The Percy Society was a short lived British text publication society. It was founded in 1840 and collapsed in 1852. The Society was a scholarly collective, aimed at publishing limited-edition books of rare poems and songs. The president was Lady Braybrooke, and the twelve founding members of the committee included John Payne Collier, Thomas Crofton Croker, Thomas Wright, James Orchard Halliwell (treasurer), Charles Mackay, Edward Francis Rimbault (secretary) and William Chappell. Later members included William Sandys, and Robert Bell.

London: Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd, 1913. First edition. A poetry anthology edited by Tynan and illustrated by C. M. Watts. Tynan was ideally placed to compile such an anthology, she had been a close associate of W. B. Yeats from the time they first met in June 1885 until around the time of her marriage in 1893, and was a central figure in Dublin literary circles. This would appear to be a deluxe edition of the anthology. Sidgwick & Jackson, like many Edwardian publishers, sometimes produced a small run in superior binding for the gift trade or for presentation copies, using a deeper cloth and gilt blocking where the standard trade edition used black. In addition to poems by William Butler Yeats, A.E., James Stephens etc. this work saw the first appearance of a James Joyce work in an anthology with three poems. ("Strings in the Earth and Air," "At that hour," and "I hear an Army.") The cloth has some bumping to the edges, and bleaching for the colour to the edge and to the rear panel. Slight rubbing to the gilt. Inside, the work is mainly clean and tidy, with a little darkening and slight foxing to the pages. The double title page is printed on high quality art paper and is a beautiful colour Celtic knot work panel. The panel is repeated uncoloured as a surround to each page. xxvi, 160 pages. 24cm x 17cm.

The boards are slightly loose, and the binding a little cracked to the hinges, but still holding well. A little rubbing to the spine and edges, with some loss, but otherwise in clean condition. Marbled page edges. Internally clean and tidy with a little foxing only. Frere's complete works were published in 1871, with a memoir by his nephews W.E. and Sir Henry Bartie frere. This is the second enlarged edition. John Hookham Frere (1769-1846) was an English diplomat and author. His reputation now largely rests on his translations of Aristophanes. His "prospectus and specimen", a mock Arthurian poem, was used extensively by Byron in "Don Juan." Bookplate and signature of Reginald Heber Macaulay from his Eton master Francis St John Thackeray on the occasion of his leaving Eton in 1878. Macaulay (1858-1937) was an amateur English footballer who won the FA cup for the Old Etonians in 1882 and made an appearance for England in 1881. viii, 354., viii, 426., 436. pages. 22cm x 14cm.

A touch of edgewear with some tiny closed tears. Internally clean and tidy with slight darkening to the page edges. Vents constitutes the second major part of Perse's American output (after his Exile cycle). This is one of Perse's most significant poems. It was initially published only in a deluxe, large format, large print edition, a limited and entirely numbered print run. Saint-John Perse was the pen name of Alexis Leger (1887–1975). He had parallel lives as a poet and as a diplomat. Dismissed from service in France during the war for his Anti-Nazi views, he went into exile in America, returning after the war. To the Anglo Saxons, he is often best known as the author of Anabasis, which T.S. Eliot translated in 1924. His poetry is often taught as a bridge between late Symbolism and the more expansive, world-embracing modernism of figures like Eliot and Whitman. Unpaginated. 32.5cm x 25cm. Première édition. France: S.P, 2015. An original portrait of William S. Burroughs on cardboard. The artist has used spray paint and stencil to produce a striking image of Burroughs. The artist has torn away some of the layers of card, to reveal unpainted card and elements of the corrugated card. To these, is stamped "Peule la poésie est révolutionnaire" (Only poetry is revolutionary). An also in black ink by hand the title, date and artists name. Blank to the verso (with just a few spots of the green ink. 30cm x 24cm. An attractive and unusual portrait.
