Nicolas Charles Seringe, first Teacher at the Academy of Bern then Professor of Botany and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Lyon wrote a work with the exact description, classification and history of flowers. He sought to avoid scientific language, and to arrange the objects in an easy order, through which one can easily learn about plants, how to propagate them and finally how to use them.

The core of the work transcribes Las Cases' near-daily conversations with the former Emperor on his life, his career, his political philosophy, and the conditions of his exile. First published in 1823 after Napoleon's death, the work was an immediate and continuing literary success, receiving multiple translations and appearing in new editions throughout the 19th century and into the 20th. The work entered the popular imagination as something like Napoleon's own personal and political testament, and as such became a founding text in the development of the Napoleon cult and the ideology of Bonapartism.

Dust jacket has some light bumping and a very small nick to the top edge on the front. Inside the book is in a very good / fine condition. Freelance American journalist, Daniel James (b. 1914), covered Latin America during the Cold War years. His writings reflect two themes: 1) that the region had become a primary target for Soviet aggression against interests of the United States; and 2) that American policies had failed to reflect the importance of the region to the United States. The author of hundreds of columns, articles and at least four books on these topics, including: "Red design for the Americas: Guatemala prelude" (1954), James first went to Latin America in 1953. He described Communist activity in Guatemala and in British Guiana in articles published in that year. James continued to publish articles reflecting his favorite themes in "Harper's," "The Saturday Evening Post," and the "London Observer." Later, he prepared a study of U.S. business activities in Mexico for the United States Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (1956). From 1955 through 1967 Daniel James was a syndicated columnist for the Hearst Newspapers and SPADEA, publishing his views under the title: "Dateline Latin America." During the 1960s he published: "Cuba: the first Soviet satellite in the Americas" (1961); "Mexico and the Americas" (1963); and, "Che Guevara; A biography" (1969), the last written with the aid of diaries found when their Guevara was killed while trying to start a Communist revolution in Bolivia (1967). Subsequently, James was for four years a tourism director in Mexico City (1974-1978). After 1987 he operated the Mexico-United States Institute in Washington, D.C.

Edwina Mountbatten, Countess of Burma, was involved in Social Service and the St John's Ambulance during the Second World War, and remained very involved for the rest of her life. Her husband was the last Viceroy of India, and orchestrated the partition. This book was given to her about a month after partition. Jagdisan Mohandas Kumarappa (1886–1957) was an erudite scholar and a passionate social reformer. He championed the cause of social work education and criminology as the director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This was the first school of Social Work in Asia, and remains India's top school of Social work. 160 pages. 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches).

Naval Brigade clearing streets of Alexandria with the Gatling

Alexandria: 1882. An original, hand drawn sketch depicting a naval brigade clearing the streets of Alexandria. Ink on white paper. This would seem to have been an initial sketch, as the foreground (the brigade with the gun) is well worked, whilst the background is less defined. There are a couple of notes on the sheet. A couple of the figures in the sketch are also labelled Royal Marine and Officer. This would appear to be the first draft of a news report - similar to that which appeared as the front page of the Illustrated London News for July 29th 1882. Sketch is 240 x 160 mm. Good clean condition. It is pasted onto a larger sheet of pale brown card. This is 500 x 320 mm and is creased and darkened, and with a few closed tears. A very nice piece of historical visual documentation. Following the cutting of the Suez canal, British interests in Egypt deepened, and in May 1882 there was an uprising by Urabi Pasha. After an initial heavy naval bombardment, Naval Brigades and Marines were sent ashore to restore order. The revolt was quashed, and Egypt came under partial British control until the Second World War. The drawing clearly shows the use of a hopper fed Gatling gun. This weapon, developed in 1865, was used by the British Army from 1873. This conflict was the first use of the Gatling by the Royal Navy.

The binding is firm. There is a scratch to the front illustration, and a little fading / marking to the rear panel It looks as if there has been a skillful repair to the corner of the rear board. Inside, the illustrated pages are clean and bright, with just a fractional darkening.

*C.E. Brock (1870-1938) was a prolific book illustrator and painter. He lived in London and achieved his first major commissions at the age of 20 - the same year that this work was published. Presumably he purchased it from Alph. Rogues. 220 x 330 mm (8¾ x 13 inches). Coquins. 220 par 330 mm (8¾ par 13 pouces).

There is moderate rubbing to the edges of the spine with some loss. Bumping to the green boards - particularly to the front board. Inside the book is in excellent condition. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board. Possibly the General himself or one of his family- as it is A Saû Girardin. To the title page, it is hand written in ink "Par B Ducos & Saû de Girardin". A touch of edge wear to the base of the map. Map size: Map size is 47.5 x 67 cm

Note: Although this work is published anonymously - it is well known to have been written by Girardin. We can find no trace of an involvement by a B. Ducos.
