Boston: Munroe and Francis, 1825. A rare item. We can find no copies on Copac / Firstsearch and no references to this, but Circa 1825 (from Munroe history). Printed in the Boston Editions of Coloured Books series. Soft paper covers plus 8 leaves of paper. Each is printed in red (what the publisher's meant by coloured books) and is printed in woodblock to one side only - alternately the verso or recto. Each of the pages has 12 vignette engravings of common objects with their name beneath. Covers are a little darkened and marked, with slight edgewear. There is an old repair with archival tape to the rear cover. Inside the pages are a little darkened but in very good overall condition. Sewn binding. Munroe and Francis operated from 1805-1832. Initially printing Directories and a newspaper (The monthly monitor), Their children's books seem mainly to have been published in the 1820's. We have been unable to trace another copy of this book. 180 by 120mm (7 by 4¾ inches).

Chacune des pages comporte 12 vignettes gravées d'objets courants avec leur nom en dessous. Les couvertures sont un peu assombries et marquées, avec une légère usure des bords. La couverture arrière a été réparée avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. A l'intérieur, les pages sont un peu noircies mais en très bon état général. Reliure cousue. Munroe et Francis ont exercé leur activité de 1805 à 1832. Ils ont commencé par imprimer des annuaires et un journal (The monthly monitor). Leurs livres pour enfants semblent avoir été publiés principalement dans les années 1820. Nous n'avons pas été en mesure de retrouver un autre exemplaire de ce livre. 180 x 120 mm

The front of the dust jacket has some marks, small tears / nicks to edges, a small surface loss, and a stain. Cloth boards are faded to the bottom and the boards are slightly warped. Neat bookseller label to the front of the dust jacket from La Librairie Francaise Peking - Tientsin. The bookshop was in the lobby of the Grand Hotel de Pekin and had a branch in Tientsin. Text and sepia reproductions of photographs taken by Ernst Boerschmann, documenting his journey in the 12 provinces: Zhili, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Szechuan, Hupei, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang. Boerschmann was the first Westerner to systematically document Chinese religious architecture. Captions in English, German, French and Italian. xxvi, 288 pp. 315 x 245 mm (12½ x 9¾ inches).

London: C. Clarke, / T. Egerton. Printed by C. Clarke, Published by T. Egerton, 1801-2. Two volumes 8vo, First Thus (Clarke edition) and third edition overall of this work. Original dark green buckram with a little rubbing to the covers and edges. Brown label to the spine of each volume with titles in gilt. Complete with 52 aquatint plates, two maps and aquatint titles. The binding to the front of Volume I is a touched cracked (but holding). In Volume II an early gather (with the list of plates and first plate) are detached but present. Pages a little darkened and with some foxing, but still a very attractive copy. Some water damage to bottom edge of plates and text of Volume I.
The only significant alteration between editions seems to have been the replacement of the "East View of Staines (Old) Bridge." xvi, 209; [iv], 258 pp. Abbey, Scenery..., 430. Cox, III, p. 180. Upcott, English Topography, CXLIII (Vol. III, pp. 768-770.) 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches).

Percaline vert foncé d'origine avec un peu de frottement sur les couvertures et les bords. Etiquette brune au dos de chaque volume avec titres dorés. Complet avec 52 planches aquatintes, 2 cartes et titres aquatintes. La reliure au début du vol. I est un touché fissuré (mais tenant) dans le vol II. une première cueillette (avec la liste des assiettes et 1ère assiette) est détachée mais présente. Pages un peu assombries et avec quelques rousseurs, mais reste un très bel exemplaire. Bright colour original lithograph to the covers. A slight touch of rubbing / bumping to the covers, otherwise in excellent condition, now protected with archival plastic. Inside are short contributions by many authors: Pierre Emmanuel, Gabriel Audisio, DH Lawrence, Raymond Queneau, Antonio Machado, Paul Eluard, Gaston Bachelard, et al. These are accompanied by 50 (including covers) original lithographs by Marchand. Pages are in excellent, fractionally darkened condition. There is a tiny amount of nicking to the bottom edge of the front end paper. 86 pages. 24cm x 21cm.

Antwerpen: Van Herberg 't Leeuwke, 1977. An attractive First Edition of this illustrated work. Cream soft folder with vignette of Breughel to the front cover. Inside are a colophon, and 12 leaves of illustration and text, with a final leaf of illustration only showing Breughel in modern Brussels. Bibliophile edition, in an edition of 500 numbered copies, 25 of which are signed. This copy is #20/25. Cover is a little marked and handled, but the leaves themselves, on stiff card, are in good, clean condition. The text is by Wannes, also known as Van Wannes, and Van de Velde. Illustrations by E. Nauendorf: NA, 1887. Nine leaves with original plant and animal studies. White heightened charcoal and partly pen and ink drawings, mostly dated 1887. The leaves are approximately 32.8 x 26 cm. The subjects are skilfully executed and include apricot blossom (white), cherry blossom (white), meadow ane mone white. - Fragrant Narcissus (white) & Portrait of a Young Girl. - Vine leaves, verso leaves of oak, linden, rose and pipe leaf. - 2 different plants. - Apple Blossom (White), White Daffodil, Flying Hearts (Red), Cockchafer. - Yellow daffodil, daisy. - Violet lilac, white lilac, lilac (light purple), forget-me-not (blue). - Violets and Cowslips. - There is a fascinating page entitled "Zoological Garden Leipzig" which includes sketches of goat, deer, stork, ostrich, ducks & two foot studies. A skilled and unusual collection of original sketches. A little darkening to the pages and slight edgewear, but still attractive. Richard Wintzer (1866 Nauendorf near Halle - Berlin 1952) was a skilled artist, dealing mainly in pencil / charcoal and who specialized in portaits.

Paris: E.P.A. Hachette, 2005. First Edition thus (French edition). A retrospective of Helmut Newton's work, showing his theatrical / cinematic approach to portraiture. The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. Contents include Motels - Spring summer fashion - Kinski revealed - Living dolls - Prussian guard - At your service - The angels - Young and old - The Newton girls - Living and dining - 10 questions - Loving ladies - Playmates by Helmut Newton - Desires of tomorrow - To your beauty - Newton Physics - Afterword. 176 pages. 310 by 240mm (12¼ by 9½ inches).

Le livre et la jaquette sont presque comme neufs, avec juste une petite manipulation. Aucune marque ou usure significative. Peut-être est-ce le fruit de notre imagination, mais la jaquette et les planches assorties semblent avoir un ton beaucoup plus sombre et doré que l'édition américaine. Bien que l'introduction et les autres textes soient en français, cela n'a guère d'importance, car ce livre est entièrement consacré à la photographie. Paris: Societé Littéraire de France, 1916. A very nice copy of this numbered edition of poems of Flanders and Brabant with Dufy's illustrations. It was published to celebrate the victory at the Somme. Pale grey original paper covers. Clean and tidy if a little darkened. Reinforced to the head and tail of the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout with a touch of darkening only. A nice copy. 230 pages. 165 by 130mm (6½ by 5 inches).
