Allegedly the work of Lewis the Fourteenth (Louis XIV) the Sun King of France, but edited (and perhaps written) by the comte de Gain de Montagnac. Two volumes (complete). In the original publisher's pale blue/grey stiff card boards. contains Military memoirs, Correspondence of Lewis XIV, with Philip V., etc. Notes to the end of each volume. 18 pages of adverts (dated July 1st 1806) for recently published works. text in English. xvi, [ii], 268., 210, [ii], 16 pp. OCLC: 12425737. 230 by 150mm (9 by 6 inches). The paper covers to the spines have degraded and are no longer present. However the bindings are firm and strong. Some darkening / staining and light bumping to the boards. In James' own words "a provocative analysis of the history of relations between Mexico and the United States on all levels - diplomatic, military, economic, and social - considered in terms of Mexico's developing nationalism and America's attitudes to it". 472 pp. 220 x 150 mm (8¾ x 6 inches). Dust jacket has some light bumping and a very small nick to the top edge on the front. Inside the book is in a very good / fine condition. Freelance American journalist, Daniel James (b. 1914), covered Latin America during the Cold War years. His writings reflect two themes: 1) that the region had become a primary target for Soviet aggression against interests of the United States; and 2) that American policies had failed to reflect the importance of the region to the United States. The author of hundreds of columns, articles and at least four books on these topics, including: "Red design for the Americas: Guatemala prelude" (1954), James first went to Latin America in 1953. He described Communist activity in Guatemala and in British Guiana in articles published in that year. James continued to publish articles reflecting his favorite themes in "Harper's," "The Saturday Evening Post," and the "London Observer." Later, he prepared a study of U.S. business activities in Mexico for the United States Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (1956). From 1955 through 1967 Daniel James was a syndicated columnist for the Hearst Newspapers and SPADEA, publishing his views under the title: "Dateline Latin America." During the 1960s he published: "Cuba: the first Soviet satellite in the Americas" (1961); "Mexico and the Americas" (1963); and, "Che Guevara; A biography" (1969), the last written with the aid of diaries found when their Guevara was killed while trying to start a Communist revolution in Bolivia (1967). Subsequently, James was for four years a tourism director in Mexico City (1974-1978). After 1987 he operated the Mexico-United States Institute in Washington, D.C.

Jean-Jacques Waltz was born in Colmar in 1873. He was a French caricaturist known for his satirical work particularly depicting German tourists. This book illustrates his pro-French Alsatian feelings on Germany's annexation of the Alsace region. Hansi was imprisoned several times by the German authorities, culminating in a one-year prison sentence in 1914.

There is a further colour plate tipped onto the front board. The boards are clean, with a little darkening / foxing to the plate. Some rubbing with surface loss to the rear panel. Internally mostly clean and tidy. The title page has some darkening / dirt, and there are a few light foxing spots, but overall in very good condition. The end papers and paste downs are possibly renewed, so some restoration may have occurred. If so, this was some time ago, as a small old gilt bookseller's label is on the end paper. 32pp. 260 by 390mm (10¼ by 15¼ inches).

Magnum / Abbas Photos Association, 2020. A Magnum square print, by Abbas Attar, better known by his mononym Abbas. Abbas was an Iranian photographer known for his photojournalism. This particular image came to symbolise apartheid in South Africa to audiences across the world. It shows a white colonel from the black police academy in his uniform with his trainees behind him. The trainees are lined up behind him in rows, wearing nothing but shorts and plimsols. Each year Magnum produce a limited run of photographs in this square print format. They are limited not by number, but by the length of time they are on sale. Photo in perfect condition. 150 x 150 mm (6 x 6 inches).

A note on the verso says: In 1999, I met the director of this police academy again, this time in the B&B he ran with his family in Stellenbosch. A television channel had sought him out for a program on the photos that marked our time. It was not the uniform-and-stick Colonel that I found, it was the retired police general Stephanus Jacobus Malan. "This picture was taken from my South Africa story, originally published in 1978 by newspapers and magazines around the world; it became one of the symbols of apartheid. A photographer friend informed me later that someone from the South African Embassy in Paris told him that this photo did them more harm than an armed division of enemies. It's the greatest compliment a photographer can receive. Police academy. Hamanskraal, South Africa. 1978. The man whose face had become, over the years, and defiantly, an icon of apartheid, was an affable, courteous man with exquisite hospitality. What was the moral responsibility of the photographer? This is the Second Edition of this work, first published the previous year. The whole contains a stiff (and anonymous) hardback portfolio folder, which holds a 24 page introductory booklet, a stiff card title page and 71 colour or black and white card caricature leaves. Believed fully complete. Conforms to OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 829888778. All the elements are in good, clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the pages only. A little edge wear to the folder. The cartoons are mainly attacking the west, and the introduction acknowledges that they follow a "Common advancing front with Soviet Caricature." where the enemy is "The enemy of Peace" mainly identified with the USA. 21, [3] pp., [1], [71] pp. 295 x 210 mm (11½ x 8¼ inches).

London: Chatto & Windus, 1880. A very nice First Edition of this two volume selection of Rowlandson's work.Half red leather over red buckram boards. The leather is bright and profusely decorated in gilt. The boards are a little rubbed and have moderate marking to them. An attractive set. Armourial bookplates to the inside board of each volume. Volume two has splitting to the front hinge with some loss of end paper surface, but still holding well. Both volumes have light to moderate foxing to them. A "biographical sketch" of Rowlandson is followed by a detailed chronological study of his caricatures. There is a useful "chronological summary of subjects, social and political caricatures, engraved by or after Thomas Rowlandson" An essential addition to any Rowlandson collection. xv, 378., xi, 454 pp. 290 by 230mm (11½ by 9 inches).

Half title, title, contents, biography of author, introduction and text. To the end there is a leaf of adverts on the subject of slavery from Phillips. In very nice condition. The quarter calf is clean and tidy, with just a touch of handling. The edges of the marbled boards are slightly rubbed, but overall in very good clean condition. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of foxing to the pages.
An important early American publication against the slave trade. Benezet (1713-1784) was born in Picardy, France. His family moved to London following the edict of Nantz, which was against Protestants in France. The family moved to Philadelphia in 1731, and shortly after he converted to Quakerism. He is described in the Library Company Afro- Americana catalogue (Item 44) as "the colonial anchor-man of the Anglo- American anti-slavery axis." Benezet worked ceaselessly to have slavery abolished by the colonial legislatures, and corresponded with Granville Sharp, one of the most important English abolitionists. 131 + advert leaf pp. Nouvelle édition (deuxième édition britannique).
