London: Griffith & Farran, 1865. Fourth edition (published in the first year as the First Edition) of this scarce work debunking Spiritualism and those who claimed to see ghosts. Through the use of 16 illustrations (13 hand coloured) the author shows how the illusion of seeing a ghost can be created. The "List of Plates" identifies what colour illusion a plate will create. "Plate II. this black figure will give a white spectre." etc. Blue boards with text (in ten different fonts !!) and a spectral figure looking particularly Scrooge Like floating across the front board. The rear board has adverts for Griffith and Farran books recently published. Red cloth spine. A touch of darkening and some rubbing (with two areas of loss to the rear panel). A couple of creases and edgewear to the boards. Title page has a small closed tear (repaired with archival tape). The rest of the book is clean, with a little handling to the pages. A small An attractive copy of a scarce work. 11, XVI. pp. 250 by 200mm (9¾ by 7¾ inches).

London: Collins, 1936. A decent copy of this first edition. Green cloth boards, with some fading and a little staining to the covers. Faded spine and slight bumping. A little foxing throughout, but the plates, on shiny art paper are in good condition. 6 colour plates and 6 monochrome illustrations. By sport, Edwards mainly means horse riding and hunting. Owner's inscription to the front end paper, for Darjeeling in August 1943 - in the midst of war! 98 pages. 320 by 255mm (12½ by 10 inches).

Worms: NSDAP, 1932. First edition. A small advertising ticket / flyer for a speech by Adolf Hitler held in the football stadium at Worms on Saturday 12 June 1932. This small ticket is based upon a larger poster by R. Sch, printed by gebruder Hoffman of Worms. This is printed on heavy recycled paper stock. Clearly printed, and cut with a serrated edge (or perhaps torn from a larger perforated sheet?). 70 by 100mm (2¾ by 4 inches). Very good, clean condition with no significant marks. A tiny hole just in from the right edge (perhaps a printing flaw?) A rare piece of ephemera, we can find no other copies for sale. Hitler spoke before 30,000 people on this, his only visit to Worms. The football stadium was originaly called the "Wormatia Stadium" but was henceforth (after 1933) proudly called the "Adolf Hitler Stadium" (or later the "Kampfbahn").

Titles and volume number to labels on the spine. There is a little rubbing to the corners / edges of the three volumes. A little foxing to the pages, but overall in very nice condition. Very slight weakening to the front hinge of vol. 1. Originally published in 1839, this edition was edited by H.S. & A.B.I.P. and edited by Morier. It was published in the UK in the year of Madame Von Paalzow's death. Morier was a diplomat, traveller and novelist, who was the author of 'The adventures of Haji Baba of Ispahan' 190 by 120mm (7½ by 4¾ inches). 3 volumes - 1ère édition Ainsi (édition anglaise). Reliure plein cuir de l'époque, avec détails dorés, et décoration au dos de chaque volume. Titres et tomaison aux étiquettes au dos. Il y a un petit frottement aux coins/bords des trois volumes. Quelques rousseurs sur les pages, mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Très léger affaiblissement à la charnière avant du vol. 1. Initialement publiée en 1839, cette édition a été éditée par H.S. & A.B.I.P. et édité par Morier. Il a été publié au Royaume-Uni l'année de la mort de Madame Von Paalzow. London: Sherwood, Neely & Jones, 1812. Engraved title page, and illustrated with a series of 12 fine portraits, all engraved by Edward Bocquet from Original Paintings. Single volume. Original marbled boards with leather spine. gilt titles. There is some rubbing to the boards, but the spine gilt is still bright. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Attractive plates. Contemporary owner's bookplate to the inside board and slightly later signature. Overall a very nice copy. Page de titre gravée, et illustrée d'une série de 12 beaux portraits, tous gravés par Edward Bocquet d'après Peintures Originales. Un seul tome. Plats marbrés d'origine avec dos cuir. titres dorés. Quelques frottements sur les plats, mais la dorure du dos est encore brillante. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé. Assiettes attrayantes. Ex-libris du propriétaire contemporain sur le plat intérieur et signature un peu plus tardive. Dans l'ensemble un très bel exemplaire.

Fascinating insight in to the flora, fauna, people and buildings of Tihāmah - the Red Sea coastal plain of the Arabian Peninsula from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Bab el Mandeb. Profusely illustrated. From the Gordon's own library. Dedication refers to the former British Ambassador to Yemen (and PDRY) Douglas Gordon. According to international protocol, ambassadors and ambassadors-at-large are officially styled and addressed as His/Her Excellency, and the title is often abbreviated as H.E. Both book and unclipped dust jacket in excellent condition. 148 pages. 310 x 220 mm (12¼ x 8¾ inches).

Devon County Club / R. Cullum, 1821. First Edition / First issue of this pamphlet. Printed by R. Cullum of Exeter. Sewn. No outside binding. Pages 1-16 are comprised of Jones' speech, and pages 17-24 are notes in favour of Emancipation.
The outside pages (title and rear page - there is no cover) are a little darkened and have some markings to them. A little edgewear to the pages, with slight creasing to the corners. Internally clean and tidy with intermittent foxing only. This copy bears the ownership signature of Captain La Roche. Probably Henry La Roche, of Halberton, Devon. Captain of the Royal Navy and J.P. He had served in various vessels during the wars with France from 1792, obtaining the rank of Commander in 1804 and Post Captain in 1806. He died in Devon in 1832. See Gentleman's Magazine. Fingal's Cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, Giant's Causeway located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland and Gibraltar, the 2 portraits engr. by A.J. Hulk of William Pitt (after William Owen) and Charles Fox (after K.A. Heckel), a folding plate "Combat de boxers à Odiham" and 14 folded tables. The information and tables show the concerns of the Commune in Paris - how much the monarchy costs England, the number of prisoners etc. Text is entirely in French.

Pale blue / grey paper covers; a little worn / darkened, and the paper has split to the spine (has had archival tape at some point). Title page is the first page, and this has the remnant of the cover edge, where it has been stuck. Otherwise clean and tidy throughout, with a little darkening and foxing. Full of charming biographies of French poets. For example, Bernis begins "What a shame for the people of France that this charming poet abandoned it so early." Includes a surprising number of biographies of women.

Jacques LABLÉE. Lawyer; man of letters and journalist; printer and bookseller. - Born in Beaugency (Loiret), he moved to Paris in 1780. A lawyer in Paris in 1789, he was appointed president of the Luxembourg section in 1790 and became editor of the "Journal des réclamations". Printed J.-L. Soulavie's "Suite des Mémoires du maréchal duc de Richelieu" at 7 rue (de) Condé in Paris, under the name "Imprimerie de la collection des Mémoires du règne de Louis XV". Launches in 1792 "Le Fanal parisien, a newspaper necessary to citizens who wish to enlighten themselves about their true interests...". Appointed before Sept. 1793 as general administrator of military supplies, he was imprisoned for six months under the Terror. Until 1810, he was public prosecutor for the Loiret region. Author of numerous literary, historical and political works, he notably wrote "Guillaume le Conquérant, ou la Descente en Angleterre, romance historique" in 1814. Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur on August 17, 1814. Wrote and published in 1823 "Relation de ce qui s'est passé au palais du Luxembourg, deux mois avant le départ de Monsieur". Died in Paris in March 1841 (Fron BnF).

La page de titre est la première page, et celle-ci porte le reste du bord de la couverture, où il a été collé. Sinon, l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec un peu de noircissement et de rousseur. Plein de biographies charmantes de poètes français. Par exemple, Bernis commence par "Quel dommage pour le peuple de France que ce charmant poète l'ait abandonné si tôt". Inclut un nombre surprenant de biographies de femmes.

This is number 15/100. Here volume one only. Pale blue papers soft cover with titles and Renoir vignette to the front cover. Blank spine. Slight handling and a few very small nicks / creases to the covers. This is a lovely bibliophile edition, on heavy laid paper. Still a good Catalogue Raisonne for Renoir's works, particularly as the majority of the original edition were destroyed. see the facsimile of Claude Renoir's hand written letter to the limitation page authorising Mazo to produce 100 copies).
