This page appeared in La Caricature, morale, politique et littéraire - a satirical weekly that was distributed in Paris between 1830 and 1843. It was often critical of King Louis-Phillipe (he was typically depicted as a pear), so this was a more positive image! The print is on cloth like paper, aged, and has slight creases to page edges. 250 x 205 mm (9¾ x 8 inches).

    Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199) from 'Mirror of brave military guards in Kamakura' (Kamakura Buei Yoshi Kagami)

    Edo: Fujiokaya Keijiro, 1844. Original woodblock print on mulberry paper. This is the centre panel from the colour woodblock triptych entitled 'Kamakura Buei Yoshi Kagami'. Minamoto no Yoritomo was the founder and the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate of Japan, ruling from 1192 until 1199. There was a film made in 1945 about his relationship with his brothers entitled Tora no O o Fumu Otokotachi: The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail. In this print he is actually depicted with his famous tiger's tail! The other panels are not with this. It has rough edges and is delicate, with signs of reinforcement on the verso. 360 x 240 mm (14¼ x 9½ inches).

Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.

The dandy wearing only a fig leaf, also sports a pink umbrella or parasol and shoes. Of course he also has a hat! Attractive sheet, with a little darkening / foxing to the pages edges. Some tape reinforcement to the rear of the sheet (possibly where originally bound in to the series). Would still be attractive…

Il s'agit d'une collection de 12 planches lithographiées, chacune présentant une caricature principale et trois secondaires. Notre exemplaire est colorié à la main (nous avons vu un ou deux exemplaires colorés disponibles, et il semblerait que cette série ait été proposée en édition bon marché (non colorée) ou de luxe (colorée). Le dandy, qui ne porte qu'une feuille de vigne, arbore également un parapluie ou une ombrelle rose et des chaussures. Bien sûr, il a aussi un chapeau ! Feuille attrayante, avec un peu de noircissement / rousseur sur les bords des pages. Quelques renforts de ruban adhésif au verso de la feuille (peut-être à l'endroit où elle a été reliée à l'origine à la série). L'encadrer serait encore intéressant. Au pied de la planche : "Imp. Aubert et Cie." 320 x 245 mm (12½ x 9¾ pouces).     London: Henry Graves & Co, 1907. Printed by A. Salmon of Paris. The "The Cries of London" has been a recurring theme in English print making for over three centuries. The series of thirteen paintings by Wheatley were amongst the most popular. Originally published as print 10 in the series, St Paul's can be been in the background. Engraved by Thomas G. Appleton. Signed in pencil by Appleton to the bottom right. The impressed area is 450 x 360 mm (17¾ x 14¼ inches).

    Condition: Overall this is in lovely condition. The image is clean and bright. There is a touch of light foxing to the cream paper surrounding the print (but not the print itself).

    Peter Grahame (1836 - 1921) was a Scottish artist who trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder. His landscapes were influenced by the paintings of Horatio McCulloch, and the poetry of Sir Walter Scott. He enjoyed great success at the Royal Scottish Academy, and at the Royal Academy, London.

The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Bonne impression propre sur un papier vergé épais et propre. Le papier contient un filigrane de trois croissants de lune. Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.

La reliure présente une perte à un coin, ainsi qu'une perte de tissu en surface au dos. L'illustration est un peu plus foncée. A l'intérieur, les 32 feuilles colorées à la main sont en très bon état. Il y a un petit assombrissement sur la feuille de titre, et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles, mais l'ensemble est en très bon état. The image is sized 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches). It is held behind passe partout and in an aluminium glazed Barth frame. The item is sold in the frame. Total size: 335 by 300 mm (13¼ by 11¾ inches). Beautiful condition. Frame is also in excellent condition. Kees Salentijn was born in 1947, and attended the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam with O.B. Kat as his mentor.
