London: Religious Tract Society. First edition. No date to this publication, but COPAC suggests circa 1825. Hardback. Thin leather spine, with number 100 in gilt to the spine. (This copy from Santon Sunday School Library, presumably their numbering). Inside, it lacks front end paper. Overall clean and tidy. The boards have a touch of rubbing to the edges, but no marking. The inside front board has slight loss to the paper - presumably where labels have been removed., The front end paper has been removed. School library sticker to the inside front board, and recent owner's name. The rest of the book is clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening only. 144 pages.

The Reverend Fletcher was a contemporary of Wesley, and one of Methodism's first great theologians. He was a French Huguenot, (his actual name was Jean Guillaume de la Fléchère.) and came to England in 1740. He spent most of his career as curate of the Parish of Madeley. Although a key Methodist, he always remained loyal to the Church of England.

London: 1844. A large Lithograph of a banquet for Daniel O'Connell. Chalk lithograph by an unknown engraver and publisher. C1844, Although not stated on the image, this almost certainly represents the banquet given in honour of O'Connell at the Covent Garden theatre on March 13th 1844. This was reported on in the Illustrated London News of the time, which bore a much smaller illustration. An article in the Times recorded that the dinner was given "to show," as the announcements expressed it, "the admiration entertained by Englishmen for his constant and consistent advocacy of the rights and privileges of Irishmen, for more than 40 years." This was a fascinating time in Irish Politics. Following the massive rallies and gatherings in Ireland to obtain the repeal of repressive legislation, O'Connell was arrested and charged with "creating discontent and disaffection" among the Queen's subjects. The trial began in January 1844 and O'Connell was of course found guilty in February. Sentence was deferred, and O'Connell began the equivalent of a "grand progress" through England, and to Westminster, where he presented a bill to Parliament. In May (after this banquet) he was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. The Covent Garden theatre burnt down in the 1850's. Some pencil notes to the rear. A little marginal nicking to the corners and small closed tear. Single pin hole to the side. 280 by 410mm (11 by 16¼ inches).

London: Fourth Estate, 2007. First Edition. Uncommon second novel from author who went on to win the 2018 Booker prize with "Milkman". Clean and tidy dust wrapper, with just a touch of handling. Now protected in archival wrapper. Book itself is clean and tidy throughout with no significant marks or flaws. Burns was born in Belfast and lives in London. The blurb describes the book as: By turns chilling and wickedly funny. 298 pages. 225 x 140mm (8¾ x 5½ inches).

Volumes III and IV state 1811 so are First Edition. With text in French from original written in English, with contributors including Charlotte Turner Smith and the English Quaker Priscilla Bell Wakefield. Title pages engraved with vignettes. Boards are rubbed at edges. Both volumes lack the front end paper. Vol 1. also lacks the half title and the frontis engraving. So there are a total of 4 engraved title pages and three frontis engravings. Title page to Volume I has a small loss to the bottom. Binding to the first gather is loose but holding. Volume III has a neat previous owner's name to half title. Both books have some sporadic foxing. The last page of the fourth volume has a partial page loss. A few other closed tears to margins. London: William Heinemann, 1898. First Edition. Hardback. A decent, and slightly repaired copy of this set of lithographed illustrations by Nicholson. The binding has been restored with a cloth backstrip, and reinforced to the front and rear hinge inside as well. A little rubbing to the edges of the boards, with some slight chipping. Inside, the pages and plates are in very nice condition, with just a little of darkening to the text pages. 12 colour plates, title and a further 10 leaves of text, including a final leaf with a facsimile of a hand written poem by Henley. Adverts to rear. 340 by 290mm (13½ by 11½ inches). In this first edition, the bus driver only appears on the front board, not as a plate inside. Illustrations include the Guardsman, Hawker, Beef-Eater, Sandwich-Man, Coster, Lady, Bluecoat Boy, Policeman, Newsboy, Drum-Major, Flower Girl, Barmaid, each with the London location they are to be found in.

Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876. An attractive copy of what is "probably the masterpiece of Gustave Doré" (Adhémar). Three quarter burgundy leather. Gilt titles and decorations to the spine. In good, strong condition, but the leather is somewhat darkened. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. A touch of foxing to the initial pages. The rest of the work is in good condition but with sporadic foxing throughout. The first edition was published in London in 1872 under the title "London, a Pilgrimage." Illustrated with 174 woodcuts based on the drawings of Gustave Doré including 52 full-page compositions. 434 pages. 375 by 290mm (14¾ by 11½ inches).

1833: Chez Aubert. Lithograph by de Becquet, showing the King sitting at his desk reading a 'plan de Paris', while dogs under the desk sniff at his feet. This page appeared in La Caricature, morale, politique et littéraire - a satirical weekly that was distributed in Paris between 1830 and 1843. It was often critical of King Louis-Phillipe (he was typically depicted as a pear), so this was a more positive image! The print is on cloth like paper, aged, and has slight creases to page edges. 250 x 205 mm (9¾ x 8 inches).
