A Durenne was an Établissements métallurgiques (Iron works and foundry) purchased by Aubin Antoine Durenne (1822 - 1895) the foundry was renamed Société anonyme A Durenne on his death. In its heyday it produced much of the street furniture for Paris, including the lighting and entrances to metro stations, and a number of ironwork fountains. After the First World War, it produced many of the ironwork monuments and plaques to the fallen. It still exists today as Générale d'hydraulique et de Mécanique (GHM). 220 by 160mm (8¾ by 6¼ inches).

The same image is lodged with the National Portrait Gallery. Here it does not have Ruskin's name (but does have the photographer's details). This is catalogued as a carte-de-visite, and dated 1867. Presumably the photographer issued the photograph of Ruskin shortly afterwards. This is referenced NPG Ax39887. The Albumen Process was developed in 1847, and was the first commercially exploitable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative. It was the dominant form of photographic positive until the turn of the century.

Engraved coloured frontispiece and engrave title have been stuck together at some point. Likely when the book was taped. Pages are aged, and delicate but the book is complete. Book block a little loose. A scarce and charming item. Text in French. 72 pages. 185 x 115 mm (7¼ x 4½ inches).

72 pages. 185 x 115 mm.
