The book bears the owner's signature of T.J. Powell, Brecon. This would seem to be the Welsh composer and conductor Thomas James Powell. A little rubbing to the binding, which has been restored. Book is in very good, clean condition, with a touch of foxing to the initial pages.

Although translated from the French, this was the first Edition. A classic analysis of Hindu society. Jean-Antoine Dubois, 1765-1848, French catholic missionary, sailed in 1792 to India where he spent twenty-seven years, serving first in Pondichery, then at Mysore and Mangalore.

Cloth box is a little grubby. Internally in very good condition, with just small split starting to blank covering paper on plates section. Professor Louis Lebeer, was curator of printmaking at the universities of Ghent and Liège. 340 x 265 mm (13½ x 10½ inches). Edition originale, limitée à 210 exemplaires numérotés - il s'agit du n° 4. Dublin: His Majesty's Stationary Office, by Alexander Thom & Co: 1902. This work, two volumes bound as one, contains both the report, presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty, and the evidence behind the report. This latter is much scarcer, and contains transcripts of interviews and fascinating period information about Life in the Dublin Police at the turn of the Nineteenth to Twentieth Centuries. The reports have been bound in a recent blue buckram, with gilt titles. A fascinating piece of history concerning the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). Report and recommendations from the committee on a claim by the Dublin Metropolitan Police to be placed upon the same footing as regards pay, allowances, &c. as the London Metropolitan Police. Contains extensive comparative information and lists showing differences between the two forces in relation to salaries, allowances, pensions, &c. Good condition. Some staining to front board. Port Sunlight: Lever Brothers Limited, c. 1910. Loose leaf, in full colour, that appears to have formerly been tipped into another publication. Illustration of a man in a bath holding a bar of Lifebuoy soap with a box of soaps on the floor and a portrait of the Lifebuoy fisherman on the wall. Text reads "LIFEBUOY SOAP. Specially prepared for HANDS & BATH. Gives you that Healthy Feeling". Verso has the advertising text for Lifebuoy. Very good condition and still bright coloured, as it was kept enclosed in a book or magazine for most of its time. Clean and without creases etc. 160 x 115 mm (6¼ x 4½ inches).

Lever Brothers and other firms often commissioned many (now important) artists to produce their advertising for them. Will Owen (1869 – 1957) was an English book illustrator, cartoonist, caricaturist and a commercial and poster artist, possibly best known for his iconic images of the Bisto Kids, Bovril, Lux and Lifebuoy.

Loved for having a generous nature, and rather eccentric personality, he was once tipped as possible British Prime Minister, but he left politics to work in education. Anonymous author & printer. 1649 Conforms to OCLC 70699080. 468 pages. Seems to be first edition but not clear. Claude Saumaise (Salmasius) was a French Humanist (1596-1653). This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive French bookplate to the inside board. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

Holland: L.C.G. Malmberg. First edition. Two volumes (of three) produced. Volume I published in 1909, Volume II in 1910. Each complete in themselves for the period that they cover. Text entirely in Latin. Soft grey paper covers. Pages largely uncut. A very nice copy of these two books. The pale grey paper covers are slightly darkened, and have light foxing spots, but overall in clean and tidy shape. Internally clean throughout. These books were a gift to the Bridgettine House of Syon Abbey from the Rev. Benedict Williamson, a Roman Catholic priest who was a keen supporter of the Bridgettine order and the author of a history of the order. There is a presentation inscription to the front of each volume.

Dartford: J. & E. Hall, 1954. An attractive copy of this 62 page booklet outlining the history and apprenticeship opportunities at J. & E. Hall in Dartford. Soft cover with photograph tipped onto front cover. Black and white photographs throughout and a colour folding diagram of the apprenticeship scheme to the rear. Owner's signature to title page. Full of information about the company, and engineering generally. A leaflet giving key facts and a humorously detailed set of directions to their offices is loosely inserted. Founded in 1785, the firm originally built steam engines, and developed into offering escalators, lifts and refrigerated units for ships. In 1954 they had provided 65% of the world's units according to Lloyd's register, and 93% of British registered ships had a Hall refrigerated unit installed. The firm is still operating today. At the brochure states, "Most boys are born with a natural instinct for engineering. " 235 by 160mm (9¼ by 6¼ inches).

Lyon: Amable Leroy, 1804. A very nice copy of this New Edition. Full leather binding with red labels and gilt titles. With engraved folding plate of the Solar System. Binding in immaculate condition. Plate in very good, clean condition, with minor edgewear. Text is in very good, clean condition with a touch of darkening and edgewear. Attractive woodcut vignettes to the front of each section. Lovely edition of Enlightenment essayist Bernard Le Bouvier de Fontenelle's successful popularisation of the Copernican system plus his imaginary dialogues with dead people. xii, 1-394 pp. 190 by 120mm (7½ by 4¾ inches).
