    These fabulous illustrations, were created by Lesueur and Alaux between 1826 and 1828. Lithography by Godefroy Engelmann. They were originally gathered in a portfolio of 14 plates (according to FirstSearch - some sources state 15 but may be including a title). They seem to have been issued uncoloured, and we have seen no original plates offered with hand colouring. Each plate was presented with an engraved view of a roman antiquity or scene, and then several lines of small text in French below. Each has the contemporary hand colouring, and is framed and glazed with passe partout and a more recent simple gilt frame. Here the views have a visible area of 47cm x 31cm, beneath a passe partout of 49cm x 59cm, and held within a frame of 53cm x 62cm. The passe partout has a very slight wave to each plate, otherwise they are in fine condition. The five views are: Colonne élevée á L'Empereur Phocas (1826), good clean condition; Temple de Mars-Vengeur (1826) very good clean condition, with a few very light foxing spots to the text area; Vue du Capitole (1827) in excellent clean condition; Vue du Portique d'Octavie (No date), good clean condition; and Vue du Forum Trajan (1828) In excellent condition. This is the only picture which is horizontal rather than vertical. Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839): Lithographer printer, painter, designer and inventor. From Mulhouse, he was a prolific publisher; Jean-Paul Alaux (1788-1858) from Bordeaux, was a lithographer and painter who specialised in landscape and antique views; Jean-Baptiste-Cicéron Lesueur (1794-1883) was primarily a French architect, but spent some time studying the ancient architecture of Rome and collaborated with Alaux on this project. Conforms to OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 1061143512. FirstSearch shows only one library with the portfolio.

Six charming colour plates depicting children enjoying Christmas and other holidays. The idea was for a child to cut out and glue the figures from separate sheets (not included) on to the scenes to complete the pictures. Or, it is suggested, the blanks could be hand coloured. There is a note to say: Gum Arabic dissolved in boiling water is the best material to make the cut-out figures adhesive. 12 pages. 265 x 230 mm (10½ x 9 inches). Covers are a little soiled, and have moderate edge wear. Four pages are complete, and two partially complete. Signs of sheen from dried glue on some pages, and on back cover.

Beautifully executed, would appear to be the original for a book illustration? 16 water and marsh birds are illustrated, including a swan and a flamingo. illustration is on art board and is sized 48cm x 31cm. It is presented under passe partout of 60cm x 40cm. To the bottom edge is a little marking. One of the birds (Grey Heron) has been neatly pasted onto the rest of the image. To the reverse of the passe partout is a photocopy of the artwork with the birds labelled in German. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition

Bonne impression propre sur un papier vergé épais et propre. Le papier contient un filigrane de trois croissants de lune. Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.
