Paris: Chez Onfroy, 1780. Two volumes in one, first edition. A rare guide to the state of Great Britain from a French perspective. Volume one was for 1780, volume two for 1781. It would seem that there were plans for this to be an annual review, but if so, this doesn't appear to have happened, as Worldcat only records these two years. Full leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine. The label and one panel of the gilt to the spine has been pulled away, leaving some leather, but no surface (see photos). The rest of the boards are in good, slightly bumped condition. Inside there is an owner's signature to the end paper. The rest is clean and tidy. The half-title reads "Etat de l'Angleterre, pour l'année 1780." [viii], 178, [2] pages. The first volume conforms to OCLC: 40428559. This is followed by another half title for the year 1781, and a second volume of the book. [viii], 199, [3]. pages. This second volume conforms to OCLC: 630334412. Both volumes are full of the in depth information required by researchers. Including names, addresses, ranks etc. For example, there is a list of the names and addresses of all the London bankers, accounts of the King and court, names of ships and vessels in the navy etc. etc. Text in French. 170 by 100mm (6¾ by 4 inches). No other copies available to purchase at the time of cataloguing.

The Nazi's were fairly obsessed with symbols and laying claim to historical lineage. One of the ways they did this was through the use of (by now) ceremonial edged weapons. Contents include The City of Swords, Military Swords, Swords of the SS, Police & Fire Dept, the Göring Wedding Sword, Proposed Sword Designs, Military daggers, Political Daggers, Governmental Daggers, Blades of the Axis, Reproductions etc. Hardback with laminated illustrated boards. A touch marked and bumped, with slight darkening to the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout, printed on glossy paper. Full of photographic illustrations. 256 pages. 23cm x 15.5cm.

Works are: Eikōn basilikē, vel, Imago Regis Caroli, in illis suis aerumnis et solitudine Hagae-Comitis (Den Haag) Samuelis Broun. 1649. Conforms to OCLC 60405083. Beautiful double page frontis engraving by Hollar. Text in Latin. Translation by John Earle. Attributed to Charles I and John Gauden. The book presents itself as the king's personal meditations, prayers, and reflections during his imprisonment, portraying him as a pious martyr steadfast in faith amid political turmoil [12], 272 pages.

Anonymous author & printer. 1649 Conforms to OCLC 70699080. 468 pages. Seems to be first edition but not clear. Claude Saumaise (Salmasius) was a French Humanist (1596-1653). This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive armorial ex libris belonging to I.L.B. De Neve to the inside board. They were likely a member of the De Neve family, a name associated with the Low Countries. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

Holland: L.C.G. Malmberg. First edition. Two volumes (of three) produced. Volume I published in 1909, Volume II in 1910. Each complete in themselves for the period that they cover. Text entirely in Latin. Soft grey paper covers. Pages largely uncut. A very nice copy of these two books. The pale grey paper covers are slightly darkened, and have light foxing spots, but overall in clean and tidy shape. Internally clean throughout. Monastery library bookplate to the front of each volume. [viii], 328., + 443. pp
These books were a gift to the Bridgettine House of Syon Abbey from the Rev. Benedict Williamson, a Roman Catholic priest who was a keen supporter of the Bridgettine order and the author of a history of the order. There is a presentation inscription to the front of each volume.

Paris: P.L. Morin, 1890. First edition. A nice copy of this catalogue full of engraved examples of the staircases of Volland. Original hardback, with red cloth spines and marbled boards. Fractional rubbing, but holding well. Gilt titles to the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a fractional darkening to the pages only. Title page with Volland's statement to the verso. Company stamps to the title and blank pages. There is also a separate full page advert for Volland, which is a copy of the title page. 43 full page black and white plates, including a double plate. Complete. Overall a very nice copy. 41cm x 32cm.

Reigate: N.P, C1935. First edition. A lovely original sketch of the Santa Maria, Columbus's flag ship. In pencil and graphite crayon. Signed to the bottom left. This appears to have been an illustration intended for a book, as there is text beneath about the sailor's fear of the sea week in the Sargasso sea. We have been unable to identify any book that this was used in. A nice, clean and skilled pencil illustration, with just a touch of creasing to the sheet. To the rear is a feint beginning of another similar sketch and the artists name and address in Surrey. 37cm x 24cm. A lovely piece. The floating sargassum weed that grows all across the Sargasso had a malevolent reputation. In 1492, Christopher Columbus was the first to record finding the stuff, a bright gold plant that resembles ordinary seaweed, but remarkably, has no need of roots, simply floating over the nearly 3,000 fathoms of ocean separating it from the abyssal plain below. Columbus and his frightened men were tricked by the weed into thinking they must be near land, when in fact, they were still in the mid-Atlantic. In the years that followed, stories grew of weed thick enough to trap ships, a legend whose modern successor was the Bermuda Triangle.

. Première édition. Une jolie esquisse originale du Santa Maria, le navire amiral de Christophe Colomb. Réalisée au crayon à papier et au crayon graphite. Signée en bas à gauche. Il semble s'agir d'une illustration destinée à un livre, car elle est accompagnée d'un texte évoquant la peur des marins pendant leur semaine en mer des Sargasses. Nous n'avons pas réussi à identifier le livre dans lequel elle a été utilisée. Une belle illustration au crayon, propre et habile, avec juste quelques plis sur la feuille. Au verso, on aperçoit le début d'un autre croquis similaire, ainsi que le nom et l'adresse de l'artiste dans le Surrey. 37 cm x 24 cm. Une très belle pièce. Les algues sargasses qui flottent dans toute la mer des Sargasses avaient une réputation malveillante. En 1492, Christophe Colomb fut le premier à signaler sa découverte : une plante dorée brillante qui ressemble à une algue ordinaire, mais qui, fait remarquable, n'a pas besoin de racines et flotte simplement à près de 3 000 brasses au-dessus de l'océan qui la sépare de la plaine abyssale. Colomb et ses hommes effrayés ont été trompés par cette algue, qui leur a fait croire qu'ils devaient être près de la terre ferme, alors qu'en réalité, ils se trouvaient encore au milieu de l'Atlantique. Dans les années qui ont suivi, des histoires ont circulé selon lesquelles cette algue était suffisamment dense pour piéger les navires, une légende dont le successeur moderne est le triangle des Bermudes.

Orléans & Paris: Orléans : Chez Couret de Villeneuve / Paris : Chez Cuchet, 1784. First edition. A rare local history and geographical study of Olivet, a commune just south of Orléans in the Loiret department. Although this first edition is anonymous, it was authored by Préaux. Soft covers. Pink paper. This is a touch faded to the spine, but overall in excellent condition. Paper shelf label for the bibliothèque du fonds Bergevin to the top of the front cover. Taking its name from the two leading figures of the Bergevin family, Louis-Athanase Bergevin (1753-1832) and his son Louis-Catherine (1798-1876), were magistrates from Blois and major landowners in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt. The collection was dispersed at auction in Véndome in 2022. Title page with printers vignette. The topographical essay about the Loiret has an attractive vignette to the header. The second half of the work contains the "nomenclature raisonnée" of local plants, amphibians, insects, shells, and finally an omissions and errata section. Many pages uncut. Sydney: Davies and Co, 1888. First edition. An attractive original albumen photograph of the dredger Wallaroo. This was a 150 tonne Iron Screw Steamer that was built in the Clyde shipyard (London Works ) by the Scottish ship builder William Simons & Co. Ltd. A hand written note to the top edge (quite faint) states that the image was taken when the Wallaroo was at the end of her commission. This was in 1888. The image is an albumen photograph (14.5cm x 20cm) in excellent condition pasted onto a backing board which is printed as Davies & Co. of King Street, Sydney. Photograph is clean and tidy. The backing board is a little stained and has marking to the top edge. Chip to the top left corner of the backing board. A scarce item, we cannot find another copy of this photograph available. Card is 25.5cm x 30cm.

Il manque un petit morceau dans le coin supérieur gauche du carton de support. Il s'agit d'un objet rare ; nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemplaire de cette photographie sur le marché. Clean tidy print, with slight untidiness to cut edge (outside the black ruled frame). Fractional browning to edges. Mount is clean and neat. Issued as number 174, in a series entitled: Political sketches - Issued in 5 volumes. (Daniel O'Connell; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) Description is: Lord Grey is endeavouring to allure Mr. O'Connell by the offer of a place. The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title. It is well known that the fish did not bite. This from Mclean. Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B. From No.1 to No. 600. Conforms to the National Portrait Gallery copy: NPG D41109.

L'inscription "Courier" sur sa canne à pêche indique que l'offre a été faite dans un paragraphe, publié à titre de sondage, dans le journal du soir portant ce titre. Il est bien connu que le poisson n'a pas mordu. Ceci est de Mclean. Clé illustrative des croquis politiques de H.B. du n° 1 au n° 600. Original decorated cloth with decorations to the front board in blue and red, and titles in gilt. Titles to the spine are in gilt - somewhat faded. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the spine. Binding is a little shaken, with cracking to the paper on the front hinge. Front end paper is lightly creased. Binding is still holding well though. The final gather is also a litthe loose, but holding. Internally clean, with a little darkening to the page edges. Overall, a decent copy of this beautifully illustrated French history. This handsome volume, of impressive size, brings together the three titles extraordinarily illustrated by Job with full-page illustrations. Unpaginated but 242 pages. Printed by Edouard Crété. 36.5cm x 30cm.

Les titres sur le dos sont dorés, mais légèrement effacés. Les bords du dos présentent quelques traces de frottement. La reliure est un peu abîmée, avec des craquelures sur le papier au niveau de la charnière avant. La page de garde avant est légèrement froissée. La reliure tient toutefois bien. Le dernier cahier est également un peu lâche, mais tient bien. L'intérieur est propre, avec un léger noircissement sur les bords des pages. Dans l'ensemble, un exemplaire correct de cette histoire française magnifiquement illustrée. Ce beau volume, d'une taille impressionnante, rassemble les trois titres extraordinairement illustrés par Job avec des illustrations pleine page. Non paginé, mais 242 pages. Imprimé par Edouard Crété. 36,5 cm x 30 cm.
