellum is still and a little cracked with age, and there is a small hole to the spine edge. It seems a very luxurious way to bind a book in the late nineteenth century! The book blok is seperate from the vellum binding - but it may always have been more of a folder / portfolio as there is no sign of it having been attached to the inside of the vellum. The binding of the book block is fragile, and although it is just holding together, it is a little loose. The first page is a chromo-lithographed title, with gilt decoration in the style of a medieval work. The Jesuits monogram is to the centre of the design. There is a closed tear to the bottom edge. There are then 148 pages, bordered in red floral design. Full of illustrations. These mark the history of Christian missions in Africa from the flight of the holy family, to the late nineteenth century. Engravings (steels) in black and white and sepia throughout. Some in green colour. An attractive, rather fragile work, with light intermittent foxing. We can find only one other copy in its original binding. This was one of four works, dealing with Africa, Asia, America and Oceania, each complete in themselves. 38cm x 27cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 7635132. The Société de Saint-Augustin was in fact a publishing arm of Desclée, de Brouwer & Cie. This was a publishing house active in the late 19th century, known for producing Catholic literature and missionary works.
