Brünn [Brno]: Joseph George Trassler, 1801. Volume 75 of this encyclopedia. Engraved frontis and 67 engraved plates to the rear, several folding. (So complete). This volume contains the entries from "Passion" to "Linen" and many of the plates have wonderful images of people expressing different moods in the style of Lavater. Hardback, in paper covered boards (age uncertain but likely mid 20th Century) Original label pasted to the spine. Clean and tidy. Internally clean and tidy throughout, a little creasing to the edges of the folding plates, but overall in excellent condition. Brünn, the second city of the Czech republic, was at this time, the capital of Moravia, and had a German speaking majority amongst its population. VIII, 800 pp + plates.

. Famous economic encyclopedia written by a total of six authors. The Berlin doctor Johann Georg Krünitz (1728-1796), who himself designed the first 73 volumes, gave the name to and initiated the ambitious undertaking. After his death, the work was continued first by the lawyer and composer Friedrich Jakob Floerke (1759-1799), and by his brother, the botanist Heinrich Gustav Floerke (1764-1835), volume 124-225 compiled by Johann Wilhelm David Korth (1783- 1861),

Bucarest: Editions Le Livre, 1955. First edition in original illustrated dust jacket. Glassine protective covers over jacket. Wonderful colour illustrations by A. Demian. Text in French. Original ribbon marker. The book's cloth covering is in a good condition, with gilt stamped title to front and spine. The dust jacket is darkened at the spine and to the edges, and has some nicks. Overall the book is in a very good condition, and very clean and tidy inside. 374, [1] pages. 260 x 215 mm (10¼ x 8½ inches). Edition originale sous jaquette originale illustrée. Housses de protection en verre sur la veste. Magnifiques illustrations en couleurs par A. Demian. Texte en français. Marqueur de ruban d'origine. La couverture en toile du livre est en bon état, avec un titre estampé doré au recto et au dos. La jaquette est noircie au dos et sur les bords, et présente quelques entailles. Probably mid 20th Century binding. Complete with 12 engraved plates after Moreau etc. Boards are a little rubbed. No titles to spine or cover. Inside clean overall but with a little darkening and the odd stain. Still an attractive volume. Silverfish damage to the first couple of pages. [LXXV], 320. pp. Lengthy life of Fontaine to the front of the work. 200 x 120 mm (7¾ x 4¾ inches).

Inside the book has light foxing but mostly clean. Text in French. First edition thus. This is a reissue in one volume with the same illustrations as the 1st edition. 798 pages + 1 table. 275 x 195 mm (10¾ x 7¾ inches)

Ceylon: Colombo Apothecaries Co. Ltd, 1935. Scarce. First edition. Large softback. 33 rhymes, beautifully illustrated in black and white by Heather Hamer. Frontispiece, and all illustrations have original tissue guards. Soft covers show signs of age toning and handling. There is some wear to the spine with a small area of loss. Plain unprinted paper covers with no title or identification. Inside is in good condition, with some foxing; not affecting illustrations. 36 unnumbered pages. 285 x 225 mm (11¼ x 8¾ inches).

A collection of nursery rhymes and folk songs of the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka - known at the time as Ceylon. In the foreword, by Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike, he writes "In terms of pure decorative art Heather Hamer is spiritually in the direct line of descent from Aubrey Beardsley, and the application of her gift to Sinhalese subjects is a happy piece of good fortune for us." In her preface, Hamer states that most of the rhymes in the book were taken from an old volume of 'The Taprobanian' (1887), or gathered from local people, having been passed down over many generations.

Paris: Masson et Cie. This work on orthopaedia, published in 1901, was part history of orthopaedics, and part medical corset catalogue. It stated that it included 98 gravures, but most of these are black and white vignettes. The work contained 11 full colour lithographic plates engraved by LARTAUD and printed by Geny-Gros. A scarce item, the best example seems to be that of the Wellcome Collection (K30262). They also show the same 11 plates. The plates are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of foxing spots here and there. The reverse shows where each has been removed from the original book. (Not by us of course). 11 pages. 270 by 190mm (10¾ by 7½ inches).

Paris: Imprimé pour Henri Beraldi, 1908. First edition. A beautiful limited edition, of only 75 numbered copies (this being #66). Complete with 20 full pages fine engravings my Minartz (including two frontis illustrations). Some booksellers count the title vignette as a 21st engraving. Scarce in the original soft covers. Covers have some darkening and marking to them but with no chips or tears. Internally, the work is in excellent condition. A beautiful work, redolent of the Art Nouveau of Paris at the turn of the century. Albert Flament (1877-1956), was a novelist, traveller and journalist. He signed his pieces of "L'Echo de Paris" with the pseudonym Sparklet. The painter Antoine Guillaume worked under the name Tony Minartz (1870-1944) He painted numerous scenes of Parisian life. 70 pages. 340 by 240mm (13½ by 9½ inches).

Set in type from a copy of the Revised 1674 edition (Paradise Lost) and the first edition of 1671 (Paradise Regained). Twenty wood-engravings (16 full-page, plus head- and tail-pieces in each volume) were designed and engraved on wood by Demitrios Galanis. Title page and Initial letters designed by Anna Simmons. The copies were printed Bernard Newdigate at Shakespeare Head Press, in Oxford. Volume I, (i)-xii, (1)-442, colophon; Volume II, (i-vi), (1)-88, colophon. 370 x 260 mm (14¾ x 10½ inches). Sold with this item, is a prospectus for this work, dated 1930, by Cresset Press, New York. This is printed in red and black 720 mm x 500 mm. Folded. Contains two engravings (one full page) and a leaf of the text. To the rear, is an apology to the Golden Cockerel Press for publishing a Milton at the same time that they are.

No slipcase. Marking to the covers and an area of damp staining to the back of Volume II. Inside, Volume I is spotless. There is a fractional staining to the last few leaves of Volume II (corresponding to the damp stain on the boards). Otherwise in excellent condition.

London: George Allen, 1900. Second, revised edition. Two volumes. Original blue cloth, decorated in gilt and red. Binding in excellent condition, clean and bright. Internally clean and bright throughout. A lovely copy. Small bookplate to the title page states that these volumes belonged to the Byron Library, which was housed in the l'Hotel Continental in Rue Castiglione. 268, 290, (10) pp. 165 x 115 mm (6½ x 4½ inches). Original green cloth with decoration to front board and titles in gilt. A little rubbing to the boards and slight bumping to head and tail of the spine but still respectable. End papers showing the plan of Kensington Gardens. Overall decent condition with moderate foxing throughout. Gift inscription to half title page. Slight loosening to binding so that the book easily falls open to page 1. - but still holding well. Text in English. [ix], 126 pages. 210 by 160mm (8¼ by 6¼ inches).
