Geneva / Geneve: N/A, 1820. Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4¼ by 3¼ inches).

Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist.

Schenker (1760-1848) était avant tout un graveur, né à Genève, a travaillé à Paris. Elève de Saint-Ours et de Macret, il étudie la taille-douce. Il grave avec Gâtine les illustrations de la série 'Le Bon Genre' éditée par La Mésangère. Il était aussi manifestement un aquarelliste de talent.

The description for this character in the novel reads: This evening there arrived from Gratz the grave, dark-faced son of the picture-cleaner, with a horse and cart laden with two large packing cases, having many pictures in each. Lithographie originale d'un homme barbu dans un chapeau d'hiver. Fait partie d'une série d'œuvres basées sur Carmilla, le roman gothique de l'écrivain irlandais Sheridan Le Fanu. Signé au crayon. Numéroté 29 / 297 exemplaires. Authentifié par le propre tampon sec de l'artiste (une tête de chat). Sur vélin. Très bon état car l'oeuvre n'a jamais été encadrée. La description de ce personnage dans le roman se lit comme suit : Ce soir arriva de Gratz le fils grave et sombre du nettoyeur de tableaux, avec un cheval et une charrette chargés de deux grandes caisses d'emballage, contenant chacune de nombreuses images.

One of 50 copies numbered from 8 to 57, this is number 24. Silk covering the book has become detached in some areas, and has some stains. Internally the book very good, except for one plate which has stains to it. Each plate is additionally signed in the margin by Woda. Première édition. Petit quarto oblong. 1890. An attractive photograph album containing 81 albumen and silver gelatin photographs dating from circa 1890. These include a number of Alpine and Mont Blanc photographs (including several of climbers). Multiple landscape photographs of France and Switzerland, including bridges, aqueducts etc. A number of photographs of Lourdes, showing the Basilica; (this has helped in the dating, as it does not include the two towers, which were finished in 1907). London: Elliott & Fry. Albumen image. Profile of Ruskin. Although undated, the image would seem to be Circa 1870. Printed on mount, recto: "John Ruskin M.A., L.L.D. // Elliott & Fry Copyright 55 Baker St London W." Printed to Verso: "Elliott & Fry // Photographers // 55 Baker St, London // W." To the bottom of the verso is printed "Marion, imp Paris" and embossed "Marion & Co. London."It is also printed "No." but no number is written. The photograph was taken in 1867 when Ruskin was 48. The image is a little faded, but clearly still a portrait of Ruskin! The verso is clean. Overall in excellent condition. 165 x 110 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches).

The same image is lodged with the National Portrait Gallery. Here it does not have Ruskin's name (but does have the photographer's details). This is catalogued as a carte-de-visite, and dated 1867. Presumably the photographer issued the photograph of Ruskin shortly afterwards. This is referenced NPG Ax39887. The Albumen Process was developed in 1847, and was the first commercially exploitable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative. It was the dominant form of photographic positive until the turn of the century.

Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité or Madame de Genlis (25 January 1746 – 31 December 1830) was a French writer of the late 18th and early 19th century, best known for her novels and theories on children's education. her devotion to religion, morality, and feminine submission, strangely contrasts with her own life and her art. Signed limited edition (one of 500) Original hardback. 26 colour serigraph plates, 2 monochrome illustrations and original pictorial boards by WILLEM, the pseudonym for Bernard Willem Haltrop. Beautiful condition with no flaws inside or out. Haltrop (born 1941) is a Dutch cartoonist, who moved to France in 1968 following a court case where he was accused of Lèse-majesté for comparing Queen Juliana to a prostitute. He continues to draw provocative cartoons. He was associated for a while with the Dutch Provo movement. 200 by 150mm (7¾ by 6 inches).

Haltrop (né en 1941) est un caricaturiste néerlandais qui s'est installé en France en 1968 à la suite d'un procès où il a été accusé de lèse-majesté pour avoir comparé la reine Juliana à une prostituée. Il continue à dessiner des caricatures provocantes. Il a été associé pendant un certain temps au mouvement néerlandais Provo. 200 x 150 mm (7¾ x 6 pouces).

New York & London: D. Van Nostrand & Sampson Low, Son & Co, 1861. Attractive first edition in original black blind stamped buckram with gilt titles to spine. The binding is quite rubbed to the front hinge with cracking to the spine edge. A little bumping. Small bookseller stamp from A. Franck in Paris to the inside paste down. Moderate foxing to the end papers, and light foxing, particularly to the edges of the rest of the book. The binding shows signs of having been re-sewn at some point to plate 17 - it would appear the block split. The repair is quite crude but only at this point and not affecting plate. Complete with all 77 engraved plates. Lovely Frontis engraving of a steam locomotive, "The Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works". Discrete library / owner's stamp to the title page shows that this belonged to the Chemins de Fer in Algeria. After the title and colophon, there is a full page railway map of Great Britain in 1858. Many of the engravings are very specific engine parts shown in full detail, others show whole locomotives. 192 pages + plates. 370 x 250 mm (14½ x 9¾ inches).
