London: for Peter Parker, 1676. Folio. Original full leather binding. Seven raised bands, with gilt ornamentation and label to spine. A little bumping and rubbing with some splitting to the spine edge. Armorial plate to the inside front board. Various inscriptions (see notes below). Frontis engraving. There is a little nicking to the edge of the engraving. Title in red and black. Closed tear to the title page. [viii], 1-576. pages. Most of the book is clean and tidy, but with a little marking to the last few pages. Overall a decent copy. A gift and legacy of the Earls of Lindsay. An old inked inscription to verso of the Frontis states "The legacy of King Charles the 1st to Montague Earl of Lindsey. L. M. Bertie." There is another copy of Bertie's signature on the book dated 1732. This would appear to be Capt. Lord Montagu Bertie (died 1753). He was the great grandson of the Earl referred to. (Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey). The term "legacy" here cannot be taken literally, and is more likely to refer to the statement to the title. Both the King and the Earl were dead by the time of publication of the book.
A large armorial plate to the inside front board states "The Hon. James Bertie esq. of Westminster. Second son to James late Earl of Abingdon 1702." These were the son and grandson of Montague the second earl
A further inscription to the inside front board states "The gift of Montague Earl of Abingdon to Charles Bertie Rector of Uffington." Charles another of the sons of the second earl (and brother of James whose bookplate is here) – so the book would appear to have moved around the family.
The important relative here is Montagu (or Montague) Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsay. He was a Royalist, courtier, Member of Parliament and Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. He fought for Charles in the Civil War and was wounded at Naseby. He remained at the side of the King through the war, his surrender, imprisonment and execution.

Amsterdam: [ ], 1764. The most beautiful of the reproductions of the «des fermiers généraux» edition. (This was first issued in 1762). The illustration includes a portrait of La Fontaine as the frontispiece of the first volume, 65 vignettes including 1 on each of the engraved titles, 2 full page vignettes, and 2 woodcut vignettes to the contents page. And of course the 80 plates engraved by Charles Boily from Eisen's compositions. Most of the vignettes are after Choffard. The portrait of La Fontaine is engraved by Macret after Ficquet.
Half calf. This has been recently restored, with the original leather sympathetically laid onto a new spine. Mottled boards. Minimal rubbing. Internally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening only. A few minor marks and edgewear to the pages, but nothing to detract from the enjoyment of this copy. The plates are good impressions with firm strikes.

Some first issue points: vignette title with Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm; p.XV line 2 no quotation marks around 'the Party'; p.14 ten lines from bottom 'aint' with no apostrophe; p.26 line 11 'fidgetty'; p.284 lines 5 and 6 from bottom 'Delight'; p.324 last line 'Captain' correctly spelled; and p.582 last line with no full stop.

Contains Frontis, two engraved title pages (one in English), and 79 further plates (so 80 plates and complete. Pages are mainly in good, clean condition, with a little foxing to some pages and plates. Slight cracking to one gather, but holding well. Many of the engraved plates are clearly English in origin, and are made by artists including Harvey & Blanchard; Geoffrey; Laisne; Gouttiere; Gautier etc.
Interesting volume; besides giving a series of pictures illustrating the various plays, it contains a chapter on the Portraits of Shakespeare, the Contemporaries of Shakespeare, the Commentators of Shakespeare, and the celebrated Actors who have played in Shakespearian roles (occupying 32 pp. in all). Each page has a border containing a large number of thumb-nail sketches of Shakespearean scenes. Leipzig: Ernst Fleischer, 1847. A lovely copy of this work, complete with 101 engraved plates, including Frontis. (Complete). Lovely contemporary half leather binding with green leather to spine and gilt decoration. A little rubbing and edgewear to the spine. Black cloth to boards. There is light to moderate foxing throughout the book. The work contains: Frontis. Title page (In English - dated 1849 and stating that this issue is for the American Market); (1) Hamlet decorated title & plates (16); Macbeth (12); Romeo & Juliet (12); King Lear (12); The Tempest (12); Othello (12); The Merry Wives of Windsor (12); Henry IV part I & II (12). There is then a title page in German and a Title in English (both dated 1847). Then XCV pages in two columns giving the explanation of the plates in both English and German. The preface to the explanation, states that this Complete edition, has used the plate "Shakspeare's Apotheosis" as a Frontis. This was previously Plate one to each of the separate parts. As a result, the plates are numbered starting with plate 2 for each work. This copy is clearly the 1847 first complete edition, with an additional English title for the American market.

The spine has gone, and the front and rear boards are detached from the text block. The title page and first gather are also detached. The leather boards have been held onto the book by tape at some point, and the outlines of this can be seen to the boards. Moderate foxing throughout. Sold as a complete copy of the index, in need of a re-bind. 260 x 205 mm (10¼ x 8 inches). Ce tome d'index forme le tome 4 des ouvrages de Lucien publiés entre 1743 et 1746. Paris: Chez Pillet Aine, 1822. A two volume work. Each is half leather, with marbled boards and burgundy labels to the spines. Mixed editions. Volume one is the fourth edition from 1822. Volume two is the second edition of 1821. Each volume has the bookplate of Compton Mackenzie to the inside front board. Owner's inscription to the front end paper of each volume (B. Lumley). Each volume has an engraved frontis and there is a fold out map to volume one. Numerous vignettes throughout the works. Overall, the condition of these works is good. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the boards and leather - but no splitting or breaking. Two (of four) labels have come away from the spines. Internally, the books are clean and tidy with a touch of darkening to the page edges. A note with the books states that they were acquired from the library that Mackenzie left on Jethou, a small island in the Channel Islands, occupied by one tenant - which was Mackenzie from 1920-23 when he moved to Barra in the Hebrides. He was influential in formulating the Law of Demand with Gregory King, and was the first to write about the Balance of Trade. His son was Henry Molins Davenant. This is the prospectus and one volume from a set of 37 volumes comprising all of Shakespeare's plays, each illustrated by a different artist. The paper covered boards reproduced a period wall painting design from John Davenant's house.
