This is widely viewed as one of the most important illustrated books of the Nineteenth Century. "...a book which is frequently seen as the first to contain a genuinely new type of illustration. Rossetti's single contribution 'The Maids of Elfen-Mere' had a profound influence on the Pre-Raphaelites and many of the other illustrators" (Paul Goldman, Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870). The Maids of Elfen-Mere was also used as frontispiece in Allingham's Flower Pieces.
