Pictures satirise the modern European woman and her devotion to clothes, sex-appeal, swing music, Hollywood, the "new look", and the American soldiers. The portfolio is a little darkened, and has closed tears to the edges. Previous owner's name to the inside flap. The plates themselves are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. Each has a text in Swiss German to it. 340 by 250mm (13½ by 9¾ inches).

London: G. Baxter, 1853. Two framed prints of famous images. One is entitled: "Australia. News from Home". This first depicting a group of men inside a wooden building in Australia. Two of whom appear indigenous. The other entitled: "News from Abroad". This showing a family gathered around for the reading of a letter, whilst on the wall there is a poster promoting emigration to Australia. Both from paintings by Harden Sidney Melville, and engraved, printed and published by G. Baxter. They are cropped, so no longer have the Baxter stamp at the bottom. Tipped on to card and mounted in wooden frames under glass. Each measures: 110 mm x 150 mm. Total size including frame: 260 mm x 290 mm. They have a label to the rear which says they were framed by The Petersfield Book Shop. In very good condition. (Price is for the pair).

Over 190 reproductions of Buffet's work, plus numerous photographs and posters etc. In dust wrapper. Clean and tidy wrapper with fractional handling only. Leipzig: Georg Wigands Verlag, 1851. First edition. Hardback portfolio with the original ties to them. The stiff front boards have paper labels pasted to them. To the front board is the contents of the portfolio, to the rear a small device. The title label shows that there are seven separate tales to the work. Inside, the portfolio holds a title and 24 further sheets, some printed to both sides, but most to the recto only. The (inside) title pate is an engraved plate, with attractive vignette. This has a little foxing to it. In addition to the engraved sheets, are seven engraved pages which are printed with a cream / yellow background. There seems to be more in the portfolio than the title page suggests. Most of the pages are clean and tidy inside, with a little foxing and marking only. To the inside of the front board is the bookplate of Friedrich Preller the Younger (1838-1901). An artist, and son of Friederich Preller (unsurprisingly) a renowned German artist. 38cm x 28cm.

Held in a folding cover. Cover is ornately decorated to the front and blind embossed to the rear. Clean and tidy with fractional darkening. Inside, the flaps are a pale grey and also blind stamped. Slight marking where a paper clip (now gone) has been holding something. Inside are a title and 12 cards. The title has the the list of photographs to the rear. Schwind, the Romantic, was himself devoted with all his soul to the sister art; Not only did he like to practise, his whole being was absorbed in music. The laws of beauty seemed to him to be fulfilled more nobly than in the works of contemporary visual art in the classical musical compositions of Mozart and Beethoven, with whom he was well acquainted. What he sought there in vain: depth of feeling, clarity of expression, nobility of form, here he found it expressed. Schwind was influenced by his circle of friends with and around Franz Schubert and Franz von Schober. He took part in the "Schubertiades" (1821-1828), belonged to a reading society founded in 1822, whose members gave themselves names from the Nibelungenlied - Schubert was called "Volker the Singer" and Schwind "Giselher the Child" because of his youth - and repeatedly illustrated the same originals "that had also inspired his friend Schubert to musical utilisation" (e.g. Goethe's ballads "An Schwager Kronos", "Der Erlkönig", "Der Schatzgräber").

Japan: Matsumoto Studios, C1930. A beautiful hand painted panel of a humming bird flying from a tree covered in blossom. Seal to the bottom left. Hand painted on paper, laid onto brown card, in turn laid onto pale brown paper. Held under glass in a simple brown frame. This image is either a copy of, or copied by Matsumoto studios in London, who provided hand painted Japanese art works to the British public. This seems to be a higher quality painting than the Masumoto editions we have seen, and the red signature stamp is different - but the image is identical. A lovely item in excellent condition. Fractional discolouration to the pale brown backing paper only. Image is 19cm x 5cm. The frame is 35cm x 13.5cm.

Peint à la main sur papier, posé sur une carte brune, elle-même posée sur un papier brun pâle. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre marron. Cette image est soit une copie, soit une copie des studios Matsumoto à Londres, qui fournissaient des œuvres d'art japonaises peintes à la main au public britannique. Cette peinture semble être de meilleure qualité que les éditions Masumoto que nous avons vues, et le cachet rouge de la signature est différent - mais l'image est identique. Un bel objet en excellent état. Seule la décoloration du papier brun pâle du support est minime. L'image mesure 19 cm x 5 cm. Le cadre mesure 35 cm x 13,5 cm.

London: 1912. Zinc engraving. 54,5cm x 82,2cm. One of 125 proofs published, on thick wove with wide margins, signed in pencil, titled in pencil lower right margin. After publication, the plates were destroyed. The plate was etched on the spot in the winter of 1911. Plate 193 in William Gaunt's "The etchings of Frank Brangwyn: A catalogue raisonné." H.M.S. Duncan was built in 1892 and broken up at Castle's yard in 1911. This limited edition, originally owned by a friend of Brangwyn, has been part of a collection of the artist's work built over 50 years. Born in Bruges in 1867, Brangwyn exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time aged only 18. From the 1890's he produced profuse book illustrations and etchings. He died in 1957.

An attractive portfolio of 40 loose plates displaying the items exhibited at the U.S.S.R. pavilion at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts (L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs) at Paris in 1925. Red cloth spine with black hard boards and red label and ties. The spine is somewhat bruised and cracked but still holding well. The boards are a little nicked to the edges, but sound. Inside, is the title leaf, and a second sheet of two leaves, with introductory text, In French, and a table des planches. This outlines where each item comes from, and is repeated on each plate. These are in good, but slightly darkened condition. The forty plates (complete), are attractive colour lithographically reproduced images, laid onto stiff grey card stock. Titles etc. are printed onto the card. The images are in excellent condition. The card is a little darkened to the edges, and a few have some small edgewear, nicks and creases. Overall though in Very Good condition. A nice copy of an uncommon item. 390 by 300mm (15¼ by 11¾ inches)

Les planches sont un peu entaillées sur les bords, mais elles sont saines. A l'intérieur, on trouve le feuillet de titre, et un deuxième feuillet de deux feuilles, avec un texte d'introduction, en français, et une table des planches. Cette dernière indique la provenance de chaque élément et est répétée sur chaque planche. Les planches sont en bon état, mais légèrement assombries. Les quarante planches (complètes) sont des images attrayantes reproduites par lithographie en couleurs, posées sur du papier cartonné gris rigide. Les titres, etc. sont imprimés sur la carte. Les images sont en excellent état. La carte est un peu assombrie sur les bords, et quelques-unes présentent de petites marques d'usure, des entailles et des plis. N/A, 1911. Etching of a scene showing people gathering to haggle or trade. The etching is unsigned, and appears to be a scarce work. Undated but circa 1911. Under cream Passepartout Engraving sized 23 cm x 29.5cm. Passepartout is sized 385 by 430mm (15¼ by 17 inches). Print is in very good, clean condition. Passepartout has a small mark to one side, and is slightly darkened. The artists name has been written to base (and misspelt Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh painter, engraver and illustrator. Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris. Brangwyn's relationship with one of his admirers and supporters, the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren, led to his being commissioned to create multiple illustrations for Verhaeren's poetry book, Les Villes Tentaculaires

Passepartout a une petite marque sur un côté et est légèrement assombri. Le nom de l'artiste a été écrit à la base (et mal orthographié Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) était un peintre, graveur et illustrateur anglo-gallois. Bien que né en Belgique, sa famille est retournée au Pays de Galles en 1875 où il a reçu son éducation artistique, d'abord avec son père, puis avec le célèbre artiste William Morris. This is in black an white, and is signed by Carzou. It is a sketch of a Leonardo da vinci style figure, entering the gate into the garden at Clos Lucé in Amboise, Indre Loire. The work is dedicated to Gonzague Saint-Bris and states that it is in friendship for many hours of amusement spent in the company of Leonardo da Vinci* The book itself is in a spotless illustrated dust wrapper. Now held in protective wrapper. The book itself is spotless throughout. Full of colour illustrations by Carzou. Part catalogue raisonné, part biography, it is packed with attractive colour examples of Carzou's work across his career. 96 pages. 28cm x 21.5cm.

*Gonzague Saint-Bris (1948–2017) was an acclaimed French novelist, biographer, and journalist known for his works celebrating romanticism and history. He was born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, France, and grew up at the family-owned Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, a historic site linked to Leonardo da Vinci. Saint-Bris was a prominent cultural figure who founded the literary festival La Forêt des Livres near Loches and the Cabourg Film Festival. He was also a recipient of multiple honours including the Prix Interallié in 2002. We also have available an original artwork by Carzou which celebrates Clos Lucé and similarly dedicated to Saint Bris.

These are a little creased to the yapped edges, and there is a small hole / tear with slight loss, to the rear edge. Still in very good condition overall. Ambroise Vollard (1866–1939) was a pioneering French art dealer, collector, publisher, and writer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the promotion of modern art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Vollard played a crucial role in shaping the careers of many now-renowned artists. He is credited with discovering and promoting figures such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Vincent van Gogh. His gallery on Rue Laffitte in Paris became a hub for avant-garde art exhibitions, hosting groundbreaking shows such as Cézanne's first major exhibition in 1895, Picasso's first solo exhibition in 1901, and Matisse's exhibition in 1904. Circa 1910. 245 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches). A very nice copy. SEM - Georges Goursat (1863–1934), was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous, he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. Première édition. The title states that the image is from Italy, and has a 6. beneath the title, but we cannot find which work this comes from. The lithograph is clean and tidy. A touch of marking to the border edge only. To quite stiff paper / card. Image is 24cm x 18.5cm. sheet is 40cm x 28.5cm. Renoux (1795-1846) was a French artist and lithographer. Le titre indique que l'image provient d'Italie et comporte un 6. sous le titre, mais nous ne pouvons pas trouver de quel ouvrage il s'agit. La lithographie est propre et nette. Une touche de marquage sur le bord de la bordure seulement. Sur un papier/carte assez rigide. L'image mesure 24 cm x 18,5 cm. La feuille mesure 40 cm x 28,5 cm. Renoux (1795-1846) était un artiste et lithographe français. Il s'est spécialisé dans les cloîtres et les églises détruits pendant la Révolution française.

Signed by the publisher to the verso of the title, with a stamped number 80 (limitation unknown). Green hardback with a facsimile of Chigot's signature. Decorated with gilt titles, with the artist's photo pasted on; title sheet in red and black and decorated with a vignette of the author. The covers are a little rubbed, but sound. The sheets themselves are in good condition, but slightly darkened. 33.5cm x 25.5cm.
