1914. Mounted albumen print of a nurse in Red Cross uniform, signed "Henri Manuel Paris" in pencil in lower margin of mount. - A few small stains. With (later) annotation in ballpoint on verso "La guerre 1914-1918". The nurse is portrayed in a beatific pose. Henri Manuel (1874 – 1947) was a French photographer who served as the official photographer of the French government from 1914 to 1944. 212 by 146mm (8¼ by 5¾ inches).

Original dark brown cloth, with gilt titles to spine. A little bumping and rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine, with a very small (2-3mm) closed tear to the head of the spine. No significant marks to the cloth. Foyles bookshop sticker to the inside board. Fractionally darkened to the edges, otherwise in excellent condition. Xii, 338 pages + 13 photographic plates. (complete). A very nice copy. Pohl has been described as the Father of Solid State Physics, 220 by 160mm (8¾ by 6¼ inches).

A poem of Poland's history from the earliest known beginnings to the time of writing (the second world war). Published at perhaps the darkest point of the war, the author tries to hold on to the belief that good will triumph. Text in English. 94 pages.
The dust wrapper (now protected in clear removable acetate) has a small chip to the bottom edge of the spine, and a slight nicking elsewhere - otherwise clean and tidy.
