The binding is in a good, strong condition. To the front end paper, is a large ink ownership inscription. This shows the owner was one Fanny Crozier. She was of Westhill, in the Isle of Wight, and married to a prominent Justice of the Peace in the county. The books contains a frontis engraving and 39 beautiful engravings. Complete. Text in French. A number of poems. Curiously, the final poem is in English - The Hermit by Oliver Goldsmith. 215 pages. 140 x 85 mm (5½ x 3¼ inches). Bel exemplaire de cette Première Edition. Milan: Franco Maria Ricci, 1979. First edition. Publisher's hardback covered in black silk, gilt titles, color illustration glued to the cover. Illustrated slipcase with title on spine. Both book and slipcase are clean and tidy with no significant flaws. Aloys Zötl was an Austrian painter. He was relatively unknown until his work was "re-discovered" by surrealist André Breton who was taken by the surrealist aesthetic he saw present in the images - as he writes: "Lacking any biographical details about the artist, one can only indulge one's fantasies in imagining the reasons which might have induced this workman from Upper Austria, a dyer by profession, to undertake so zealously between 1832 and 1887 the elaboration of the most sumptuous bestiary ever seen." Fulignio: Giovanni Tomassini Stamp. Vescovile, 1787. First Edition. This is the second volume only (of three) of Muzzarelli's major work on the use of Logic in Religion. There were a further two supplements issued in 1788. Original green publishers paper covers, with number to spine. (if this is a library number - there are no other library marks). NB. This book is entirely in Italian. The green paper is faded to the spine, and has a little nicking, with a couple of closed tears, and a little loss to the edge of the spine. The boards are still firm though. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little foxing / darkening to the pages only. Overall a nice copy of this uncommon first edition. Première édition. Il s'agit du deuxième volume seulement (sur trois) de l'ouvrage majeur de Muzzarelli sur l'utilisation de la logique dans la religion. Deux autres suppléments ont été publiés en 1788. Wien: K. K. Österreich Museums, 1871. Scarce First edition. In half leather hardback, with red mottled boards. Contains many fascinatingly detailed b/w illustrations. Text in German. Spine is sun faded and rubbed, with some splitting beginning to top front of spine. Otherwise boards show minimal handling. Internally the book does have some foxing, mainly to edges of the pages. Slight curl to both front free end paper and rear end paper. 271 pages. 265 x 185 mm (10½ x 7¼ inches). This book was issued on the day the new museum building was opened - November 4, 1871

New York: Pyramid Books, 1976. Three volumes in the "Illustrated Fiction" series published by Pyramid books. All are first editions Softback. Full colour adult graphic novels. Byron Preiss wrote Schlomo Raven Public Detective with art by Tom Sutton. "Smarter than Marlow! Shorter than Spade!" Schlomo is described as being in the footsteps of the Maltese Falcon. Byron Preiss also wrote Starfawn, with illustrations by Stephen Fabian. (An adventure in the Star Trek tradition with a fantastic multinational crew on the Starship Destiny). Red Tide was illustrated by Steranko and is an illustrated Chandler novel.
All three are in good clean condition, with just a touch of edgewear / handling. Vol 1 unpaginated but approximately 128 pages. Volume 2 is approximately 128 pages. Volume 3 is 128 numbered pages. 170 by 125mm (6¾ by 5 inches).

The spine has gone, and the front and rear boards are detached from the text block. The title page and first gather are also detached. The leather boards have been held onto the book by tape at some point, and the outlines of this can be seen to the boards. Moderate foxing throughout. Sold as a complete copy of the index, in need of a re-bind. 260 x 205 mm (10¼ x 8 inches). Ce tome d'index forme le tome 4 des ouvrages de Lucien publiés entre 1743 et 1746. Contemporary vellum with two brass and vellum clasps to close (one of the clasps is lacking). A quarter (2 cm) of the vellum to the spine is lost, with cracking to the spine edge. Some stains to boards. Ownership inscription on the front end paper and to the title page. Text is in Latin. Text block is clean and presentable. Some offsetting from the engraved plates. The plates appear to have been trimmed quite tightly but with minimal (if any) loss. This third edition seems to be a pocket edition, so that you are able to consult the torments at any time! The plates and typesetting seem to have been slightly re-worked from other (including later) editions by Leysserius. The dedication addresses the apostolic nuncio in Germany, bishop Pier Luigi Carafa (1581-1655), whose arms appear at foot of title. Eight torments are described, commented on and vividly illustrated with fine engravings, i.e. darkness, lamenting, hunger and thirst, stench, fire, excruciating remorse, ill company and desperation. The engraving related to lamenting shows an improbable music sheet with notes and lyrics ( Vae vae vae, ah ah ah ah, heu eheu aeternitas ) of the chant of sorrow sung by the damned.

Dünnh. II, 1399, 15.3 - "Immensely gruesome and drastic description of the torments of hell..." (Dünnhaupt on first edition in the same year). "Infernus" Together with "De Aeternitate" (1620) and "Caelum" (1635) were conceived as a trilogy. Jeremias Drexel S.J. (also known as Hieremias Drexelius or Drechsel) (1581–1638) was a Jesuit writer of devotional literature and a professor of the humanities and rhetoric. He served for 23 years as court preacher in Munich to Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria and his wife Elizabeth of Lorraine. He wrote numerous theological works.

Vélin de l'époque avec deux fermoirs en laiton et en vélin pour fermer (l'un des fermoirs est manquant). Un quart (2 cm) du vélin du dos est perdu, avec des craquelures sur le bord du dos. Quelques taches sur les planches. Inscription du propriétaire sur la première page de garde et sur la page de titre. Le texte est en latin. Le bloc de texte est propre et présentable. Quelques décalages dans les planches gravées. Les planches semblent avoir été rognées de manière assez serrée mais avec une perte minime (voire inexistante). Cette troisième édition semble être une édition de poche, afin que vous puissiez consulter les tourments à tout moment ! Les planches et la composition semblent avoir été légèrement retravaillées à partir d'autres éditions de Leysserius (y compris les plus tardives). La dédicace s'adresse au nonce apostolique en Allemagne, l'évêque Pier Luigi Carafa (1581-1655), dont les armes figurent en bas du titre. Huit tourments sont décrits, commentés et illustrés par de belles gravures : les ténèbres, les lamentations, la faim et la soif, la puanteur, le feu, les remords atroces, la mauvaise compagnie et le désespoir. La gravure relative aux lamentations montre une improbable partition avec notes et paroles ( Vae vae vae, ah ah ah ah, heu eheu aeternitas ) du chant de douleur entonné par les damnés.

NA, 1839. HOWARD, Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk (1791-1856). An original volume relating to inheritance provisions for his children, 1841. Sixteen pages, with the remainder of the volume unused. It is headed: "Information connected with the Norfolk Family Settlement at the 31st May 1839." It notes annuities to the Earl of Surrey £10,000, Countess of Surrey £1,000 and detailed provisions for other members of the Duke's family, includingthe Earl and Countess of Arundel & Surrey, and their younger children Lord Edward (Fitzalan) Howard, Lord Bernard Fitzalan Howard, Lady Mary Howard and Lady Adeliza Howard, born in the early 19th century. There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839
his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral
Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.

London: John Bale & Staples Limited, 1940. Very scarce. First Edition. Burgundy cloth covered hardback boards with gilt titles to front and spine. No date, but preface dated July 1940 and neat owner's name, and rank, to front dated June 1941. A guide to facial reconstruction, and treating war casualties, with surgery and dentistry. Includes graphic photos and illustrations of war related injuries. Boards in very good condition. Endpapers are age toned, but the rest of the book is clean and bright; including the glossy photo paper used for illustrations. xi, 199 pages - including index. 250 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches).

William Warwick James OBE was one of the foremost dental surgeons of his time; and a pioneer in maxillofacial surgery. Benjamin William Fickling CBE was a dentist and doctor who played a major part in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialised discipline. A seminal work by these two specialists.
