Paris: N/P. A skilfully executed ink sketch done by Lesur in August 1918. The victory over Germany is coming closer, and Marechal Foch is presented to France, represented and embodied by Marianne. In the background to the right is a soldier, with an angel standing by him, hand on his shoulder (presumably he is a fallen son of France). The angel also holds his other hand above Foch, pointing at him. To the left, is a triumphal arch, with the sun setting below it. General Foch was promoted to Marechal in August 1918, and it is likely that this is what is celebrated here. The paper is slightly darkened, and there is a crease to the centre. A simple celebration of victory by a significant French artist. The frame is an ornate gilt frame, with glass. In very good condition, with a few bumps / nicks to the the frame only. Overall in very good condition. Sketch is 20cm x 29cm, Frame is 26cm x 35cm.

Henri Victor Lesur (1863-1937), was a French artist born in Roubaix. Lesur trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was a pupil of François Flameng. He was active in the French art scene, particularly towards the end of the 19th century, and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1887 to 1895. Lesur's work is characterized by elegant genre scenes and portraits, often inspired by the style of 18th-century French artists such as Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard. Lesur's paintings often depicted scenes reminiscent of bygone luxury and playful Parisian society, created as a form of escapism for viewers and collectors. He continued to produce art until his death in 1937. Lesur's work is sometime signed as V. H. Lesur.

. Une esquisse à l'encre réalisée avec talent par Lesur en août 1918. La victoire sur l'Allemagne se profile, et le maréchal Foch est présenté à la France, incarnée par Marianne. À l'arrière-plan, à droite, se tient un soldat, aux côtés duquel se tient un ange, la main posée sur son épaule (il s'agit sans doute d'un fils de la France tombé au combat). L'ange tient également son autre main au-dessus de Foch, le désignant du doigt. À gauche, on aperçoit un arc de triomphe, avec le soleil se couchant en dessous. Le général Foch a été promu maréchal en août 1918, et c'est probablement cet événement qui est célébré ici. Le papier est légèrement foncé et présente un pli au centre. Une célébration simple de la victoire par un artiste français de renom. Le cadre est un cadre doré orné, avec du verre. En très bon état, avec quelques bosses / éraflures sur le cadre uniquement. Dans l'ensemble, en très bon état. L'esquisse mesure 20 cm x 29 cm, le cadre mesure 26 cm x 35 cm.

Henri Victor Lesur (1863-1937) est un artiste français né à Roubaix. Lesur a été formé à l'École des Beaux-Arts et a été l'élève de François Flameng. Il est actif sur la scène artistique française, en particulier vers la fin du XIXe siècle, et expose régulièrement au Salon de Paris de 1887 à 1895. L'œuvre de Lesur se caractérise par des scènes de genre et des portraits élégants, souvent inspirés du style d'artistes français du XVIIIe siècle tels que Watteau, Boucher et Fragonard. Les tableaux de Lesur dépeignent souvent des scènes rappelant le luxe d'antan et la société parisienne enjouée, créés comme une forme d'évasion pour les spectateurs et les collectionneurs. Rorschach: Nebelspalter-verlag, 1948. First edition. A portfolio of 40 Halftone photomechanical prints in a cardboard folder (Complete). Pictures satirise the modern European woman and her devotion to clothes, sex-appeal, swing music, Hollywood, the "new look", and the American soldiers. The portfolio is a little darkened, and has closed tears to the edges. Previous owner's name to the inside flap. The plates themselves are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. Each has a text in Swiss German to it. 340 by 250mm (13½ by 9¾ inches).

Kölnischer Kunstverein, 1925. First Edition. A rare work, from an early Chagall exhibition. Pink soft cover catalogue of an exhibition held in April 1925, at the Gemälde-Galerie of Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne. The pink covers are a little faded and has a small area of loss to the bottom of the spine. The spine has been reinforced with archival tape. Inside, a small area of loss to the top of one plate has been visibly repaired. There is archival strengthening to the end papers. 18 pages, with four b/w plates. Covers age toned at edges. A few German newspaper clippings have been lightly tipped into the rear of the catalogue. Also tipped into the rear is a 12 page booklet, "Statut des Kolnischen Kunstvereins" (Statutes of the Cologne Art Association). Overall though in decent condition. 220 x 140 mm (8¾ x 5½ inches). London: G. Baxter, 1853. Two framed prints of famous images. One is entitled: "Australia. News from Home". This first depicting a group of men inside a wooden building in Australia. Two of whom appear indigenous. The other entitled: "News from Abroad". This showing a family gathered around for the reading of a letter, whilst on the wall there is a poster promoting emigration to Australia. Both from paintings by Harden Sidney Melville, and engraved, printed and published by G. Baxter. They are cropped, so no longer have the Baxter stamp at the bottom. Tipped on to card and mounted in wooden frames under glass. Each measures: 110 mm x 150 mm. Total size including frame: 260 mm x 290 mm. They have a label to the rear which says they were framed by The Petersfield Book Shop. In very good condition. (Price is for the pair).

Leipzig: Georg Wigands Verlag, 1851. First edition. Hardback portfolio with the original ties to them. The stiff front boards have paper labels pasted to them. To the front board is the contents of the portfolio, to the rear a small device. The title label shows that there are seven separate tales to the work. Inside, the portfolio holds a title and 24 further sheets, some printed to both sides, but most to the recto only. The (inside) title pate is an engraved plate, with attractive vignette. This has a little foxing to it. In addition to the engraved sheets, are seven engraved pages which are printed with a cream / yellow background. There seems to be more in the portfolio than the title page suggests. Most of the pages are clean and tidy inside, with a little foxing and marking only. To the inside of the front board is the bookplate of Friedrich Preller the Younger (1838-1901). An artist, and son of Friederich Preller (unsurprisingly) a renowned German artist. 38cm x 28cm.

Held in a folding cover. Cover is ornately decorated to the front and blind embossed to the rear. Clean and tidy with fractional darkening. Inside, the flaps are a pale grey and also blind stamped. Slight marking where a paper clip (now gone) has been holding something. Inside are a title and 12 cards. The title has the the list of photographs to the rear. The laws of beauty seemed to him to be fulfilled more nobly than in the works of contemporary visual art in the classical musical compositions of Mozart and Beethoven, with whom he was well acquainted. What he sought there in vain: depth of feeling, clarity of expression, nobility of form, here he found it expressed. Schwind was influenced by his circle of friends with and around Franz Schubert and Franz von Schober. He took part in the "Schubertiades" (1821-1828), belonged to a reading society founded in 1822, whose members gave themselves names from the Nibelungenlied - Schubert was called "Volker the Singer" and Schwind "Giselher the Child" because of his youth - and repeatedly illustrated the same originals "that had also inspired his friend Schubert to musical utilisation" (e.g. Goethe's ballads "An Schwager Kronos", "Der Erlkönig", "Der Schatzgräber").

Japan: Matsumoto Studios, C1930. A beautiful hand painted panel of a humming bird flying from a tree covered in blossom. Seal to the bottom left. Hand painted on paper, laid onto brown card, in turn laid onto pale brown paper. Held under glass in a simple brown frame. This image is either a copy of, or copied by Matsumoto studios in London, who provided hand painted Japanese art works to the British public. This seems to be a higher quality painting than the Masumoto editions we have seen, and the red signature stamp is different - but the image is identical. A lovely item in excellent condition. Fractional discolouration to the pale brown backing paper only. Image is 19cm x 5cm. The frame is 35cm x 13.5cm.

Peint à la main sur papier, posé sur une carte brune, elle-même posée sur un papier brun pâle. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre marron. Cette image est soit une copie, soit une copie des studios Matsumoto à Londres, qui fournissaient des œuvres d'art japonaises peintes à la main au public britannique. Cette peinture semble être de meilleure qualité que les éditions Masumoto que nous avons vues, et le cachet rouge de la signature est différent - mais l'image est identique. Un bel objet en excellent état. Seule la décoloration du papier brun pâle du support est minime. L'image mesure 19 cm x 5 cm. Le cadre mesure 35 cm x 13,5 cm.

Clean and tidy soft covers, with what appears to be a hand coloured illustration to the front cover. There is a very small nick to the bottom edge of the rear cover, but otherwise in excellent shape. A lovely piece of Dutch Art Nouveau (Nieuwe Kunst) design, with large margins within red lines. The illustrations each have a tissue guard with title. 96 pages. 21cm x 15.5cm. San Francisco: Chronicle Books LLC, 2006. Stated first edition. A tribute in photographs to the Blythe dolls of Marvin Glass. Part photo-book, part fashion photographs, Garan has documented her love of these commercially unpopular 1970's dolls. Each doll is pictured as if in a fashion shoot, complete with hair and clothing credits. Clean and tidy softback. Unpaginated but 156 pages. Mostly full page colour photographs of the dolls in different styles and outfits. 30cm x 21cm. A nice copy, a couple of pages have very light creasing to the edges.

A homage to Giovanni Battista Braccelli's 1624 etching series "Bizzarie di varie figure", reissued with Dadaist commentary for mid-century art collectors. A numbered limited edition. one of 500 copies on Hollande van Gelder paper. (The total edition was 525 copies). Slipcase containing folder 18 x 24 cm containing two booklets, the first with Tristan Tzara's text on 'Bizzarie' the suite of etchings by the 17th century Florentine artist Braccelli, Alain Brieux's notes, and a fold-out illustrating the artist's alphabet. 49 (ii). pages. with the other booklet, which is bound in faux vellum, imitating early 17th century bindings, containing a facsimile of the suite of etchings. (50 plates, complete). The two books are in very good condition, with a touch of foxing only to them. The portfolio has a little staining to the top edge. The slipcase, with paper label to the front, has loss of surface paper to the bottom edge. The base has been reinforced. The damage is not visible when on the shelf. 18.5cm x 23.5cm.

Le coffret, muni d'une étiquette en papier sur le devant, présente une perte de papier de surface sur le bord inférieur. La base a été renforcée. Les dommages ne sont pas visibles lorsque l'ouvrage est rangé sur une étagère. 18,5 cm x 23,5 cm.

London: 1912. Zinc engraving. 54,5cm x 82,2cm. One of 125 proofs published, on thick wove with wide margins, signed in pencil, titled in pencil lower right margin. After publication, the plates were destroyed. The plate was etched on the spot in the winter of 1911. Plate 193 in William Gaunt's "The etchings of Frank Brangwyn: A catalogue raisonné." H.M.S. Duncan was built in 1892 and broken up at Castle's yard in 1911. This limited edition, originally owned by a friend of Brangwyn, has been part of a collection of the artist's work built over 50 years. Born in Bruges in 1867, Brangwyn exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time aged only 18. From the 1890's he produced profuse book illustrations and etchings. He died in 1957.

N/A, 1911. Etching of a scene showing people gathering to haggle or trade. The etching is unsigned, and appears to be a scarce work. Undated but circa 1911. Under cream Passepartout Engraving sized 23 cm x 29.5cm. Passepartout is sized 385 by 430mm (15¼ by 17 inches). Print is in very good, clean condition. Passepartout has a small mark to one side, and is slightly darkened. The artists name has been written to base (and misspelt Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh painter, engraver and illustrator. Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris. Brangwyn's relationship with one of his admirers and supporters, the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren, led to his being commissioned to create multiple illustrations for Verhaeren's poetry book, Les Villes Tentaculaires

Gravure Passepartout sous la crème de 23 cm x 29,5 cm. Passepartout mesure 385 x 430 mm (15¼ x 17 pouces). La gravure est en très bon état. Passepartout a une petite marque sur un côté et est légèrement assombri. Le nom de l'artiste a été écrit à la base (et mal orthographié Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) était un peintre, graveur et illustrateur anglo-gallois. Bien que né en Belgique, sa famille est retournée au Pays de Galles en 1875 où il a reçu son éducation artistique, d'abord avec son père, puis avec le célèbre artiste William Morris. La relation de Brangwyn avec l'un de ses admirateurs et partisans, le poète belge Emile Verhaeren, lui vaut d'être chargé de créer de nombreuses illustrations pour le recueil de poèmes de Verhaeren, Les Villes Tentaculaires.

This is in black an white, and is signed by Carzou. It is a sketch of a Leonardo da vinci style figure, entering the gate into the garden at Clos Lucé in Amboise, Indre Loire. The work is dedicated to Gonzague Saint-Bris and states that it is in friendship for many hours of amusement spent in the company of Leonardo da Vinci* The book itself is in a spotless illustrated dust wrapper. Now held in protective wrapper. The book itself is spotless throughout. Full of colour illustrations by Carzou. Part catalogue raisonné, part biography, it is packed with attractive colour examples of Carzou's work across his career. 96 pages. 28cm x 21.5cm.

*Gonzague Saint-Bris (1948–2017) was an acclaimed French novelist, biographer, and journalist known for his works celebrating romanticism and history. He was born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, France, and grew up at the family-owned Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, a historic site linked to Leonardo da Vinci. Saint-Bris was a prominent cultural figure who founded the literary festival La Forêt des Livres near Loches and the Cabourg Film Festival. He was also a recipient of multiple honours including the Prix Interallié in 2002. We also have available an original artwork by Carzou which celebrates Clos Lucé and similarly dedicated to Saint Bris.

Printed on vergé ivoire 250g on the presses of the printer Somigraf in Casablanca. Benbouchta is a Moroccan artist, educated in Canada and Paris. During the 1990s Benbouchta headed the fashion and culture magazine Les Alignés. 300 x 240 mm (11¾ x 9½ inches). Première édition. Paris: Arnold & Trit / Hotel Drouot, 1891. First edition. The auction catalogue for the Drouot sale of the collection of Mr Ch. Noel. This was held in the Hotel Drouot on Saturday 21st February 1891. The catalogue features 69 items for sale, and there are ten full page photo-aquatint engravings with (11 of the items featured). Original cream soft covers over card with red titles. There is significant darkening to the edges of the covers, and some small bumping and nicking. The binding is slightly shaken to the title page, but still holding. Pages are a little darkened. The aquatints are in very good, clean condition, and all under tissue guards (these somewhat foxed). Also included is the entry card / invitation to the sale, which includes a list of the items going under the hammer. A nice collection of art works. The commmissaire-Priseur was Georges Duchesne and the experts were the Haro brothers. Unpaginated but 30 pages. 33cm x 25cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 762566448.

Le catalogue présente 69 lots à vendre et comprend dix gravures photogravées en aquatinte pleine page (11 des lots présentés). Couverture souple crème d'origine sur carton avec titres rouges. Les bords de la couverture sont très foncés et présentent quelques petites bosses et entailles. La reliure est légèrement abîmée au niveau de la page de titre, mais tient toujours. Les pages sont un peu foncées. Les aquatintes sont en très bon état, propres, et toutes protégées par des feuilles de papier de soie (légèrement rouillées). Le catalogue comprend également la carte d'entrée/invitation à la vente, qui contient la liste des articles mis aux enchères. Une belle collection d'œuvres d'art.
