London: Unpublished, 1960. A hardback bound typescript of a report by Lt-Col Shore, on faults and problems with the architecture of Milton Abbey in Dorset. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles. The typescript itself is unpaginated, but is 11 pages long. Printed to one side in red and black. Also bound in are 8 large (305 mm x 240 mm) black and white silver gelatin photographs of details of the Abbey architecture, including one with the members of the Abbey team showing some Saxon stone work. There are two further loose photographs, one of which is a little tatty to the edges. The report is signed in fountain pen by the author. There is also a compliments letter loosely enclosed. In good clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the edges only. 355 by 255mm (14 by 10 inches).

Bombay: Tata Graduate School of Social Work, 1943. First Edition. A collection of essays on important issues for social care in wartime. Edited by Kumarappa. A scarce item in itself. There are no copies available online at the time of cataloguing. This copy has a gift inscription to Lady Mountbatten. Original dust wrapper. A little marking and edge wear, with a mark particularly to the front cover. A little darkening to the wrapper. The book itself is in a good, clean condition. Slight darkening of the wartime economy pages. Gift inscription is neatly written to the front end paper. (Nb. Inscription is from the Tata Institute of Social Science - not Kumarappa himself). Edwina Mountbatten, Countess of Burma, was involved in Social Service and the St John's Ambulance during the Second World War, and remained very involved for the rest of her life. Her husband was the last Viceroy of India, and orchestrated the partition. This book was given to her about a month after partition. Jagdisan Mohandas Kumarappa (1886–1957) was an erudite scholar and a passionate social reformer. He championed the cause of social work education and criminology as the director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This was the first school of Social Work in Asia, and remains India's top school of Social work. 160 pages. 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches).

Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition.
Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages 36 plates. Sadly lacks folding map at rear. Undated, but WorldCat lists the 1930 printing as same pagination - 380 pages. Binding is a little rubbed on the corners - but a good and very clean example. Slipcase is quite rubbed - hence the item's price. 305 x 220 mm (12 x 8¾ inches). Ravissante reliure trois quarts cuir à plats marbrés et étui assorti. Texte en français. Traduction de M.-L. Landel. Manque malheureusement la carte pliante à l'arrière. Non daté, mais WorldCat répertorie l'impression de 1930 avec la même pagination - 380 pages. Jean-Jacques Waltz was born in Colmar in 1873. He was a French caricaturist known for his satirical work particularly depicting German tourists. This book illustrates his pro-French Alsatian feelings on Germany's annexation of the Alsace region. Hansi was imprisoned several times by the German authorities, culminating in a one-year prison sentence in 1914.

Soft covers are a little darkened, but sound and overall in very good shape. Signed by the artist Rouveyre to the half title page. The original name of the dedication has been cut out, leaving an area of loss to the front end paper. With 8 full page illustrations by Rouveyre. The final pages are beautifully presented in pure Art Nouveau typeset and design with cul-de-lampes and vignettes. A lovely piece of work. Printed entirely from woodcuts by Rouveyre, destroyed after printing. [1-24], XXV-XXXVI pp. Text in French. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches). Très bel exemplaire de cette édition limitée.
