London: NA. A nice photograph album, from Circa 1918. Half faux leather with card boards and cord ties. This contains 22 tourist photographs of London. All are size 6.5cm x 8.5cm. Nice sepia tone with white numbers. These seem to be mainly (or possibly all) by Valentine. There are handwritten captions alongside many of the photographs of the major London landmarks. The dating is from the style and vehicles shown. There are then a number of blank pages. To the rear of the album are 4 larger (10cm x 14cm photographs with 3 exteriors and one interior of British country houses. These would appear to be slightly later photographs - perhaps 1930's. A total of 26 photographs. Provenance: From a Brussels antique market, Small photograph (from Brussels studio) with a photograph of an aircraft, circa 1950's. A nice collection. Album dimensions 175 by 205mm (7 by 8 inches).

Arnhem: 1880. A photograph by Brainich & Leusink of the celebrated artwork by Thomas Brooks showing Grace Darling on the way to rescue survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. Her daring rescue of the survivors brought her fame, and several portraits, including this one by Thomas Brooks, now held in the RNLI Grace Darling museum. 165 by 110mm (6½ by 4¼ inches). Blank to verso, slightly stained, but sound. The image itself is bright. Albumen photograph stuck to cardboard. 165 x 110 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches).

Albumen print, or Albumen silver. The albumen print became popular because it produced a rich sharp image. The process involves coating a sheet of paper with albumen (egg white), making the paper's surface glossy and smooth. It is then coated in a solution of silver nitrate. It was popular from 1860-1890, and was often used to create Carte d'visite.

Cordoba (Spain): NA, 1880. An attractive photograph of the river Guadalqivir, and the Roman Bridge in Cordoba, with the Molino de St Antonio in the foreground. By an unknown photographer. Circa 1880-1890. Pasted onto a stiff grey mounting card, with calligraphic title beneath (Spelt Cordova). The photograph is in good condition, with a slight fading to the left edge. The mounting card is in good clean condition. Dating from this period, it is difficult to distinguish between and albumen print and an early silver gelatin card mounted photograph. We lean towards the latter. Photograph size is 220mm x 275mm. The mount size is 345mm x 410mm

The mounting card is in good clean condition. Dating from this period, it is difficult to distinguish between and albumen print and an early silver gelatin card mounted photograph. We lean towards the latter. Photograph size is 210mm x 155mm. The mount size is 33omm x 245mm

Paris: NP, 1968. A large (40 cm x 29.5cm) black and white silver print / silver gelatin photograph of a Paris wall in May 1968. The photograph shows a poster of Hitler hiding behind a mask of Charles de Gaulle. He is wearing the Cross of Lorraine as his armband. (The Free French forces in world war 2, under de Gaulle, had used this symbol). This is pinned over a background which states "CRS SS" multiple times. The CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) was the National Reserve Force to deal with strikes and demonstrations. In fact this slogan dates back to 1948 when the CRS was first formed. The wall also shows a hand written sign for a manifestation in the evening of the 19th at St Lazare. Public demonstrations were often (and are still often) held in the space in front of the St Lazare station. This is almost certainly a large print of a reportage / press photograph of the time. In red ink to the reverse is written "68." The central poster was used in the 1968 student riots, and although we have been unable to trace this photograph, there is an "internet ghost" of it, which states it was taken in May 1968. Condition is excellent, with no significant marks or dirt to it.

. Grande photographie argentique noir et blanc (40 cm x 29,5 cm) d'un mur de Paris en mai 1968. La photographie montre une affiche d'Hitler cachée derrière un masque de Charles de Gaulle, qui porte la Croix de Lorraine en guise de brassard. Ce dernier porte la Croix de Lorraine en guise de brassard (les forces françaises libres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, sous la direction de de Gaulle, avaient utilisé ce symbole). Le tout est épinglé sur un fond où l'on peut lire plusieurs fois « CRS SS ». Les CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) étaient la force de réserve nationale chargée de gérer les grèves et les manifestations. En fait, ce slogan remonte à 1948, date de la création des CRS. Le mur montre également une pancarte écrite à la main pour une manifestation dans la soirée du 19 à St Lazare. Les manifestations publiques étaient souvent (et sont encore souvent) organisées dans l'espace devant la gare St Lazare. Il s'agit très certainement d'un grand tirage d'un reportage ou d'une photographie de presse de l'époque. Au verso, on peut lire « 68 » à l'encre rouge. L'affiche centrale a été utilisée lors des émeutes étudiantes de 1968, et bien que nous n'ayons pas été en mesure de retrouver cette photographie, il existe un « fantôme internet » de celle-ci, qui indique qu'elle a été prise en mai 1968. L'état de l'affiche est excellent, elle ne présente aucune marque ou salissure significative.

The front of the dust jacket has some marks, small tears / nicks to edges, a small surface loss, and a stain. Cloth boards are faded to the bottom and the boards are slightly warped. Neat bookseller label to the front of the dust jacket from La Librairie Francaise Peking - Tientsin. The bookshop was in the lobby of the Grand Hotel de Pekin and had a branch in Tientsin. Text and sepia reproductions of photographs taken by Ernst Boerschmann, documenting his journey in the 12 provinces: Zhili, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Szechuan, Hupei, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang. Boerschmann was the first Westerner to systematically document Chinese religious architecture. Captions in English, German, French and Italian. xxvi, 288 pp. 315 x 245 mm (12½ x 9¾ inches). Paris: E.P.A. Hachette, 2005. First Edition thus (French edition). A retrospective of Helmut Newton's work, showing his theatrical / cinematic approach to portraiture. The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. Köln: Du Mont Schauberg / Deutscher Bücherbund, 1960. A nice copy of this stylish photobook. Hardback boards illustrated by a Picasso illustration. These are a little darkened and with slight splitting to the spine, but still attractive. The text pages, in French and german, are somewhat darkened to the edges. There is a Picasso title page which is either stuck neatly to the edge of he colophon page or is in a French fold. We are unsure which, but there is not text within the pages. Introduction by Jean Cocteau. After the introductory pages are 62 full page photographs on glossy photographic paper. These in excellent condition. All in all, a decent copy. This edition published for the members of the Deutscher Bucherbund. First edition thus. 325 x 245 mm (12¾ x 9¾ inches).

. Un bel exemplaire de cet élégant livre de photos. Plaques cartonnées illustrées d'une illustration de Picasso. Elles sont un peu assombries et le dos est légèrement fendu, mais elles restent attrayantes. Les pages de texte, en français et en allemand, sont quelque peu assombries sur les bords. Il y a une page de titre de Picasso qui est soit collée proprement au bord de la page de colophon, soit dans un pli français. Nous ne savons pas laquelle, mais il n'y a pas de texte dans les pages. Introduction de Jean Cocteau. Après les pages d'introduction se trouvent 62 photographies pleine page sur papier photographique brillant. Celles-ci sont en excellent état. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bon exemplaire. Cette édition a été publiée pour les membres du Deutscher Bucherbund. Première édition donc. 325 x 245 mm

Essen: Industriedruck AG, 1957. Cream softback covers. With a b/w frontis portrait of Burchartz, and 14 charming tipped-in samples of design - some in colour. Text in German. Inserted is a printed card which is signed in ink by Hermann Schardt. The card explains that the book is a gift to celebrate Max Burchartz's 70th birthday. The covers are slightly soiled and darkened in some areas. There is some wear to the head of the spine, and a taped reference number to the tail of the spine. Unpaginated. 295 x 170 mm (11½ x 6¾ inches).
Max Burchartz was a well-known professor of typography at the famous art academy. Burchartz is considered one of the most important designers of the modern age; among other things, he created the design of the modern door handle. With 3 short texts by H. Schard, J. Lampe and J. Gebser.
