The portfolio is a little darkened, and has closed tears to the edges. Previous owner's name to the inside flap. The plates themselves are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. Each has a text in Swiss German to it. 340 by 250mm (13½ by 9¾ inches).

There seems to be more in the portfolio than the title page suggests. Most of the pages are clean and tidy inside, with a little foxing and marking only. To the inside of the front board is the bookplate of Friedrich Preller the Younger (1838-1901). An artist, and son of Friederich Preller (unsurprisingly) a renowned German artist. 38cm x 28cm.

Sur le plat avant figure le contenu du portfolio, sur le plat arrière un petit dispositif. L'étiquette du titre indique que l'ouvrage comprend sept récits distincts. À l'intérieur, le portfolio contient un titre et 24 autres feuilles, certaines imprimées recto verso, mais la plupart uniquement au recto. Schwind, the Romantic, was himself devoted with all his soul to the sister art; Not only did he like to practise, his whole being was absorbed in music. The laws of beauty seemed to him to be fulfilled more nobly than in the works of contemporary visual art in the classical musical compositions of Mozart and Beethoven, with whom he was well acquainted. What he sought there in vain: depth of feeling, clarity of expression, nobility of form, here he found it expressed. Schwind was influenced by his circle of friends with and around Franz Schubert and Franz von Schober. He took part in the "Schubertiades" (1821-1828), belonged to a reading society founded in 1822, whose members gave themselves names from the Nibelungenlied - Schubert was called "Volker the Singer" and Schwind "Giselher the Child" because of his youth - and repeatedly illustrated the same originals "that had also inspired his friend Schubert to musical utilisation" (e.g. Goethe's ballads "An Schwager Kronos", "Der Erlkönig", "Der Schatzgräber").

This image is either a copy of, or copied by Matsumoto studios in London, who provided hand painted Japanese art works to the British public. This seems to be a higher quality painting than the Masumoto editions we have seen, and the red signature stamp is different - but the image is identical. A lovely item in excellent condition. Fractional discolouration to the pale brown backing paper only. Image is 19cm…

    . Un magnifique panneau peint à la main d'un oiseau qui fredonne et s'envole d'un arbre couvert de fleurs. Sceau en bas à gauche. Peint à la main sur papier, posé sur une carte brune, elle-même posée sur un papier brun pâle. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre marron. Cette image est soit une copie, soit une copie des studios Matsumoto à Londres, qui fournissaient des œuvres d'art japonaises peintes à la main au public britannique. Cette peinture semble être de meilleure qualité que les éditions Masumoto que nous avons vues, et le cachet rouge de la signature est différent - mais l'image est identique. Un bel objet en excellent état. Seule la décoloration du papier brun pâle du support est minime. L'image mesure 19 cm x 5 cm. Le cadre mesure 35 cm x 13,5 cm.

Duncan was built in 1892 and broken up at Castle's yard in 1911. This limited edition, originally owned by a friend of Brangwyn, has been part of a collection of the artist's work built over 50 years. Born in Bruges in 1867, Brangwyn exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time aged only 18. From the 1890's he produced profuse…

Red cloth spine with black hard boards and red label and ties. The spine is somewhat bruised and cracked but still holding well. The boards are a little nicked to the edges, but sound. Inside, is the title leaf, and a second sheet of two leaves, with introductory text, In French, and a table des planches. This outlines where each item comes from, and is repeated on each plate. These are in good, but slightly darkened condition. The forty plates (complete), are attractive colour lithographically reproduced images, laid onto stiff grey card stock. Titles etc. are printed onto the card. The images are in excellent condition. The card is a little darkened to the edges, and a few have some small edgewear, nicks and creases. Overall though in Very Good condition. A nice copy of an uncommon item. 390 by 300mm (15¼ by 11¾ inches)

    . Première édition. Un portfolio attrayant de 40 planches détachées montrant les objets exposés au pavillon de l'URSS à l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs à Paris en 1925. Dos en toile rouge, cartons noirs, étiquette et attaches rouges. Le dos est quelque peu meurtri et fissuré, mais il tient encore bien. Les planches sont un peu entaillées sur les bords, mais elles sont saines. A l'intérieur, on trouve le feuillet de titre, et un deuxième feuillet de deux feuilles, avec un texte d'introduction, en français, et une table des planches. Cette dernière indique la provenance de chaque élément et est répétée sur chaque planche. Les planches sont en bon état, mais légèrement assombries. Les quarante planches (complètes) sont des images attrayantes reproduites par lithographie en couleurs, posées sur du papier cartonné gris rigide. Les titres, etc. sont imprimés sur la carte. Les images sont en excellent état. La carte est un peu assombrie sur les bords, et quelques-unes présentent de petites marques d'usure, des entailles et des plis. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un très bon état. Une belle copie d'un article peu commun. 390 x 300 mm

Passepartout has a small mark to one side, and is slightly darkened. The artists name has been written to base (and misspelt Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh painter, engraver and illustrator. Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris. Brangwyn's relationship with one of his admirers and supporters, the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren, led to his being commissioned to create multiple illustrations for Verhaeren's poetry book, Les Villes Tentaculaires

    *Gonzague Saint-Bris (1948–2017) was an acclaimed French novelist, biographer, and journalist known for his works celebrating romanticism and history. He was born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, France, and grew up at the family-owned Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, a historic site linked to Leonardo da Vinci. Saint-Bris was a prominent cultural figure who founded the literary festival La Forêt des Livres near Loches and the Cabourg Film Festival. He was also a recipient of multiple honours including the Prix Interallié in 2002. We also have available an original artwork by Carzou which celebrates Clos Lucé and similarly dedicated to Saint Bris.
