Hay on Wye: Aquarium / Kestrel Gallery, 2005. Signed limited edition (50 copies) book with hand painted original cover. Published by Aquarium & Kestrel Gallery, Hay-on-Wye. Signed and numbered to back board by Billy Childish, with Hangman gallows and Aquarium sea horse stamps. Book is number 33 of only 50. There is a second signature on a heavy paper (almost like a bookplate) tipped into the inside of the front board. This is also adorned with one of Childish's hangman block cuts (a different one to that on the rear board. There is also a small red stamp that looks Chinese, but is indecipherable.
16 pages on heavy stock. Poetry in red type. 12 full colour plates. Hand bound hardback in hessian boards. Red handmade paper endpapers. Book in very good condition with just a touch of darkening to edge of front board (from handling we suspect). 110 x 90 mm (4¼ x 3½ inches).

London: Weidenfeld, 1972. First UK edition. A lovely association copy (of sorts). From the library of Lord Harold Davies of Leek, with a tipped in TLS from Sir Harold Wilson to Lord Leek. The letter is a single sheet, on House of Commons note paper, and refers to his studying Cabinet memoranda during the summer recess of 1978. The book itself, in original blue and red dust wrapper. Red cloth with gilt titles. In addition to the letter from Wilson, there is the ownership signature of Rt Hon Lord Davis of Leek PC to the ffep. There are also some interesting marginalia, some are just penciled ticks or references, others more significant. For example he contradicts an American statement by Johnson with the comment "This was known when I went to Hanoi" Lord Leek was a Labour MP, and Wilson's PPS, who undertook a peace mission to Vietnam at Wilson's behest. His "secret" mission was revealed before he arrived, to the fury of the Americans, and led to him being ignored by Ho Chi Minh. His mission is referenced in this book p581. Dust wrapper is good, a little rubbed and some closed tears internally taped. Now held in an archival sleeve. The book is in very good condition. 24 x 16.5cm. 630 pages.

Aldershot: Gale and Polden Ltd, 1954. First edition in dust wrapper. The wrapper has significant chipping and closed tears, but is still holding together, and is reasonably clean. Held within an archival wrapper. Red cloth boards are clean and tidy, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. A touch of foxing to the closed page edges. 15 black and white photographs, 5 maps. Complete. 119 pages. 190 by 125mm (7½ by 5 inches).

London: Kent & Co, 1862. A lovely bound copy of the first year of this scarce fashion magazine. 12 issues from July 1862 - June 1863. Each issue is comprised of 4 pages of text accompanied by a folding / double page engraved diagram. These show cutting patterns for gentleman's clothing, (and one has a skeleton with accompanied text). To the rear are 10 full page colour illustrations with attractive hand colouring, showing fashions of the day. These with the mark of the fashion plate printer Louis-Joseph Mariton. In later gilt lettered three quarter leather binding. 270 x 210 mm (10¾ x 8¼ inches).

The Metropolitan Foremen Tailors' Society was formed in 1850. In 1862 they began the "West-End Gazette"
to provide patterns and illustrations of the clothing available. This collection of the first year's publication has been bound up - the binder has mistakenly stated "1850" to the spine rather than 1862/3 as should be embossed there.

The print is reasonably clean, but has a damp stain across the cave wall, and light foxing. A little nicking and edgewear to the edges of the card. Issued as #6 of "Political sketches" - Issued in 5 volumes. (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington; George William Finch-Hatton, 10th Earl of Winchelsea). Description is: "The Earl of Winchelsea conceived so great a disgust with politics, on account of the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act, that he announced it to be his intention of retiring altogether from the House of Lords. Moore, the lyrical poet, ever ready with his joke, took occasion, on the day after his Lordship's announcement of his resolution, to tell the story of a man in the gallery at Drury Lane, who, having paid his shilling to see George Barnwell, and not choosing to be disturbed from his tragedy-state of mind by the noise which an Easter Monday audience generally makes before the play begins, called out lustily for silence, and having, with much difficulty, obtained a hearing, very gravely acquainted the audience, that if they did not conduct themselves in a more orderly manner, he should be under the necessity of leaving the house. The public laughed with the poet and at the Earl, well knowing that such resolutions are the offspring of temporary emotions, and are never kept." Mclean. The boards are slightly loose, and the binding a little cracked to the hinges, but still holding well. A little rubbing to the spine and edges, with some loss, but otherwise in clean condition. Marbled page edges. Internally clean and tidy with a little foxing only. Frere's complete works were published in 1871, with a memoir by his nephews W.E. and Sir Henry Bartie frere. This is the second enlarged edition. John Hookham Frere (1769-1846) was an English diplomat and author. His reputation now largely rests on his translations of Aristophanes. His "prospectus and specimen", a mock Arthurian poem, was used extensively by Byron in "Don Juan." Bookplate and signature of Reginald Heber Macaulay from his Eton master Francis St John Thackeray on the occasion of his leaving Eton in 1878. Macaulay (1858-1937) was an amateur English footballer who won the FA cup for the Old Etonians in 1882 and made an appearance for England in 1881. viii, 354., viii, 426., 436. pages. 22cm x 14cm.

Complete with all 81 colour engraved costume plates. Although the title pages state 84 plates, in fact the Errata and plate index show that the Chelsea Pensioner and the Greenwich Pensioner are on a single plate, elsewhere the Fisherwoman and the Dustman are on the same plate, and the plate of the Dr of Music is listed twice. So in fact there are 81 plates and the work is complete. Some light foxing to the margins. A little splitting to the binding of Volume 2. Overall a very nice copy.
