Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration.
Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition.
Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages 36 plates. Paris: Édition du Mercure de France, 1911. A very nice copy of this limited edition. One of 1000 numbered copies on Velin D'Arches paper. Soft covers are a little darkened, but sound and overall in very good shape. Signed by the artist Rouveyre to the half title page. The original name of the dedication has been cut out, leaving an area of loss to the front end paper. With 8 full page illustrations by Rouveyre. The final pages are beautifully presented in pure Art Nouveau typeset and design with cul-de-lampes and vignettes. A lovely piece of work. Printed entirely from woodcuts by Rouveyre, destroyed after printing. [1-24], XXV-XXXVI pp. Text in French. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches). Très bel exemplaire de cette édition limitée. Un des 1000 exemplaires numérotés sur papier Velin D'Arches. Les couvertures souples sont un peu assombries, mais saines et globalement en très bon état. To all good children, greeting. In McLoughlin Bros catalogue entitled List of Toy Books, published in 1867, two versions are mentioned. Like this one in yellow covers and address for McLoughlin Bros at 30 Beekman St. on front, or another in pink covers with just New York as the publisher's address. Back cover with advertisement for Games for Children. Comprises 48 unnumbered pages, with b/w illustrations. A little handled, and creased to covers, and age toned throughout. Overall, a decent copy. It is not clear whether these are 32 original ink drawings in the style of Punch and Judy by one H. Abbot, or if they are engravings culled from other sources and here gathered together. Perhaps it is a combination of the two. There are 15 numbered illustrations, with a title to each. This is followed by a further 7 illustrations on diverse subjects. Then comes "Attitudes for Exits from the Stage" with 8 small illustrations with quotations(seemingly from Shakespeare). Finally are three further illustrations. Overall, we sell this as a nice gathering (and hence unique collection) of mid-Nineteenth century engravings.
70 by 120mm (2¾ by 4¾ inches). The small pocket book is clean and tidy, with a little rubbing to the edges. Overall a nice item. Slight darkening / foxing throughout.

Philadelphia: Rosenbach Museum & Library, 1999. First edition. Black soft back with blue dust jacket. Front cover overlaid with an illustration. The exhibition at the Rosenbach featured a copy of Manjiro's own lavishly illustrated manuscript account of his adventures, and this companion book includes full-page colour reproductions the manuscript. In very good / fine condition. 116 pages. 260 x 185 mm (10¼ x 7¼ inches).

In 1843 (at just 16 years old) Nakahama Manjirō became the first Japanese person to live in the United States. Two years earlier, at the tender age of 14, he had been rescued after a shipwreck by the crew of the 'John Howland', an American whale ship from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Having mastered English, sailing the world on whaling ships for several years, and trying his hand at gold mining, Manjirō later risked his life to go back to Japan in an attempt to make his homeland more "hospitable."
After much suspicion, and many interrogations, he was later to become a shōgun's samurai, a teacher of English and American culture, and his translation of Nathaniel Bowditch's 'The New American Practical Navigator' constituted the introduction of modern scientific navigation methods to Japan. His life story is certainly a fascinating one, and number of Manjirō's students would go on to play seminal roles in the Meiji-era modernisation of Japan.

London: James Hagger, 1862. First edition. Two volumes bound as one. Text volume is Part 1. In part II are 96 fine embossed plates of gold and silver coins, each with a leaf of descriptive text. Hardback in cloth, ex-library copy with usual marks and small security stamps. Boards are a little rubbed, and cloth has been repaired where there was a split on the spine. Inside, some age toning to beginning of Part 1, but Part 2 is very clean. Overall good. OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 809612966. 230 x 160 mm (9 x 6¼ inches).

London: Frederick Warne & Co, 1870. One of the "Warne's large picture toy books" series. Original soft covers These have been restored to the corners and backed onto similar paper. A fabric strip has been laid onto the spine. As a result, the binding is firm. A little darkening to the covers, but still presentable. The inside covers (front and rear) have been printed with the rhyming key to the work, the 8 leaves are cloth backed (gives the impression of being backed with wallpaper) and so the pages are printed to either recto or verso only. Each page is chromo-lithographed with the illustrations of the letters of the alphabet. These are a little darkened, but in sound condition. 240 x 190 mm

Wien: M. Engel & Söhne, 1898. An attractive volume of illustrated ladies in the Art Nouveau style. First Edition. Brown cloth with gilt detail, and a reproduction of the title page laid in gold to the front board. Binding has a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine but is otherwise sound. Title page and 50 illustrated leaves, with picture and text to the recto only. The pictures, which have a verse in German below each, each show a scantily clad woman in the Belle Epoque style. The flesh of each woman is colour in a soft pink. Pages are a little darkened, but overall in very nice condition, Small closed tear repaired to end paper.A few other tiny closed tears. 260 by 200mm (10¼ by 7¾ inches).

Les images, qui sont accompagnées d'un vers en allemand, montrent toutes une femme légèrement vêtue dans le style de la Belle Époque. La chair de chaque femme est colorée d'un rose tendre. Les pages sont un peu noircies, mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état, une petite déchirure fermée a été réparée sur le papier de fin. 260 x 200 mm

Within this is a matching cloth covered folder with titles in black ink to the spine. Also in excellent condition. Stiff card covers in immaculate condition. Inside are eight gathers, each comprising 4 pages. Loose in French folds These include the four beautiful linogravures by Santos commissioned for this work. One is the frontis portrait of Kafka, the other 3 are full page illustrations under tissue guards. To the first gather (which is otherwise blank) is a coloured pastel drawing by Santos, with the inscription "Pour m. et mme. Bouchet, avec amite Ant. Santos". To the rear is the colophon, which clearly states that the work includes four linogravures by Santos. Total limitation of 55 copies. Ours is one of the 40 on Rives, but with the additional original work. Also signed by Santos to the colophon. includes the original publisher's leaflet / price list. 32 pages

Brünn [Brno]: Joseph George Trassler, 1801. Volume 75 of this encyclopedia. Engraved frontis and 67 engraved plates to the rear, several folding. (So complete). This volume contains the entries from "Passion" to "Linen" and many of the plates have wonderful images of people expressing different moods in the style of Lavater. Hardback, in paper covered boards (age uncertain but likely mid 20th Century) Original label pasted to the spine. Clean and tidy. Internally clean and tidy throughout, a little creasing to the edges of the folding plates, but overall in excellent condition. Brünn, the second city of the Czech republic, was at this time, the capital of Moravia, and had a German speaking majority amongst its population. VIII, 800 pp + plates.

The Berlin doctor Johann Georg Krünitz (1728-1796), who himself designed the first 73 volumes, gave the name to and initiated the ambitious undertaking. After his death, the work was continued first by the lawyer and composer Friedrich Jakob Floerke (1759-1799), and by his brother, the botanist Heinrich Gustav Floerke (1764-1835), volume 124-225 compiled by Johann Wilhelm David Korth (1783- 1861),

Original ribbon marker. The book's cloth covering is in a good condition, with gilt stamped title to front and spine. The dust jacket is darkened at the spine and to the edges, and has some nicks. Inside clean overall but with a little darkening and the odd stain. Still an attractive volume. Silverfish damage to the first couple of pages.
