Paris: Gaume Freres et J. Duprey, 1864. Original green paper covers, with owner's name to the top of the front cover. Has the "Timbre Imperial Seine" and 5 cent. tax paid stamp to the title page. Overall in good condition. There is a little marking to the green covers, and rubbing to the paper spine, with a little loss. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticising more Liberal Catholics of the time. Couvertures originales en papier vert, avec le nom du propriétaire en haut de la couverture avant. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. Timbre acquitté sur la page de titre. Globalement en bon état. Il y a une petite marque sur les couvertures vertes, et des frottements sur le dos du papier, avec un petit manque. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé. Veuillot était un ultramontain français (celui qui place l'autorité du pape au-dessus de toute autorité séculière dans tous les domaines) et a beaucoup écrit en faveur de la papauté, et en particulier en critiquant les catholiques libéraux de l'époque. 63 [ii] pp.

Paris: Charles Douniol, 1860. Yellow covers. Pamphlet containing a monograph in French dealing with the Pope and Liberty. Has the Imperial Timbre duty paid stamp to several pages. The covers and the first couple of pages are quite soiled with what seems to be a combination of foxing and spider damage! The rest of the pamphlet has light foxing to it. Overall a not very good condition, but still readable work. 32 pp. Couvertures jaunes. Brochure contenant une monographie en français traitant du Pape et de la Liberté. A le timbre Impérial Timbre acquitté sur plusieurs pages. Les couvertures et les deux premières pages sont assez sales avec ce qui semble être une combinaison de rousseurs et de dégâts d'araignée ! Le reste de la brochure a de légères rousseurs. Dans l'ensemble, un travail pas très bon état, mais toujours lisible. 32 pages. 32 pp.

Rouen: Chez Laurent Dumesnil, 1776. First edition. Contemporary quarter leather with imitation calf boards. The spine has panels with black labels. Gilt titles. The work is complete in two parts, with two title pages. Title woodcuts and initial and final woodcuts for chapters. Chanoine is the French for Canon - a senior clerical title. Clemence was the Canon at Rouen. Overall in good condition. The boards are clean and tidy, with minimal bumping. The leather is sound, with a little rubbing only. There is slight cracking to the surface of the labels, but no loss. Internally mainly excellent. The end papers are slightly darkened and have a recent owner's signature to the front end paper. The half title page to the second volume has a two inch closed tear to the bottom edge. The rest of the book is very bright and tidy. xv, [i], 1-382. [iv], 1-215, [i]. pp. Deux tomes en un volume. Quartier contemporain en cuir avec planches en imitation veau. Le dos a des panneaux avec des étiquettes noires. Titres dorés. L'ouvrage est complet en deux parties, avec deux pages de titre. Gravures sur bois de titre et gravures sur bois initiales et finales pour les chapitres. Clémence était chanoine à Rouen. Globalement en bon état. Les planches sont propres et bien rangées, avec un minimum de chocs. Le cuir est sain, avec seulement quelques frottements. Il y a de légères fissures à la surface des étiquettes, mais aucune perte. En interne principalement excellent. Les pages de garde sont légèrement noircies et portent une signature récente du propriétaire sur la page de garde. La page de faux-titre du deuxième volume a une déchirure fermée de deux pouces sur le bord inférieur. Le reste du livre est très clair et bien rangé. xv, [i], 1-382. [iv], 1-215, [i]. pp.

Has the "Timbre Imperial Seine" and 5 cent. tax paid stamp to the verso of the half-title page. Also includes a 2 leaf folded advertisement for "Histoire de France" by the same author. A very nice copy. the green wrappers are clean and tidy, with just a touch of foxing. Inside, clean and tidy throughout. Laurentie was a French writer and educationalist. He was a staunch monarchist, and much of his work was produced in defence of religion. Livret original couvert de papier vert olive. Nom du propriétaire en tête de la couverture. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. timbre fiscal au verso de la page de faux-titre. Comprend également une publicité pliée à 2 feuillets pour « Histoire de France » du même auteur. Un très bel exemplaire. les emballages verts sont propres et bien rangés, avec juste une touche de rousseur. A l'intérieur, propre et bien rangé partout. Laurentie était une écrivaine et pédagogue française. Il était un monarchiste convaincu, et une grande partie de son travail a été réalisée pour la défense de la religion. 32pp (+iv pp).

France: N/A, 1700. Contemporary panelled calf. A 386 page manuscript, outlining Roman Catholic faith concerning the Mass. With contents to rear. Probably French. Undated but Circa 1700. Completed in a neat cursive script, entirely in Latin. The binding has chips with considerable loss to the spine. However the boards are firm and holding. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with minimal darkening to the pages. Still perfectly legible. 190 by 120mm (7½ by 4¾ inches). Veau lambrissé contemporain. Un manuscrit de 386 pages, décrivant la foi catholique romaine concernant la messe. Avec le contenu à l'arrière. Probablement français. Sans date mais vers 1700. Terminé dans une écriture cursive soignée, entièrement en latin. La reliure a des éclats avec une perte considérable au dos. Cependant les planches sont fermes et tiennent. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé, avec un assombrissement minimal des pages. Toujours parfaitement lisible. 190 par 120 mm

London: Burns and Oates, 1910. First edition. Hardback. Pale brown cloth covers with gilt titles. Book plate of Syon Abbey to the inside front board. Three black and white illustrated plates. Rough cut page edges. There is a touch of fading to the cloth and a very pale cup ring to the front board. Slight bowing to the boards only. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with very slight foxing to the end papers. [vi], 78 pp. + plates

There is an anonymous biographical memoir of Hingston at the beginning of the book, written in a rather florid, late Victorian style. It is recorded here that she died in a tragic boating accident in 1907. In fact, her death was the result of a suicide pact, agreed with her fiancee Shirley Davidson, the son of Sir Charles Peers Davidson, Chief Justice of the Quebec Supreme Court. He refused to allow the marriage, as Aileen was a Roman Catholic. Ironically, in 1912, another son, Thornton Davidson - Shirley's older brother, was to die on the Titanic.

Fulignio: Antonio Marriotti, 1682. First edition. Original publishers paper covered boards. Recent buckram spine. Title on a paper label to the spine. The book contains forty sermons by Mattioli. There are numerous woodcut vignettes, historiated capitals and other designs. Title (end papers look newer, although still quite old), dedication, imprimatur, author note, subject index, twenty sermons, biblical index, index of notable things, printer's register. NB - the text is entirely in Italian. The publisher's paper boards have a few minor stains to them. The spine is new, and is in "as new" condition. The end papers (and inside board lining) looks newer, but has a watermark of a bird on three mountains. I have traced this back to three items, all bound in Italy between 1650 and 1690 - so they probably are original. The title page has some darkening / foxing to it, the rest of the pages have a touch of darkening / marking. The binding has slightly cracked to register +, but is still holding well. A couple of the pages have closed tears, where they have strained to the binding, and the rear end paper has a loss of about 1 inch square. Otherwise sound. There is only one copy recorded at Copac (BL). There are a small number held in Italy. At the time of writing this, there are no other copies available, and none recently sold. There is a digitised copy of part of a first edition (up to p 184) (held at the Bavarian State Library). This has an ornate additional page (in the style of a title). I believe this is a later large bookplate. There are two reasons for this. Although the digitisation makes it hard to certain, this looks like a steel engraving, it is certainly in a different style to any of the woodcuts. Additionally, my copy, which is complete, has its complete register, and so is not lacking any pages. Première édition. Plats d'édition originaux recouverts de papier. Dos récent en percaline. Titre sur une étiquette papier au dos. Le livre contient quarante sermons de Mattioli. Il existe de nombreuses vignettes gravées sur bois, des chapiteaux historiés et d'autres dessins. Titre (les pages paraissent plus récentes, quoique encore assez anciennes), dédicace, imprimatur, note de l'auteur, index des sujets, vingt sermons, index biblique, index des choses notables, registre de l'imprimeur. NB - le texte est entièrement en italien. Les cartons de l'éditeur présentent quelques taches mineures. Le dos est neuf et est dans un état "comme neuf". Les papiers de garde (et la doublure intérieure du carton) ont l'air plus récents, mais ont un filigrane d'un oiseau sur trois montagnes. J'ai retracé cela jusqu'à trois objets, tous reliés en Italie entre 1650 et 1690 - ils sont donc probablement originaux. La page de titre présente des assombrissements / rousseurs, le reste des pages a une touche d'assombrissement / marquage. La reliure s'est légèrement craquelée au registre +, mais tient toujours bien. Quelques pages ont des déchirures fermées, où elles ont tendu à la reliure, et le papier de fin arrière a une perte d'environ 1 pouce carré. Sinon le son. Il n'y a qu'un seul exemplaire enregistré chez Copac (BL). Il y en a un petit nombre détenu en Italie. Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, il n'y a pas d'autres exemplaires disponibles et aucun n'a été vendu récemment. Il existe une copie numérisée d'une partie d'une première édition (jusqu'à la p 184) (conservée à la Bibliothèque d'État de Bavière). Cela a une page supplémentaire ornée (dans le style d'un titre). Je crois qu'il s'agit d'un grand ex-libris ultérieur. Il y a deux raisons à cela. Bien que la numérisation rende difficile à certains, cela ressemble à une gravure sur acier, c'est certainement dans un style différent de l'une des gravures sur bois. De plus, mon exemplaire, qui est complet, a son registre complet et ne manque donc pas de pages. [xvi], 1-512, i-xxvii pp.
