1833: Chez Aubert. Lithograph by de Becquet, showing the King sitting at his desk reading a 'plan de Paris', while dogs under the desk sniff at his feet. This page appeared in La Caricature, morale, politique et littéraire - a satirical weekly that was distributed in Paris between 1830 and 1843. It was often critical of King Louis-Phillipe (he was typically depicted as a pear), so this was a more positive image! The print is on cloth like paper, aged, and has slight creases to page edges. 250 x 205 mm (9¾ x 8 inches).

Chez Martinet, 1815. A lovely hand coloured engraving taken from the Arts, Metiers et Cris de Paris. This contained 60 hand-coloured engraved plates. Here we offer #14, which shows a your umbrella seller, together with a young couple in the background with their newly purchased umbrella. Very nice hand colouring. The sheet is a little darkened and marked to the edges. Still an attractive copy of a scarce item. embossed area 18cm x 10cm. The sheet is 22.5cm x 13.5cm. First edition.

Nous proposons ici la planche n°14, qui représente un vendeur de parapluies, ainsi qu'un jeune couple à l'arrière-plan avec son parapluie nouvellement acheté. Très belle mise en couleur à la main. La feuille est un peu assombrie et marquée sur les bords. Il s'agit toujours d'un exemplaire attrayant d'un article rare. La surface gaufrée est de 18 cm x 10 cm. La feuille mesure 22,5 cm x 13,5 cm.

Signed lower right, and numbered 30/132 in lower left, all in pencil. Perfect for framing. With one very light water mark to the lower right (not affecting the engraving). A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition.

Aubert & Cie, 1840. Attractive hand coloured lithograph. From the series Paris L'été by henry Emy. This was a collection of 12 lithographed plates, each featuring one main and three secondary caricatures. Our copy is hand coloured (we have seen one or two coloured copies available, and it would appear that this set was offered as a cheap (uncoloured) or deluxe (coloured) edition. The dandy wearing only a fig leaf, also sports a pink umbrella or parasol and shoes. Of course he also has a hat! Attractive sheet, with a little darkening / foxing to the pages edges. Some tape reinforcement to the rear of the sheet (possibly where originally bound in to the series). Would still be attractive framed. At foot of the plate: "Imp. Aubert et Cie." 320 by 245mm (12½ by 9¾ inches). Undated but dated from OCLC: 270912389 Features in the magnificent Paris Musées de la ville de Paris collection (do go visit if you enjoy lithographs or caricature). First edition.

Le dandy, qui ne porte qu'une feuille de vigne, arbore également un parapluie ou une ombrelle rose et des chaussures. Bien sûr, il a aussi un chapeau ! Feuille attrayante, avec un peu de noircissement / rousseur sur les bords des pages. Quelques renforts de ruban adhésif au verso de la feuille (peut-être à l'endroit où elle a été reliée à l'origine à la série). L'encadrer serait encore intéressant. Au pied de la planche : "Imp. The binding has loss to one corner, and loss of some surface cloth to the spine. loss to the corners of the front cover illustration. Some darkening to the illustration. Inside, the 32 hand coloured sheets are in very good condition. There is a little darkening to the title sheet, and slight handling to the edges of the sheets, but overall in very nice shape. Minne did a number of different lino-cuts, numbered and printed on oriental tissue with an issue of 30 copies. print is 14cm x 13cm. Sheet is 21.5cm x 18cm.

Joris Minne was a Belgian artist (Ostend 1897-Antwerp 1988). He moved from painting to the graphic arts. Co-founder of the Lumière Group (1919) which gave birth to the De Vijf Group. (along with Frans Masereel, Jan Frans Cantré, Jozef Cantré, and Henri van Straten). He illustrated numerous literary works from 1930.
