The pamphlet now appears disbound, as it has been removed from a collection - but is complete in itself. A touch of darkening to the covers, and a small stain to the bottom of pages 4/5 but otherwise in good clean condition. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item, Copac shows holdings only at BL, Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons (1812-1883) was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church, and argued against seceding from the church (whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches). He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work, and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb (in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders, a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources") as the probable author of this work.

Contemporary half leather with marbled paper boards. gilt ribbed spines with fleurons, title-pieces and volume numberRubbing to the boards and corners, but the spines are in good condition. Inside there is occasional foxing, mainly to the end papers. Second edition, actually a Dutch counterfeit (original ed.: Geneva, Cramer, 1770-1772) of this little-known work by Voltaire, later merged - not to say swallowed up - in the editions of his "Dictionnaire philosophique". A particular feature of this edition is that it includes "Notes" defending Jean-Jacques Rousseau where Voltaire most violently attacks him. An interesting compendium of Voltaire's ideas on history, art, literature and religion, in a wide variety of tones, from jokes to complex dissertations, shedding new light on subjects such as justice, humanity and tolerance... Paris: Olivier de Varennes, 1640. Contemporary vellum, titles written to the spine in ink. Owner's label to the inside board. (Josephi Xaupí, abbot of Jau, dated 1765). Title, introduction & contents, text. Originally published in English as "Enquiries touching the Diversity of Languages, and Religions through the cheife Parts of the World." in 1614, this copy is the first French edition. The vellum is a little darkened and marked, but without chips or tears. Owner's label is clean and bright. The title page has been reinforced to the open edge. The binding is very slightly shaken, but holding well. Fractional darkening only. A couple of tiny tears to the edges of the end papers, without loss. Overall a very nice copy. Brerewood, Edward (c.1565–1613), antiquary and mathematician. Brerewood was one of six graduates from Oxford and Cambridge who were recruited in 1596 as professors of the new Gresham College; his inaugural lecture as professor of astronomy was delivered at the end of 1597. Brerewood published nothing during his lifetime, bequeathing his large and valuable library and his manuscripts to his nephew Robert, who saw many of them into print. Xaupi, Joseph (1688-1778) from Peripignan. Was a French writer and Theologian. He was the Dean of the Theology department & Abbot of Jau. He wrote "Recherches historiques sur la noblesse des citoyens honors of de Perpignan et de Barcelone, connus sous le nom de citoyens nobles: pour servir de suite au Traité de la noblesse de La Roque" (Paris, 1763). [xx], 338 pp. Vélin de l'époque, titres écrits au dos à l'encre. Étiquette du propriétaire sur le panneau intérieur. (Josephi Xaupí, abbé de Jau, daté 1765). Titre, introduction & contenu, texte. La reliure est très légèrement secouée, mais tient bien. Assombrissement partiel seulement. Quelques infimes déchirures sur les bords des pages de garde, sans manque. From the Birmingham Medical Institute Library, with a library name to the spine, and small stamps to the plates. Complete. Frontis and three further lithograph plates. Overall a decent copy of this work. The binding has recently been professionally restored, so is now strong and tidy. Just a touch of marking to the buckram. Clean original yellow end papers. The work is complete and tidy, and has benefited from being re-cased. The title page has a little marking to it, and there is a touch of darkening throughout the work. Each of the plates and the title has a small library stamp to the edge. xii, [ii], 472. pp.

Owner's signature of Francis Vine. He was the vicar of Eastington, Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, member of Kent Archaeological society. and author of "Caesar in Kent: an Account of the Landing of Julius Caesar and His Battles With the Ancient Briton" Published in 1888. No doubt this work was an essential reference to him. The buckram is in good clean condition, but with a couple of small splits to the spine edges. Paper label darkened and a little chipped. Library label to the front pastedown. Intermittent small library stamps throughout. Owner's signature to the half title. Binding is a little shaken, but holding. Intermittent foxing.
