Andegavi / Angera: Caroli Mame, 1826. A very nice copy of this large Psalter / Brevary created for the use of churches in the Diocese of Angers. Complete. Full title is: "Psalterium despositum Per Hebdomadam juxta ritum Breviarii Andegavensis recens recogniti, una cum officiis B. Mariae Virginis et defunctorum: nec non psalmis et canticis, quibusdam festis solemnioribus propriis: illustrissimi et reverendissimi in Christo Partris D.D. Caroli Montault, episcopi Andegavensis Auctoritate, ac venerabilis capituli consensu editum". Extra large format for public speaking. With music an vignette illustrations. Full leather binding with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. There is rubbing to the boards and a split to the surface layer of the spine affecting the label. Binding is very slightly shaken with cracking to the paper on the front end paper. There rest of the work is generally in good, clean condition. There are a few places where there is weakness to the binding and some soiling / edgewear to a few page edges. There is a tear with corner loss to page 235 / 236. There is also a large closed tear to page 151/152 without loss. See photos. Heavy laid paper with large text. A beautiful edition. 46cm x 30cm.

La reliure est très légèrement secouée et le papier de la première page de garde est craquelé. Le reste de l'ouvrage est généralement en bon état et propre. Il y a quelques endroits où la reliure est affaiblie et quelques salissures / usures sur les bords des pages. Il y a une déchirure avec perte d'un coin à la page 235 / 236. Has the "Timbre Imperial Seine" and 5 cent. tax paid stamp to the first page. Very nice condition. There. Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticizing more Liberal Catholics of the time. His work for the Papacy was recognised by Pius IX, the subject of this work. There is a touch of darkening to the paper covers. Otherwise, a clean and tidy copy, inside and out. London: John Walthoe, 1723. First edition thus. Full leather binding with six raised bands to the spine (no titles). Two thin gilt lines to the edge of the boards. The front board is detached. It has been lightly reattached with archival tape, but needs a permanent repair. Title page has an owner's name to the top edge. Internally clean and tidy with a little marking / foxing only. A scarce book with text in both Latin and English on facing pages, decorated head and tailpieces. The dedication of this edition is to Robert Walpole. He was de facto the first British Prime Minister from 1721. At the beginning of his time in office were Jacobite risings, and anti Catholic sentiment was strong. vi [6] i-v, 6-127. The book is complete, but lacks a 12 page publisher's catalogue that is often attached to the rear. 155 by 95 mm (6 by 3¾ inches). The Monita Secreta was a guide allegedly written by the Jesuits explaining how to gain riches and make influential friends; bibliographers often attribute it to a Pole, Jerome Zahorowski, exiled from the Society in 1611. It was first published in Crakow in 1612. Despite immediate denials from the Society that it was a forgery, it proved popular. It was later claimed to be influential in achieving the expulsion of the Jesuits from France in the 1760's. Première édition donc. Reliure plein cuir à six nerfs au dos (pas de titres). Deux fines lignes dorées au bord des plats. Le panneau avant est détaché. Il a été légèrement recollé avec du ruban d'archives, mais a besoin d'une réparation permanente. La Monita Secreta était un guide prétendument écrit par les jésuites expliquant comment acquérir des richesses et se faire des amis influents ; les bibliographes l'attribuent souvent à un Polonais, Jérôme Zahorowski, exilé de la Société en 1611. Il a été publié pour la première fois à Cracovie en 1612. Malgré les démentis immédiats de la Société selon lesquels il s'agissait d'un faux, il s'est avéré populaire. On a prétendu plus tard qu'il avait contribué à l'expulsion des jésuites de France dans les années 1760.

Paris: Raymond Mazières, 1713. Fourth edition. Has been rebound with leather spine and buckram boards. There are 45 full page engravings numbered from I to XLVI, the first bearing two numbers - both Figure I and II.
Lightly rubbed to spine. Internally, the end papers are toned has a pencil inscription. The title page has an historic (faint) ink written name. Two small nicks to upper edge of first few pages. The back of Figure I and II has a waterstain, but this does not seem to impact too much on the engraving side. Overall, a very good copy.
Drouet De Maupertuy (or Maupertuis), was 17th / 18th century French ecclesiastical writer. He was ordained a priest after retiring to the abbey of Sept-Fonts. Hence 'Par un Solitaire des Sept-Fonts' in place of his name as author.
120 x 100 mm (4¾ x 4 inches). 92 pp. Quatrième édition. A été rebondi avec dos en cuir et planches de bougran. Il y a 45 gravures à pleine page numérotées de I à XLVI, la première portant deux numéros - à la fois Figure I et II.
Légèrement frotté au dos. À l'intérieur, les pages de garde sont teintées d'une inscription au crayon. La page de titre a un nom écrit à l'encre historique (faible). Deux petites entailles au bord supérieur des premières pages. Le dos des figures I et II a une tache d'eau, mais cela ne semble pas trop impacter le côté gravure. Dans l'ensemble, un très bon exemplaire.
Drouet De Maupertuy (ou Maupertuis), était un écrivain ecclésiastique français du XVIIe / XVIIIe siècle. Il est ordonné prêtre après s'être retiré à l'abbaye de Sept-Fonts. D'où « Par un Solitaire des Sept-Fonts » à la place de son nom d'auteur.

Lugduni / Lyon: Giunti Press, 1558. St Vincent Ferrer's Winter Sermons. Contemporary limp vellum, with hand written titles to the spine. Paper shelf label to spine (not library copy though). Vignette title page. Historiated initials throughout. Overall, this work is in very nice condition for its age. The vellum has no chips. Two of the four vellum ties are present. There is marking and staining to the vellum, with a little discolouration. A tiny amount of nicking to the head and tail of the spine. There is a little worm damage to the page lining of the vellum, and a very small amount to the end papers. The text block is not affected by worm. There is a pale stain to the first few pages (inc title) but quite light, and not affecting legibility. Throughout the book, the text block has been somewhat zealously trimmed to the top edge. This has affected a few of the page headers, but not the text. Contemporary owner's name scribbled out to the title page. Some early marginalia in ink scattered throughout. Overall a decent copy. St Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) was a Spanish Dominican Friar. Known as a missionary. During the great schizm, he supported the Avignon Popes (although later transferred his allegiance). His particular interest was in converting Jews, which he did with a combination of persuasion and persecution. anti-Semitic violence often followed in his wake. He died in 1419 in France and was buried in Vannes Cathedral. The printing press of Filippo and Bernardo Giunti was one of the leading Florence printing houses of the Sixteenth century. They also had printing presses in Venice and Lyon. They were mainly involved in printing Roman Catholic religious texts and music, but they were also effectively the official press of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Sermons d'hiver de saint Vincent Ferrier. Vélin souple de l'époque, avec titres manuscrits au dos. Étiquette d'étagère en papier sur le dos (pas de copie de bibliothèque cependant). Vignettage de la page de titre. Initiales historiées partout. Dans l'ensemble, cette œuvre est en très bon état pour son âge. Le vélin n'a pas d'éclats. Deux des quatre attaches en vélin sont présentes. Il y a des marques et des taches sur le vélin, avec une petite décoloration. Une petite quantité d'entailles à la tête et à la queue de la colonne vertébrale. Il y a un peu de vers sur la doublure de la page du vélin et une très petite quantité sur les pages de garde. Le bloc de texte n'est pas affecté par le ver. Il y a une tache pâle sur les premières pages (y compris le titre) mais assez légère et n'affectant pas la lisibilité. Tout au long du livre, le bloc de texte a été coupé avec un peu de zèle jusqu'au bord supérieur. Cela a affecté quelques-uns des en-têtes de page, mais pas le texte. Nom du propriétaire contemporain griffonné sur la page de titre. Quelques premiers marginaux à l'encre éparpillés partout. Dans l'ensemble une copie correcte. St Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) était un frère dominicain espagnol. Connu comme un missionnaire. Pendant le grand schisme, il soutient les papes d'Avignon (bien qu'il transfère plus tard son allégeance). Son intérêt particulier était de convertir les Juifs, ce qu'il a fait avec une combinaison de persuasion et de persécution. la violence antisémite a souvent suivi dans son sillage. Il mourut en 1419 en France et fut inhumé dans la cathédrale de Vannes. L'imprimerie de Filippo et Bernardo Giunti était l'une des principales imprimeries florentines du XVIe siècle. Ils possédaient également des imprimeries à Venise et à Lyon. Ils étaient principalement impliqués dans l'impression de textes religieux catholiques romains et de musique, mais ils étaient aussi effectivement la presse officielle des grands-ducs de Toscane. Devon County Club / R. Cullum, 1821. First Edition / First issue of this pamphlet. Printed by R. Cullum of Exeter. Sewn. No outside binding. Pages 1-16 are comprised of Jones' speech, and pages 17-24 are notes in favour of Emancipation.
The outside pages (title and rear page - there is no cover) are a little darkened and have some markings to them. A little edgewear to the pages, with slight creasing to the corners. Internally clean and tidy with intermittent foxing only. This copy bears the ownership signature of Captain La Roche. Probably Henry La Roche, of Halberton, Devon. Captain of the Royal Navy and J.P. He had served in various vessels during the wars with France from 1792, obtaining the rank of Commander in 1804 and Post Captain in 1806. He died in Devon in 1832. See Gentleman's Magazine. Jones was born at Chudleigh, Devon, where no doubt he was aware at least of the Clifford family. Jones was also an antiquarian, writing several books on the history, and natural history of Devon.

Anvers / Antwerp: chez J. Haest, 1665. A lovely copy of this engraving by Cornelius Schut, under a large passe partout. Signed in the plate, published by Haest of Antwerp. In near perfect condition, this engraving shows the Adoration of the Shepherds. With the Holy Family on the left and cherubs in the sky. The text engraved states `Cor: Schut in cum priuileg; à Anvers chez J.Haest.´ Very good impression with plate tone on laid paper with generous margins around. 15,7 x 11,0 cm. The passe partout is a generous 40cm x 29.5cm, and is very clean and neat. There are no marks or holes / edge wear to the sheet. This appears to be a third state of the engraving, which was re-worked by Haest after Schut's death. A rare item.
