Munich: 1967. Original watercolour on handmade paper - in pen, ink, oil paint. This abstract work is in black, earthy green, orange, grey and blue tones almost resembles a Viking longboat. There are scribbled elements of Informalism. All Mehling's work remained untitled, though the works do state the year of origin, usually the month and often the techniques used. This work was done in February 1967. As Mehling was also a pharmacist in Munich at this time, he enjoyed experimenting with mixing his own paints, pigments and inks. An original by "the German master of the small format" (Haudenschild + Laubscher 1968). In metallic effect wooden frame, under glass, with heavy white mount. Signed in pencil at bottom centre.

Hofheim: 1977. Original watercolour on handmade paper - in pen, ink, and gold dust paint. This abstract work is in earthy green and brown tones, with black backwash. There are calligraphic elements reminiscent of the aesthetics of East Asian characters. This illegible writing conveys the impression of poetry or musical scores. Mehling felt that Arabic or Asian writing becomes an aesthetic experience when one can't read it, so he used this concept often in his works of Informalism. As Mehling was also a pharmacist in his earlier years, he enjoyed experimenting with mixing his own paints, pigments and inks. Nicolas Charles Seringe, first Teacher at the Academy of Bern then Professor of Botany and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Lyon wrote a work with the exact description, classification and history of flowers. He sought to avoid scientific language, and to arrange the objects in an easy order, through which one can easily learn about plants, how to propagate them and finally how to use them. Nicolas Charles Seringe, d'abord Professeur à l'Académie de Berne puis Professeur de Botanique et membre de l'Académie Royale des Sciences et des Arts de Lyon a écrit un ouvrage avec la description exacte, la classification et l'histoire des fleurs. Il a cherché à éviter le langage scientifique et à ranger les objets dans un ordre facile, à travers lequel on peut facilement en apprendre davantage sur les plantes, comment les propager et enfin comment les utiliser.

This copy is #36, one of 181 on vélin de Papeteries de Lana, with the suite of 4 plates 'refusées' in colour and black, and a suite of all the illustrations in black. Complete. Story attributed to Vietnamese writer Pham Van Ky. All in very good, clean condition. 173 pages, + plates. 265 x 205 mm (10½ x 8 inches).

At the time of cataloguing, there were not other original copies available for sale, and the last auction record we can find is from 1982. Allegedly the work of Lewis the Fourteenth (Louis XIV) the Sun King of France, but edited (and perhaps written) by the comte de Gain de Montagnac. Two volumes (complete). In the original publisher's pale blue/grey stiff card boards. contains Military memoirs, Correspondence of Lewis XIV, with Philip V., etc. Notes to the end of each volume. 18 pages of adverts (dated July 1st 1806) for recently published works. text in English. xvi, [ii], 268., 210, [ii], 16 pp. OCLC: 12425737. 230 by 150mm (9 by 6 inches). The paper covers to the spines have degraded and are no longer present. However the bindings are firm and strong. Some darkening / staining and light bumping to the boards. The boards are slightly loose to the text block (due to lack of spine cover). Internally clean throughout, but with intermittent foxing. Many pages uncut.

Some rubbing to the spine edges, but overall in attractive condition. Bookplate of Mary Catherine Asburnham to the front paste down. Signature of J. A. Murray to the verso of the second ffep. George Baillie (1664-1738) was a Scottish politician who sat in the Scottish parliament until 1707 then the British Commons until 1734. His wife Griselle, was a singer and songwriter. Their daughter (also Griselle b 1692) married British army officer Sir Alexander Murray of Stanhope

Lady Mary Catherine Ashburnham (1890-1953) was the last in the line of the Baronage and Earldom of Ashburnham, whose seat (Ashburnham Place) pictured in the bookplate, is now part of Westminster School.

He was a Roman Catholic Priest, radio speaker on KRO in the 1930's and charity worker in The Netherlands. During the Second World War, he was interned because of his opposition to National Socialism. He died in 1974. A journal-memoir of the beginning of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile on Saint Helena. The core of the work transcribes Las Cases' near-daily conversations with the former Emperor on his life, his career, his political philosophy, and the conditions of his exile. First published in 1823 after Napoleon's death, the work was an immediate and continuing literary success, receiving multiple translations and appearing in new editions throughout the 19th century and into the 20th. Le cœur de l'œuvre retranscrit les conversations quasi quotidiennes de Las Cases avec l'ancien empereur sur sa vie, sa carrière, sa philosophie politique et les conditions de son exil. Publié pour la première fois en 1823 après la mort de Napoléon, l'ouvrage connut un succès littéraire immédiat et continu, recevant de multiples traductions et apparaissant dans de nouvelles éditions tout au long du XIXe siècle et jusqu'au XXe. New York: Frederick A. Praeger, 1963. First edition. In original dust jacket. Fascinating, both historically and in the present climate. In James' own words "a provocative analysis of the history of relations between Mexico and the United States on all levels - diplomatic, military, economic, and social - considered in terms of Mexico's developing nationalism and America's attitudes to it". 472 pp. 220 x 150 mm (8¾ x 6 inches). Dust jacket has some light bumping and a very small nick to the top edge on the front. Inside the book is in a very good / fine condition. Freelance American journalist, Daniel James (b. 1914), covered Latin America during the Cold War years. His writings reflect two themes: 1) that the region had become a primary target for Soviet aggression against interests of the United States; and 2) that American policies had failed to reflect the importance of the region to the United States. The author of hundreds of columns, articles and at least four books on these topics, including: "Red design for the Americas: Guatemala prelude" (1954), James first went to Latin America in 1953. He described Communist activity in Guatemala and in British Guiana in articles published in that year. James continued to publish articles reflecting his favorite themes in "Harper's," "The Saturday Evening Post," and the "London Observer." Later, he prepared a study of U.S. business activities in Mexico for the United States Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (1956). From 1955 through 1967 Daniel James was a syndicated columnist for the Hearst Newspapers and SPADEA, publishing his views under the title: "Dateline Latin America." During the 1960s he published: "Cuba: the first Soviet satellite in the Americas" (1961); "Mexico and the Americas" (1963); and, "Che Guevara; A biography" (1969), the last written with the aid of diaries found when their Guevara was killed while trying to start a Communist revolution in Bolivia (1967). Subsequently, James was for four years a tourism director in Mexico City (1974-1978). After 1987 he operated the Mexico-United States Institute in Washington, D.C.

London: Unpublished, 1960. A hardback bound typescript of a report by Lt-Col Shore, on faults and problems with the architecture of Milton Abbey in Dorset. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles. The typescript itself is unpaginated, but is 11 pages long. Printed to one side in red and black. Also bound in are 8 large (305 mm x 240 mm) black and white silver gelatin photographs of details of the Abbey architecture, including one with the members of the Abbey team showing some Saxon stone work. There are two further loose photographs, one of which is a little tatty to the edges. The report is signed in fountain pen by the author. There is also a compliments letter loosely enclosed. In good clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the edges only. 355 by 255mm (14 by 10 inches).

1890. A beautiful copy of this miniature Koran. Full leather, with a leather clasp (still fully working). Gilt decoration. This is a little rubbed to the edges of the spine, but still attractive. All edges gilt. Sewn binding. 3.4cm x 2.1cm. Unpaginated. Although there are no publication details in the book, the titles and index have been confirmed by an Arabic colleague to be an Ottoman Koran. Undated, but probably late Nineteenth Century. Internally in excellent, clean condition. 34 x 21 mm (1¼ x 0¾ inches).
