The covers are in very good condition, with just a little bumping. A few small marks to the rear cover. Second edition of 1874 (First edition was 1872). Frontis engraving of mother presenting the book to her children. "A beautiful book in a beautiful dress, with pictures and words for you to guess." Title page with lovely engraved vignette of the hare and the tortoise. Preface by Uncle William. This includes the comment to the children "In order to puzzle you a little..... I have made the printer insert a little picture here and there instead of a work." Herein lies the charm of this edition. The "word" vignettes are charming engravings. Each page is surrounded by a frame with several morals for the children to absorb. Just in case they don't get the point, to the rear is the "key to the fables". 22 tales. 83 pages. My favourite moral is "And don't be all your days trotting on a Cabbage-Leaf". End[a[ers of a cheaper stock, and subsequently heavily foxed. The rest ofg the pages are very clean. 83 pages. 265 x 210 mm (10½ x 8¼ inches).

London: R. Ackermann, 1827. Four volumes. Hardback. Original blue paper covered boards (interim bindings), with yellow paper labels to spines. Boards a little stained and rubbed. Complete with all 81 colour engraved costume plates. Although the title pages state 84 plates, in fact the Errata and plate index show that the Chelsea Pensioner and the Greenwich Pensioner are on a single plate, elsewhere the Fisherwoman and the Dustman are on the same plate, and the plate of the Dr of Music is listed twice. So in fact there are 81 plates and the work is complete. Some light foxing to the margins. A little splitting to the binding of Volume 2. Overall a very nice copy.

Owner's bookplate to the inside front board for Edward Francis Hutton.* Internally the book is in very good condition, with a little darkening to the page edges only. A few minor foxing spots. He was passionate about yachts, and one figures prominently on his bookplate. Of interest today, he built the 127 room Mar-a-lago as a winter residence in 1927. Donated to the nation on his wife's death in 1973, it was later acquired by Donald Trump, and proved temporarily useful for storing state secrets (allegedly).

(This has been reinforced with archival tape to the inside rear hinge). Text in Dutch. 350 x 270 mm (13¾ x 10¾ inches). Rare publication of theater decorations by the Dutch artist François-Joseph PfeifferJr. (Liège 1778-1835). Illustrated with 9 lithograph plates (including portrait) with facing tissue guards. With accompanying letter-press text within red ornamental borders. Contains a biography by Gerit van Ernst Koning (1794-1853), and verse descriptions by J. van Lennep (1802-1868). It also includes a short list of theater scenes created by Pfeiffer.

Created in 1928, this tale of morality was Marcel Pagnol's first theatrical success. Full of colour illustrations by Albert Dubout. Text in French. Slipcase has some rubbing / fading to outer slipcase. Inside cover and book are in an excellent condition. 220 x 160 mm (8¾ x 6¼ inches). Un des 5000 exemplaires sur Vélin Crève-Cœur numérotés. Dans sa housse et son étui d'origine. Couverture souple en cristal. Créé en 1928, ce conte de moralité est le premier succès théâtral de Marcel Pagnol. Carayon, smooth spine, gilt title, pages untrimmed, covers and corners very slightly bumped. There is a slight whitening to some areas of the brown leather. Attractive triangular ex libris to the inside of the front board. Still, overall a beautiful copy. 56 pp plus additional plates. 300 x 210 mm (11¾ x 8¼ inches).

Unknown. A lovely woodcut. Undated but circa 1910. Three young ladies sitting on a boat by a lake side. One is playing the guitar, and the other two listening. Woodcut is 17cm x 20cm. Printed on fine chine papier. Paper is 48cm x 33cm. Signed by Bossert below the image. A little creasing to the paper, particularly at the edges, but overall and attractive piece. Otto Richard Bossert (1874–1919), also known as O. R. Bossert, was a German portrait painter, art teacher and graphic artist. Among his works are portrait etchings of historical figures and color woodcuts. His early works were influenced by Max Klinger. Bossert was born in Heidelberg and studied in Karlsruhe, before settling in Leipzig. In 1904 he began teaching at the Leipzig Academy for the Graphic Arts. In 1911 he spent a summer in Normandy and Brittany, where he was introduced to the art of Paul Cézanne. Bossert was a winner of 1914 Villa Romana prize. He died in 1919 in Leipzig. (Wikipedia).

La gravure sur bois mesure 17 cm x 20 cm. Imprimée sur du papier fin chiné. Le papier mesure 48 cm x 33 cm. Signé par Bossert sous l'image. Le papier est un peu froissé, en particulier sur les bords, mais il s'agit dans l'ensemble d'une belle œuvre. Otto Richard Bossert (1874-1919), également connu sous le nom de O. R. Bossert, était un portraitiste, professeur d'art et artiste graphique allemand. Parmi ses œuvres figurent des portraits à l'eau-forte de personnages historiques et des gravures sur bois en couleur. N/A, 1875. A collection of 90 full page lithographs from Vanity Fair, illustrations by SPY (Sir Leslie Ward) and APE (Carlo Pellegrini) as well as a large number that are anonymous. Lithographed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son. Facing most of the lithographs, is the biography, mostly written by Gibson as Jehu Junior, written in a neat manuscript hand. (There is a tipped in plate bearing the owner / compiler's name and signature to the inside front board, but we have been unable to identify them). Four of the biographies have the subject's autograph tipped in to the page. These are Sir Francis Grant (Scottish portrait painter and President of the Royal Academy). He was a keen hunter, and this also has a large sketch of a huntsman by Grant tipped in. Richard Boyle (9th Earl of Cork and Orrery). Frederic Leighton (Painter, draughtsman and sculptor. He also had the distinction of the shortest peerage in history. He died the day after being made a Lord). Reverend Arthur Stanley (Dean of Westminster). Unpaginated, but approximately 180 pages. with 90 lithographs pasted in and approximately 85 biographies. The scrapbooks have black boards and black leather spines. The spines are significantly rubbed, and have some splitting. There are gilt titles to the front boards. Inside, the volumes are both in good condition, with a touch of marking, but overall very clean condition. 380 by 270mm (15 by 10¾ inches). Evidence of ex-libris having been removed from FFEP. Original book is a little grubby / foxed, and pages age toned, but still in a good condition.
Geo London was the pseudonym of Parisian journalist Georges Samuel. He was a (often unpopular) court reporter for many important trials, even once meeting Al Capone, and wrote many works before his death in 1951. Première édition. 1865. Fabulous decorative gilt and black ruled red cloth album. Comprising 40 leaves with around 600 intricate cut-outs of commemorative cards and images. Many of these are from early Christmas cards and winter themes - mostly English text. Includes some fabulous flowers, birds, butterflies, traditional dress / costumes and caricatures - mostly French text. All beautifully cut out, then thoughtfully and carefully assembled. One or two are dated. Including an advertising postcard (possibly once perfumed) for Rimmel, dated 1865. Therefore, we assume it was created during the period 1860 - 1875. Boards are bumped on corners but otherwise the gilt clean and bright. Endpapers are toned / lightly foxed. Each leaf has a blank verso, but the cuts have transferred their shapes onto the verso preceding. 300 x 250 mm (11¾ x 9¾ inches). Fabuleux album décoratif en toile rouge lignée dorée et noire.
