Samuel Wesley (1663-1735), Anglican clergyman and poet. Public outcry to the criticism of dissenting education in his 'Letter from a Country Divine' to his friend in London concerning the education of dissenters in their private academies (London, 1702) led Wesley to respond voraciously, firstly with this work, and then again in A Reply to Mr. Palmer's Vindication (1707).

London: 1813. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp

London: Luke Meredith at The King's Head, 1685. Full title reads: "A loyal tear dropt on the vault of the high and mighty Prince Charles II. Of glorious and happy memory. By Henry Anderson, M.A. vicar of Kingsumborne in Hampshire."
The original funeral oration for Charles II. Now bound in faux leather boards with gilt titles to the front board. End papers from time of binding. Bound in to the rear are two additional leaves, printed in Circa 1816 and each offering a hymn composed by Joseph Wiggins. He was a member of Stretton Friendly Society (Quakers). The faux leather cover is clean and bright. The text is mainly clean, with a touch of marking / foxing to it. small number 19 to title suggests that this has been abstracted from a larger collection at some point. [6], 26, [4] p. ; 4⁰. A quite reasonable copy. The brown cloth has marking to the corner of the front board, and there is some light fading from water spots to the rear board. The spine has darkened so that the title is illegible (no gilt, if ever any, remains). Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a touch of darkening to the pages only. Samuel, Garratt 1817-1907 was also the author of "Signs of the Times" and "World Without End" amongst other works. He was an Evangelist within the Church of England. These sermons were given at the end of his tenure at Trinity Church in Lincoln's Inn Fields, before his departure for Ipswich. X, [1]-212, [ii]. pp

London: Tho. Newcomb for Henry Brome: 1678. Disbound sermon. Paper covers. Title, with black funereal border. There is a touch of nicking to the corners of the paper cover. The cover is darkened - the rest of the sermon is clean and tidy. A sound copy. Anti Catholic sermon preached at the funeral of Lloyd's parishioner, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, the justice of the peace to whom Titus Oates made his first depositions concerning the Popish Plot. Shortly thereafter, he was found mysteriously murdered in a ditch on Primrose Hill. This led to the arrests of several Catholics - and was the beginning of the hysteria of the Popish Plot. It would appear, in hindsight, that Oates himself was involved in the murder, and that its aim was to bolster support for his anti-Catholic allegations. 42pp - Wing L2700

London: L. B. Seeley and Son, 1825. Original diced Russian calf with gilt decoration to spine. Bookplate to the inside board. Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. There is an engraved vignette to the title page. After the treatise on Prayer, there is around 70 pages with examples of prayers for the faithful to use, and an index.

Edward Bickersteth (1786-1850) was an evangelical Church of England clergyman. He was active in promoting the Evangelical Alliance and was strongly opposed to the Tractarian movement. His son became the Bishop of Exeter.

There is rubbing to the edges of the boards, with a little bumping to the corners. The gilt to the spine has been rubbed and the titles are no longer legible. It appears that the book may have been repaired in the distant past (unsure) the end papers look a little newer. The binding is strong and secure. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a little darkening. Overall a sound copy.

London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard: 1688. pamphlet, disbound. Title, text, adverts (for Chiswell). "A Clear Proof" although written as through from a Protestant, was in fact a Catholic work, trying to disprove the certainty of Protestantism. This work is a rebuttal of that work. Apart from a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together. John Williams (C1633–1709), was a Church of England minister, and later Bishop of Chichester (not to be confused with the Jesuit priest of the same period). He was very anti-Catholic and wrote a large number of pamphlets attacking Rome. He argued that the Popish plot was genuine, and was firmly opposed to the accession of James. Geneva / Geneve: N/A, 1820. Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4¼ by 3¼ inches).

Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist.

Half leather binding with gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Marbled boards. A touch of bumping / handling only. Marbled end papers. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a little marking / darkening to the pages. French and Latin facing pages help with the translation / reading of the text. Originally published in 1827, this was abridged from a longer Latin primer by Lhomond. Overall an attractive copy of this reprint. Charles François Lhomond (1727–1794) was a French priest, grammarian, and educator who was a native of Chaulnes, Somme. [iv], 182. pp. 140 by 90mm (5½ by 3½ inches).

These volumes came from the St Birgittae de Sion (Bridgettine) monastery at Chudleigh in Devon. They were donated to the Abbey (and each has an inscription stating this) by the Rev. Benedict Williamson. Wiliamson was a prominent Catholic Architect, and supporter of the Bridgetinnes. He was ordained a priest in 1909 and was behind many of the finest early 20th Century Catholic Churches.

*Acta Apostolicae Sedis (Latin for "Acts of the Apostolic See"), often cited as AAS, is the official gazette of the Holy See, appearing about twelve times a year. It was established by Pope Pius X on 29 September 1908 with the decree Promulgandi Pontificias Constitutiones, and publication began in January 1909. It contains all the principal decrees, encyclical letters, decisions of Roman congregations, and notices of ecclesiastical appointments. The laws contained in it are to be considered promulgated when published, and effective three months from date of issue, unless a shorter or longer time is specified in the law

All edges gilt. Text in French. Includes space for notes / souvenirs, and a calendar. [2], 45, [45] pp. 125 x 80 mm (5 x 3¼ inches). Boards soft at corners, small ink mark to front board, and discolouration under gilt decorated borders. Upper joint split, and inside is slightly foxed; and hinges have been repaired at some point. Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité or Madame de Genlis (25 January 1746 – 31 December 1830) was a French writer of the late 18th and early 19th century, best known for her novels and theories on children's education. her devotion to religion, morality, and feminine submission, strangely contrasts with her own life and her art. Très rare. Première édition, dans de jolies planches contemporaines turquoises avec des décorations dorées. Avec une page de titre gravée et des portraits de saints gravés. London: R. W. for Henry Mortlock: 1673. Contemporary full leather, strengthened at some point. Recent burgundy label with gilt titles. The book has no end papers, and begins with the imprimatur pasted down to the front board. The final page is pasted to the rear board. The work begins with the title page. The book is in three parts. There is a lengthy "General preface", followed by the Contents, and "An examination of the pamphlet entituled Dr. Stillingfleet against Dr Stilllingfleet". The third part is "An answer to the book entitled, Dr Stillingfleet's Principles Considered". [LXXXVI], 1-12, 13-73,[i], 75-291. pp

The original boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but still holding well. The spine has been strengthened and although the leather appears cracked, it is holding well. The label is bright. Inside, the binding is quite cracked to the front hinge, but still secure. A contemporary hand has practiced it's writing of "imprimatur" to the inside board. The rest of the book is in good clean condition, with only moderate darkening. A tiny amount of edge wear to the title page, but nothing significant.

This work was the culmination of an attack on Catholicism which began with the Discourse in 1671. Edward Meredith and the recusant Catholic Thomas Godden replied on the Catholic side, and here he continues his attack. His attack is wide ranging, from objecting to the Pope's decrees and the Council of Trent, through to accusing Ignatius Loyola of fanaticism. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) was an Anglican theologian from Cranborne in Dorset. He was known as "The beauty of Holiness" for his good looks. He preached at St Margaret's, Westminster, on the day after the Great Fire in 1666. He was a leader amongst the "Latitudinarians" a group of young Anglicans, named pejoratively as "men of latitude" for the ease in which they switched side from the Parliamentary to the Royalist position after the Restoration. He was predominantly low church, and wanted reconciliation with Presbyterians - but certainly not with Catholics. Later he became the Bishop of Worcester (1689)

Boston: Apollo Press Joseph Belknap, 1795. A very nice copy of this scarce first edition. Recently rebound in half calf, with black marbled boards. Author's name and date in gilt to the spine. Binding is spotless. Internally complete, with some darkening to the initial pages. The page edges are rather chipped - but not affecting text. 43 pages. 250 by 160mm (9¾ by 6¼ inches).

John Clarke (1755–1798) was a minister of the First Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he was educated at the Boston Public Latin School and Harvard University He joined the ministry of Boston's First Church in January 1778, and remained there until his death at age 42. He was a charter member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1780. & was associated with the Boston Library Society; the Humane Society of Massachusetts; and the Massachusetts Historical Society.
Joseph Belknap was a Boston publisher. He was the son of a noted Congregationalist minister Jeremy Belknap, and a member of his "long lane" church in Boston. Here he had been involved with the ratifying of the Confederating Constitution of America. He involved in the foundation of, and printer to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1791

London: Ezerel Tonge, 1678. A disbound tract / pamphlet. no covers. Advertisement for further works published by Tonge. Title and 22 pages. A Protestant pamphlet denouncing the Romish Church for their "Rebellious Doctrines". Tonge claimed in the adverts that he was to have been killed following the Popish plot for publishing anti-Catholic books. The first leaf [adverts] is partially detached and has some grubby marks on the blank side. The title has an ink annotation (showing Morton's authorship). The text is loosely bound together, has some foxing, and has been cropped with a slight loss to some of the running titles. Ezerel (Israel) Tonge was one of the informants of the Popish plot. He was a Church of England Divine, and virulent anti-Catholic, who met and was influenced by Titus Oates. He arranged with Oates to "discover" his original narrative. Although he had a reputation for madness, and was sidelined as a witness early on in the history of the Popish plot, [iv], 1-22 pp.e was seemingly (if naively) honest in his belief in Oates lies.
