Paris: Librairie Delagrave, 1881. A attractive copy of this first edition work of political caricature. 32 full page illustrated plates (including the title) 8 of them in colour. There is a further colour plate tipped onto the front board. The boards are clean, with a little darkening / foxing to the plate. Some rubbing with surface loss to the rear panel. If so, this was some time ago, as a small old gilt bookseller's label is on the end paper. 32pp. 260 by 390mm (10¼ by 15¼ inches).

A parody of someone who wants to be more than he is - and taking France as wanting to be more English that England. Mac-Aron indulges in horse racing, boxing, polo, horseback riding and finally hunting with amusing results.

A note on the verso says: In 1999, I met the director of this police academy again, this time in the B&B he ran with his family in Stellenbosch. A television channel had sought him out for a program on the photos that marked our time. It was not the uniform-and-stick Colonel that I found, it was the retired police general Stephanus Jacobus Malan. "This picture was taken from my South Africa story, originally published in 1978 by newspapers and magazines around the world; it became one of the symbols of apartheid. A photographer friend informed me later that someone from the South African Embassy in Paris told him that this photo did them more harm than an armed division of enemies. It's the greatest compliment a photographer can receive. Police academy. Hamanskraal, South Africa. 1978. The man whose face had become, over the years, and defiantly, an icon of apartheid, was an affable, courteous man with exquisite hospitality. What was the moral responsibility of the photographer? I had not photographed the man in 1978, but the uniform that personified the apartheid regime." From the photographer's own notes.

Special attention is paid to the innovations that marked the 1987 campaign, including the celebrated Kinnock party election broadcast, the computerisation of constituency electioneering, equal broadcasting time for the three main parties, the eruption of constituency polling, and the TV 87 campaign for tactical voting. Dust jacket has some very light rubbing, and a little darkening to inside flaps. Overall in very good, clean condition. xv, 316 pp. 235 x 160 mm (9¼ x 6¼ inches).
