Dublin: A. Reilly, 1744. In two volumes. Presumably the Irish pirated version of Bentham's Cambridge edition of the same year. Bound in original full calf. With wood-engraved portrait frontispiece (by Vertue after Soest), and 16 fine wood-engraved plates (by Mynde after Hogarth), five of which are folding. Full index at the end of each volume. The first edition to include Zachary Grey's extensive notes. Volume I - xxxvi, 399, [xv] pp. Volume II - 414, [vxiii] pp. The binding has been skillfully restored, with red morocco labels, lettered, numbered and ruled in gilt. Boards are in good condition with only a little rubbing to edges and corners. New end papers. Small pen squiggle to end paper in volume one. Small neat signatures to title pages. Lacks the list of subscribers (often missing) at end of the first volume.
The work is directed against religious sectarianism. The first part of Hudibras was written in 1658, and the other two in 1664 and 1678 respectively. Very popular in its time, the poem was sufficiently popular to spawn imitators.
One early purchaser of the first two parts was Samuel Pepys. Whilst Pepys acknowledged that the book was the "greatest fashion" he could not see why it was deemed so witty. Hudibras was reprinted many times in the centuries following Butler's death.

Trajecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht]: Hermanni Besseling. This index volume forms Volume 4 of the works of Lucian published between 1743 and 1746. [8], xvi 500, [ii]. pp Full leather. The spine has gone, and the front and rear boards are detached from the text block. The title page and first gather are also detached. The leather boards have been held onto the book by tape at some point, and the outlines of this can be seen to the boards. Moderate foxing throughout. Sold as a complete copy of the index, in need of a re-bind. 260 x 205 mm (10¼ x 8 inches). Ce tome d'index forme le tome 4 des ouvrages de Lucien publiés entre 1743 et 1746. [8], xvi 500, [ii]. pp Plein cuir. Le dos a disparu et les planches avant et arrière sont détachées du bloc de texte. La page de titre et le premier rassemblement sont également détachés. Les planches de cuir ont été maintenues sur le livre par du ruban adhésif à un moment donné, et les contours de celui-ci peuvent être vus sur les planches. Des rousseurs modérées partout. Vendu comme une copie complète de l'index, a besoin d'une re-reliure.

Big Sur: undated circa 1947. First edition. A well designed promotional pamphlet that Miller sent to booksellers and other literary types to promote his 1947 work, "Into the Night Life." Signed by Miller himself, on 18th July 1955. Words by both Miller and the book's Palestinian illustrator, Bezalel Shatz. Comments from, among others: Beniamino Bufano, Man Ray, Will Rogers, Herbert Read and Anais Nin. Plain covers. Some fading. Internally clean and tidy. Book has obviously been creased at some point but is all in a very good condition.

"Into the Night Life" took almost two years to produce. Only 800 copies were produced, and each one was signed and numbered. This pamphlet was designed to promote the book, by giving insight in to how it was made, what it is about, together with a few testimonials from individuals deemed qualified to appraise its merits. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

Lovely etching by Cyril Bouda as Frontis. There is also a steel engraved portrait of Longfellow. First gather is a little loose, otherwise in very good condition. Text in Czech. 150 pages. 250 x 165 mm (9¾ x 6½ inches). Couvertures en papier souple avec titres collés sur l'étiquette imprimée de la couverture avant. Copy #215 of 3000 on Erasmus wove paper made especially for the book. With several wonderful colour illustrations (including frontis portrait) by Philippe Swyncop. Leather on spine has faded, all leather on boards has some rubbing, as does all edges. Pages are slightly toned, but there is zero foxing, and the book is in a very good condition overall. 191 pages plus table of contents. 255 x 200 mm (10x 7¾ inches).
Louÿs famous story of passion and rebuttal was originally written in 1898, and has been made adapted in to several films (one starring Brigitte Bardot), and an opera entitled 'Conchita' (1911). Paul Hagemans was a Belgian artist who was born and died in Antwerp (1884-1959). He was a painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. The was the son of Maurice Hagemans, he studied at the Brussels Academy under Is. Verheyden and H. Richir (1899-1906). He painted portraits, figures, genre scenes, views of towns and villages, landscapes, historical and religious subjects. Pas de date, mais vers 1918.
