Sttrae / Styrae: Gregorii Menhardt, 1757. First edition. Contemporary full leather. Two books bound as one, complete with index etc: From St Augustine's Abbey Library in Kent, with their stamps to the end papers and paste down. Divisional title to Volume II. Overall this book is in very good condition. The full leather binding is a little rubbed and cracked, but is holding well and not in danger of breaking. The titles to the spine have lost all trace of gilt (if any) and now appear blind embossed. Early owner's detail beneath a library bookplate and card index to the front paste down. The rest of the book is clean and tidy, with just a touch of darkening. A tag has been fixed to the divisional title at the beginning of vol. II. This is still firmly in place, but has caused a little tearing to the edge of the page. Bezange was a Benedictine Monk. [xxviii], 1-216; [ii], 1-464, [xxiv]. pp. The register is separate for each vol. so A-Dd4; A-Ppp3. Plein cuir contemporain.

The text block is spotless, with the engravings beautifully clean and bright. 260 by 210mm (10¼ by 8¼ inches). This is a scarce London edition. First Latin-French edition of Faerno'’s collection, an English-French edition was published two years before. Gabriele Faerno (d. 1561) was commissioned to compile a selection of Aesopian fables by his protector Pope Pius IV in c. 1550. The collection of 100 fables was published in 1563 only, after Faerno'’s death. Charles Perrault’'s French translation in verses was first published in 1699. His aim was to achieve an ideal combination of closeness to the Latin text with La Fontaine’'s subtle poetry. The present Latin-French edition was in use as a text book at the time.
