Overall in good condition. There is a little marking to the green covers, and rubbing to the paper spine, with a little loss. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticising more Liberal Catholics of the time. Couvertures originales en papier vert, avec le nom du propriétaire en haut de la couverture avant. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. Timbre acquitté sur la page de titre. Globalement en bon état. Il y a une petite marque sur les couvertures vertes, et des frottements sur le dos du papier, avec un petit manque. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé. Veuillot était un ultramontain français (celui qui place l'autorité du pape au-dessus de toute autorité séculière dans tous les domaines) et a beaucoup écrit en faveur de la papauté, et en particulier en critiquant les catholiques libéraux de l'époque. 63 [ii] pp.

Paris: Charles Douniol, 1860. Yellow covers. Pamphlet containing a monograph in French dealing with the Pope and Liberty. Has the Imperial Timbre duty paid stamp to several pages. The covers and the first couple of pages are quite soiled with what seems to be a combination of foxing and spider damage! The rest of the pamphlet has light foxing to it. Overall a not very good condition, but still readable work. 32 pp. Couvertures jaunes. Brochure contenant une monographie en français traitant du Pape et de la Liberté. A le timbre Impérial Timbre acquitté sur plusieurs pages. Les couvertures et les deux premières pages sont assez sales avec ce qui semble être une combinaison de rousseurs et de dégâts d'araignée ! Le reste de la brochure a de légères rousseurs. Dans l'ensemble, un travail pas très bon état, mais toujours lisible. 32 pages. 32 pp.

The original edition in 100 pages. followed by: "Response to the letter of a person of status concerning the rules of conduct of the Holy Fathers in the composition of their works", by Antoine Arnauld, Also 1654 104 pages. Later half leather binding with marbled boards, with label and ornate detail and text in gilt to the spine. Binding in excellent condition. Ex libris to the inside front board. Slightly later manuscript hand to the second end paper outlining the authorship, and giving details of the later 1683 edition. Internally in excellent condition. Slight darkening to the pages only. A very nice copy. The allegorical engraving is in excellent condition, with just a touch of edge wear. 175 by 115mm (7 by 4½ inches). The first part conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC: 718197303. Complete copy of this rare pamphlet directed against the Jesuits. The text is a detailed commentary in eighteen "illuminations" relating to the parts of the print. The last page bears a finished printing "illuminated for the first time on January 15 and for the second on February 18, 1654". (The final page of the response is dated 20th March 1654). One of the aims of the work was to rally the non-specialist public to the cause of effective grace, an objective pursued by Pascal's Provinciales, for which the Enluminures thus served as a dress rehearsal. This text contains many references not found elsewhere on the Jansenist movement in the provinces.

L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est en excellent état. Léger assombrissement des pages seulement. Un très bel exemplaire. Exemplaire complet de ce rare pamphlet dirigé contre les Jésuites Le texte est un commentaire détaillé en dix-huit "enluminures" relatives aux parties de l'imprimé. La dernière page porte une impression terminée "enluminée pour la première fois le 15 janvier et pour la seconde le 18 février 1654". (La dernière page de la réplique est datée du 20 mars 1654). L'un des objectifs de l'ouvrage était de rallier le public non spécialisé à la cause de la grâce efficace, objectif poursuivi par les Provinciales de Pascal, dont les Enluminures ont ainsi servi de répétition générale. Ce texte contient de nombreuses références inédites sur le mouvement janséniste en province.

A very nice copy. the green wrappers are clean and tidy, with just a touch of foxing. Inside, clean and tidy throughout. Laurentie was a French writer and educationalist. He was a staunch monarchist, and much of his work was produced in defence of religion. Livret original couvert de papier vert olive. Nom du propriétaire en tête de la couverture. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. timbre fiscal au verso de la page de faux-titre. Comprend également une publicité pliée à 2 feuillets pour « Histoire de France » du même auteur. Un très bel exemplaire. les emballages verts sont propres et bien rangés, avec juste une touche de rousseur. A l'intérieur, propre et bien rangé partout. Laurentie était une écrivaine et pédagogue française. Il était un monarchiste convaincu, et une grande partie de son travail a été réalisée pour la défense de la religion. 32pp (+iv pp).

Completed in a neat cursive script, entirely in Latin. The binding has chips with considerable loss to the spine. However the boards are firm and holding. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with minimal darkening to the pages. Still perfectly legible. 190 by 120mm (7½ by 4¾ inches). Veau lambrissé contemporain. Un manuscrit de 386 pages, décrivant la foi catholique romaine concernant la messe. Avec le contenu à l'arrière. Français. Sans date mais vers 1700. Terminé dans une écriture cursive soignée, entièrement en latin. La reliure a des éclats avec une perte considérable au dos. Cependant les planches sont fermes et tiennent. Rough cut page edges. There is a touch of fading to the cloth and a very pale cup ring to the front board. Slight bowing to the boards only. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with very slight foxing to the end papers. [vi], 78 pp. + plates

There is an anonymous biographical memoir of Hingston at the beginning of the book, written in a rather florid, late Victorian style. It is recorded here that she died in a tragic boating accident in 1907. In fact, her death was the result of a suicide pact, agreed with her fiancee Shirley Davidson, the son of Sir Charles Peers Davidson, Chief Justice of the Quebec Supreme Court. He refused to allow the marriage, as Aileen was a Roman Catholic. Ironically, in 1912, another son, Thornton Davidson - Shirley's older brother, was to die on the Titanic.

Paris: Girodet-Trioson, C1805. A fabulous large engraved portrait of Pie VII (Pius VII) delineated by E. Robert after a portrait of Jacques-Louis David. It was published by the lithographer Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson. Although undated, the original painting in the Louvre was dated 1805, and this was the period that Girodet-Trioson was most active. This is a close up of David's work, focussing on the head and shoulders. Title to base. The engraved picture is 48cm x 42cm. The sheet is 54cm x 45cm. Overall in very good condition, with just a touch of marking / darkening to the edges. There are a couple of tiny closed tears to the edge. Overall an excellent example of a rare print. We cannot find another example of this engraving.

. Un fabuleux grand portrait gravé de Pie VII délimité par E. Robert d'après un portrait de Jacques-Louis David. Il a été publié par le lithographe Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson. Bien qu'il ne soit pas daté, le tableau original conservé au Louvre est daté de 1805, période à laquelle Girodet-Trioson était le plus actif. Il s'agit d'un gros plan de l'œuvre de David, qui se concentre sur la tête et les épaules. Titre à la base. L'image gravée mesure 48 cm x 42 cm. La feuille mesure 54 cm x 45 cm. Dans l'ensemble en très bon état, avec juste une touche de marquage / assombrissement sur les bords. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées sur le bord. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un excellent exemple d'une estampe rare. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemple de cette gravure.
